Take Two CEO Hints At Possible Subscription Based GTA

During the BMO Capital Markets' conference last week in New York, Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed their plans for the future of Grand Theft Auto.

"The Holy Grail is taking a business, already a very large and successful business that's focused on packaged goods... and turning that into a subscription business or a semi subscription business where we have an ongoing relationship with consumers, giving them products that they want," he said. "Who's better positioned to do that than the company that has the top franchises?"

GTA certainly is a "top franchise" and its upcoming GTA IV downloadable content seems like an ideal candidate for testing a "semi subscription business" model. Does that mean that GTA 5 will be subscription based? Your guess is as good as ours.

Take Two CEO Hints At Possible Subscription Based GTA

Subscription fees are a great way of securing long term profits, but only if enough people play to cover the running costs, there have been some great successes but also some catastrophic failures. If the plan is to have some sort of massively multiplayer GTA then why not sell the in game billboards as advertising space, stream in a couple radio ads too while you're at it, it would lend a little authenticity to the title and I'm sure the player base would much rather have non-intrusive advertising in their game than monthly subscription fees.

at 2:7 20/11/2008f**k what drugs are you on? If thay made it a serial-code that came with the game and had to be the same one on the server then no-one would be-able to hack it. That would mean only the one person who got the game would be-able to play and if he game the code out it would not work.Just look at WOW no-ones cracked the server yet, I know people have setup there own server but thats not the same as playing millions of people on the WOW main server is it.

maybe i didn't make this clear to some of you dumbs**ts (*cough* anonymous at 18:21 *cough*), but i wasreferring to the single-player aspects of the game. multiplayer would involve setting up a private server like you have described. but it should have been clear with "we have hacked it before", since GTA hasn't been multiplayer before you stupid c**t.
