Gearbox Explains Why Next Borderlands Is Sticking To Old-Gen Consoles

Gearbox has decided to stick with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for it upcoming multiplayer shooter, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

For Gearbox cofounder and CEO Randy Pitchford , the decision was not that hard to make. In fact it all boils down to simple math: "Currently there is - between PS3 and Xbox 360 - over 150m installed units worldwide - probably 170m is more realistic," he explained.

"There are fewer Xbox Ones and PS4s than we sold copies of Borderlands 2."

Randy then reasoned that nearly all Xbox One and PS4 players already have an old-gen console but the opposite is not true. "If you try to imagine the set of Borderlands players who have already upgraded, that's not 100 percent," he argued. "But if you try to imagine the set of Xbox One or PS4 owners who do not have an Xbox 360 or a PS3, the difference there is so close to nil you can't make a business rationalization around that."

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is being developed by 2K Australia, the studio known for its helping hand in the BioShock franchise. The game is set for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 in fall 2014.

OH NOOOO

The only difference we would have noticed anyway is that the PS4 controller blows the Ps3 out of the water. I'd be happy with a direct port and no engine update. PS4 needs MOAR games and the PS3 controller just is uncomfortable.

I got a Ps4, tossed my 360

I got a Ps4, tossed my 360 and Ps3 in a closet. I get their thinking when it comes to who owns more systems, I've been a serious BL fan, got both of'em and all their DLC. Won't be buying this outdated money grab they call a 'pre-sequel', give me a BL 3.0 engine on new gen hardware or piss off. The BL2 engine was showing it's age when it came out, the old hardware is WWAAAAAAAAY out dated and the games built on that ancient shit are showing just how out dated the tech is. Move on or get left behind. I'll keep my eyes out for a TRUE Borderlands 2 sequel, because the minute they bother to make a new game with new tech I'm sure it'll be amazing, but you simply aren't going to be able to produce something which impresses me with the same old tech, it has technical limitations which limited the game in its entirety. You need a new engine with less limitations. You need an engine designed to run on 8 gigs (the current standard) of ram and not HALF A GIG (The last console generations memory limit) of RAM. Borderlands is about MORE, not LESS. So why are you choosing the hardware which forces you to do LESS?

Great excuse for not

Great excuse for not investing resources to get your company up to date and keeping a major franchise cutting edge. Also cute that just a month ago you f**kers said you had 'no plans on Borderlands 3' and yet here something kinda is. This recent generational transition has really tripped some developers up, like the folks making Dark Souls 2 and a few other titles. It's like they thought people would stick with the last gen forever.

I played the shit outta both

I played the shit outta both BL 1 and 2. I too hate the cartoon graphics but the game play/story were amazing and most importantly the game is very very entertaining. Makes up for the shit graphics. It was a nice change of pace to play with friends and not be going hard core, just sitting back, chatting and grinding for loot. but yeah the graphic are shit and I feel they sometimes help cover up the unfinished parts of the game. Sooo many places I get stuck looking for loot and have to die and respawn. Also I do not own a next gen system, but I will buy it for xbo 360. Kinda a waste to buy it for PC.

Why it would be a waste to

Why it would be a waste to buy it on a platform where it's cheaper with all DLCs included, while being able to replay it in the future without having to replug your old gen console in the living room? Oh and the disks insertion every time I forgot about this.. yeah PC suck.

First, EVEN if it is cheaper

First, EVEN if it is cheaper for PC, its only a few bucks, and a PC to play it is worth more then a 360. Second, it takes a shit load of time to re-download everything to "replay it later on". I had to download BF4 twice to get it to work, thats 40 gigs, it sucked balls not having the discs. Third your bitching about having to put a disc in the tray.... how lazy are you? Get off you fucking PC high horse and calm down, nothing wrong with playing a game on console especially a game like BL2 which isn't really setting the bar on graphics...
