Although Sony, carefully, avoid giving out any information on the time frame built around PlayStation 3, they are extremely eager to pass on information on what their plans are for the new console. These plans often sound confusing and vague but some conclusion regarding the general direction towards which Sony are moving may be reached.
According to the latest information on the PS3, the idea is for the console to escape the restrictive confines of the traditional console box.
We're not thinking about hardware, said Kenichi Fukunaga, spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment, The ideal solution would be having an operating system installed in various home appliances that could run game programs, he said.
Expectations of a 2005 release date are a result of a common microchip project among SCE, Toshiba Corp, co-producer of the PlayStation 2's complex microprocessor, and International Business Machines Corp.
Estimated to last four-years and codenamed cell the project is due for completion in spring 2005 and aims to create a powerful processor for home electronics with ultra-fast Internet connections that could, for example, transmit high-resolution moving pictures.
It's possible PlayStation 3 would come out in 2005, since that's when Sony's cell project will yield something, said Kazuharu Miura, an analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research Ltd.
Japan's broadband infrastructure for high-speed Internet services is widely expected to be complete by 2005 and Sony should by then have a clear idea of what online games people want to play.
According to SCE the details of the integration of the cell processor into the PS3 game console, but the general idea is to use the chip in Internet servers and home electronics to divide computing tasks among networked machines.
In that way every PS3 will turn into a SuperComputer enabling it to handle everything from games to video recording to downloading data from the Internet.
We've started with boxes, making boxes do specific things, but if you have a chip this powerful you can add functions to any box. It's reverse thinking, said SCE's Fukunaga.
PlayStation 2, has sold more than 33 million machines since its launch in March 2000, and leads the console wars from a comfortable distance from its rivals, released last year, Xbox and GameCube.
This current console war is expected to continue into the future versions of the consoles. According to various sources, Microsoft is considering launching a new game machine in 2003 or 2004 that would cost about USD500 and be able to pause live TV and record programs onto a hard drive.
Brace yourselves and prepare for Console Wars Episode II.

PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
How confusing... I don't even understand what they're trying to say because it's so vague.I guess the PS3 is going to be an amorphous gelatin blob that you place a DVD in and hook a controller to. This blob expands in your living room to envelop and assimilate other appliances, like your DVD player, stereo, toaster, and popcorn popper.

lol Hawk. Sony's right when they said
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
The PS3 will sell because of it's name. We will see what this system can do when it's released...and i really don't think 'Sony is going down' lol. If any one console will succumb to the competion it will be the X-BOX......

As for the remark in this article about Microsoft releasing a new console in a couple years from now...i hope for Microsoft's sake this is not the case. People buy consoles so they don't have to upgrade anytime soon and play great games. However, it seems consoles are evolving into the P.C realm because technology is moving so fast. When a console is released, within 1 year it becomes obsolete in terms of power and technology. So to rectify this because you cannot upgrade a console, these companies will now abandon the '5 year console life' and release one every two or three years. If this is true and it seems it is with all this talk about x-box2 and PS3...you will see alot of consumers pissed off at spending 500 bucks every 2-3 years for a console. I for one would not buy a X-BOX2 or PS3 after buying the last generation console last year or so. And i can see alot of consumers following suit....Stick with a P.C. it's upgradable......

What they said about the new Microsoft game system in this article was also vague. They don't say it's a new Xbox, but it's a

These damn console companies except for Nintendo do not get it. History has shown that when a console tries to become more than a game machine(ColecoVision,INTELIVISION,Atari,Sega, and the list goes on...) Console owners just want a machine to play games, not to surf the internet, or to be the hub for your multimedia centre, or wash your dishes and shag your woman. History has not been favorable for these systems that tried to be a 'set-up boxtop' Consumers surf the internet with their P.C. Use their hi-fi system to play and watch DVD and VHS movies. And wash their freckin dishes with a kenmore....etc. Now you have Sony trying this crap. I know were their heading with high-speed internet. It will be in the realm of buying games online or some sh** like that and playing them on the new system. So this way they don't have to worry about piracy and such. Who knows. But a little advice to Microsoft and Sony....stay the fu** away from that idea of a all purpose console. The public does not give a rats-a** about this sort of thing.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
About this new XBOX, I think they are talking about including TV recording abilities built in. It will still play original XBOX games but pause and record tv and probably other video sources.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
No Name, unless this feature will not up the cost of the unit then it will be a plus for them. However, when features like this are added it always raises the price some-what. Console owners just want a system to play good games on. When will these corporate 'leaders' realize this? They should learn from past mistakes made by other console developers........

I agree fully with you DRDEATH !
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
for those of u who knows me well, i am an obsessed XBOX fan. lately, i've been trying to be fair to the other systems (apart from the PS2 which sucks anal) but the XBOX is still my fav. but i figured, if i am just a gamer, then who the f**k cares which side i'm on right? so, if Sony nails this down, and make me happy, i'll more than likely to join the ever growing legion of Sony dogs. But it is sounding more and more like a complex piece of hardware, rather than a traditional console, which is making me take a step back.As for DRDEATH's comment, i agree with what u said, but hey, if i only need to pay $500 every 3 years for a top of the range gaming rig, as opposed to the $1000+ per year for the PC, i'll stick with my XBOX 2 and 3s.also, i'm i the only one feeling that Sony is trying to become technological dictators, by linking game systems with electrical appliances? they could be on to something...

System add ons never do well. They never have. Even now. Look at sale figures. Its is the lowest aspect for consoles. The large part of console buyers are parents and in being so they do not want to find more money to 'add on' to a console they just bought. God's Hitman i agree with you that online gaming is the future, however it will take at least 1-2 years to develope on console systems as the majority of users only have narrow band connections. And the P.C has and always will be the true all purpose machine. They don't try to say otherwise, unlike their console counter-parts. Think about what you said God's Hitman. You would pay 500 bucks every 2-3 years for a new console without the guarantee that the new system will be backwards compatible. So the small fortune you spent on your games libary might not work with the new console you just bought. What a expensive gamble. It is totally up to the console company to make it compatible if it is fesible. As for the $1000 price tag to upgrade every year???? You're a intelligent individual, you know it does not require that amount of money to upgrade your system or that frequent, unless you want a high end system every year. If your that anal about upgrades then you can get a new video card every 2 years. Wow, the same cost for a new next gen console...400-500 bucks and still play all your past and current games guaranteed. Like i said consoles are giving up their one advantage they held over P.C'S....that you dont have to upgrade to a new system anytime soon. Now it seems the 5 year time line is becoming shorter.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
Yes and your correct with Sony, they are trying to become tech nazi's.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
And as for the Nintendo just making games of the 'same old story' They are just expanding on their exclusive titles. Something Bill Gates would sell his mother and his soul for. And same old games? The X-BOX games are of the P.C variety. I will always say this. The games are decent, however their not cutting edge. The only one i can think of is Halo that stands out. Foxes Adventures, and Internl Darkness, and the Zelda's to name a few will kick a** The X-BOX does not have this exclusive base. Will they get it? Time will tell. Sales are poor for the X-BOX because most people will play these type of games on their P.C. instead. And if the time line of less then 5 years(which it looks like) happens, then you will see more people heading back to the P.C.....

1) Hitman i have 2 disagree. PS2 is not shit, all consoles are kick ass. Check in my last post in the 3 way console war thread or somethin like dat. It may look outdated but dosnt mean it cant get the job done (and a bloody fine job). I just h8 PS2 fanboyz2)I like Sony the company. But monopolisation is not good (unless its Nintendo since they will gurantee quality titles evebn if they own the market) See the SNES!!!!3)Keep it simple Sony!4) Sony is following the same path as X Box and the Philips iCD (shudders in horror). Overpriced and full of stuff that the consumer dont need has ensured MS is making a huge $200 US loss on each console, and hence PS3 shouldnt include all this farkin shit that we dont need. Nintendo dosnt need 2 cut the price too much and ensure it sells cause its been in the game for 2 long. It knows that no1 wants an overpriced console. Sony should know that since they kept the PS1 and Ps2 fairly simple. But hey i aint a CEO of a transnational corporation so what does my opinion mean? A Lot since i am the consumer and am striving 2 be a CEO of a TNC!

Hey all check out disREDMOND, Wash., Sept. 5, 2002 – The world’s favorite plumber has returned with a bang! During its first 10 days of availability, Super Mario Sunshine for Nintendo GameCube is already a smash hit, selling through more than 350,000 games. This is a total not achieved by any competitor, including Xbox’s popular Halo or Playstation 2’s Grand Theft Auto 3 until a month or more on store shelves. The immediate popularity of Super Mario Sunshine, which chronicles the chubby plumber’s attempts to clean up a lush tropical island, is also creating a significant demand for its host system. During its first week, Nintendo’s retail partners cited jumps in Nintendo GameCube hardware sales averaging 50 percent, with some accounts reporting that system sales had more than doubled.“This launch is historic—promising to break longstanding records,” says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. “So far, sales rates for Super Mario Sunshine are running 36 percent ahead of even Super Mario 64 six years ago—and that game went on to sell more than 10 million units worldwide.”Super Mario Sunshine is already one of the 15 top selling console games for all of 2002, but will face stiff competition from other eagerly anticipated Nintendo GameCube titles through the remainder of 2002. While Mario’s record of more than $7 billion in worldwide game sales knows no limitations in demographic or national appeal, older Nintendo GameCube fans will have a particular feast of choices throughout the fall.

i'm not registering DRDEATH. if i buy a new console every 2-3 years, why would i need it to be backwards compatible? its not like i'm gonna throw my XBOX out when XBOX 2 comes out. and about the highest end system every year, aren't you always talking about the PC as if everyone has the highest specs? Doom 3 on the PC is better than the XBOX version graphics and shit wise. think about what ur saying. only the high end users would be able to experience the game at its peak, the XBOX "version" should be little different to the PC game, just that XBOX itself is not a 2.56G, 512ddram, etc. If u reckon that Doom 3 on the PC is so much better, than u better have the PC to back it up (every year).
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
and also, just buying a new video card every 2-3 years isn't enough, if a new console comes out every 2-3 years, it would be very likely that it will top the CPU/RAM etc mark that u already own, so to beat that, u need a new CPU and motherboard and the rest as well to then really beat the newest console.i keep hearing over and over again that XBOX has PC type of games only, nearly as much as i hear that the GC is a kiddie console. for god's sakes, look the XBOX games up. one of the main reasons why XBOX is not selling well is their historical background. Many (most) ppl don't trust MS, and most knows hardly anything about it, since it has no history unlike Nintendo or Sony. MS has to fight an up hill battle. Take these things into account. the XBOX has plenty of Non-PC type of games. The most striking that comes to my mind is Deathrow and Project Ego (by Peter Molyneux nothing like PC rpgs). i can pull out my magazines and list more names, but hey, u all hate seeing that don't you?and about Mario Sunshine, i would get it when it comes, but only because i feel i am obliged to, since i have a GC. platformers are behind my time now, and i only play them for a quick rest from the ever so annoying Turok Evolution.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
i personally don't believe that the XBOX is trying to be an all in one system. the only "extra" function is being able to play DVDs which is impossible to go without since it uses DVD format discs. i guess they could have gone out og their way to make sure the XBOX can't play DVDs but hey, they'd be out of their mind right? the HD and ethernet is purely to support games. online gaming is not what i would call an extra "not needed" function, and the HD presents developers with more possibilities. the PS3 is trying to bite off more than it could chew. the PS2 has all sorts of unneeded accessories like the f**king multi-tap.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
Welll ill b a tooth less grand pa and still be playin Mario (assuming by then i would still play Computer games) but the moral is at any age, if im still interested in gaming i will still play platform games cause it requires great skill and expertise. Yes i am a teen (well adult in a few months) and HELL do i like mindless violent games (hence y i like GTA3 and Op Flash as u can go around killing EVERYTHING , friend or foe alike) since i like that but i will always have a spot for the new platformer if it is decent enugh. Mario is nugh sed. All mario games have been AAA hits! (well most).I dont like the fact that consoles are being released so quickly now since it reduces the life of the product and hence i have 2 fork out some mre $$$.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
well it sounds more like ps3 is indeed try to be more of an entertainment system thanh just a games console. but thats already started with the ps2 and with xbox aswell. they both have dvd playback for starters.if the ps3 does appar 2005 its still the 5 year cycle for those talking about 2-3 year possible releases (i know thats mainly about xbox rumours but needed to be said).as for the "sony being tech nazis" crap...hmm you mean compared to microsoft windows and office etc etc etc ? get real. all big companies want to really be monopolies. at least with consoles (at the moment) that hasnt happened. pc is a whole different story.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
i dont c the point on MS making a new console while they cant even uphold their current market.people like me didnt just buy a console for a year then trough it aside.if MS made Xbox2 within 2 years of the release of xbox, it will face what sega have faced. i think they should just make a upgrade like a doc-station on laptops instead of a new console.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
God's Hitman, many people besides you take into account that they want a system that can play their exsisiting games. The majority of consumers for consoles as i said before are parents. And to them buying a new console every 2-3 years is out of the question. For younr adults or teenagers that might buy it themselves, do the have the resources to fork out 500 bucks every 2-3 years and a whole crop of new games to go with it? Moreover, many people do not want to have a collection of lets say 2 or 3 consoles in their living room or bedroom. This has always been a issue. As for running DOOM3 in high res, to upgrade your P.C you should have DOOM3 in mind and that should be suffient for at least 2 years, as most developers will liscence the DOOM3 engine like they did the Quake3 engine. Also it should take a good year until software developers take full advantage of directx9(i should know, i do graphic art work for various software houses such as CROTEAM and NOVALOGIC.)So once you upgrade your P.C to handle the demands of DOOM3, you will be able to run any game coming out in high res and full detail with no problems. I hope the X-BOX is not tryig to be a 'all in one system' as this will ensure its failure. Sony is foolish in their plans with the PS3.(if they go through with it) pOO your right about consoles being released to soon now. If their not careful we could see something of the effect of 1983-84......
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
I would be out of my mind to buy a game console that costs 500 bucks.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
Playstation 3 should have a shape like the 1st one but a sky blue color. But i really like the PS2 a loooottttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
Playstation is the best but i would buy a $500,000,000 game
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
That is what it costs when a next generation console is released. If you wait it will drop in price. With the X-BOX,it dropped in price before a year into its life!
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
Strador, some of the folk here speak in Australian dollars. Most game systems in America debut at $250 to $300. They also could be including the price to get a game, extra controller and a memory card, things you might need to really get started with a console.

yeah, its true that if consoles come every 2-3 years these days (or years) it would turn most console gamers off. but two things, firstly, this will ensure a more up to date system, if u prefer that over some other factors, and also, as far as i know (which should be pretty far since i subscribe to nearly every games magazine there is on this planet, and other sources of information) MS has not released any stable info on its plans for a new console. MG is just BS. remember when they had that news about how XBOX 2 is due in this september? lame...And DRDEATH, i may not do "graphic art work for various software houses such as CROTEAM and NOVALOGIC", but i'm sure that by the rate of the advance of technology will ensure that if ur future PC can run Doom 3 at its peak when it comes out, it will not be able to do the same in two years time. it is very naieve of u to think that no other companies will develope a better engine shortely after the release of Doom 3.and didn't i point out b4, the PS2 and XBOX only had the DVD playback b/c of their game format. they didn't go out their way to make the console a DVD player as well.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
i'm not saying i hate platformers, just that they're like a waste of time to me now, since i have very little time to play games, and sitting there playing a platformer doesn't seem satisfying enough. its still good, and i'm not saying that its behind my time b/c i'm too old for it, just that i no longer had the amount of time i used to have. its good to see that the new platformers has various special abilities like how Mario Sunshine has a hose or something to do what Shigeru wants, and Blinx can warp time. But i still rather jump around on different rooftops in Max Payne rather than on different platforms in Mario.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
God's Hitman, all i am saying is that once you upgrade your P.C to run DOOM3 at optimal levels you should be ok for sometime before a serious upgrade again. Most console buyers would be pissed if every 2-3 years a new console came out. I would for one. I just picked up the Game-Cube and would be livid if they said in 2 years the Game-Cube2 was coming out. Other companies will develope more advanced engines then the DOOM3 engine however, i figure that DOOM3 will be the basis for all developers to follow for now. Especially once they utilize directx9 fully.....
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
What these companies have to understand is that when they put out machines that debut at 300-500 dollars they are losing sh**loads of money from the little guys. I bought the sega genesis, then the 64, then the dreamcast (worst mistake i ever made). I am passing on the PS2 and XBOX and sticking to my bad-a** computer. I am 16 and do not nor will not have enough money, even with a job at mickey d's, to pay for a 3-500 dollar console...they need to stick with the hardware of a console...not a wonder machine. I spend 150-200 every 2 years to upgrade to a new video card...then to a new PC...it is insane to buy a 300 (when ps2 opened) dollar system...and another 300 dollars over the next few months buying games. 600 dollars that is only useful for 2 years. I spend 1000 for a computer (that ACTUALLY DOES OTHER THINGS...AND DOES THEM WELL) every 3-4 years. Someday I believe they will abandon the console and move 100% to a computer. The computer is much more practical than having a computer and a console (that basically do the same thing).
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
for the purpose of this debate, lets not include the other crap that the PC can do.I agree that the PC is cool and as soon as the proper 64-bit chips arrive, i'm gonna get myself a new PC, but if u think that spending 3-500 dollars (aus) every 2-3 years is a lot on a console, then the PC is not ur budget system. the hardware evolve too fast, and software for them move along nearly as fast. Doom 3 needs at least a G3 to run good, and was said by the developers that for it to run at its peak, u need a G5 or something. and the graphics cards is not the only thing, u need a new motherboard to take care of the really new chips (like the 64 bit ones) and a CPU and more RAM (although thats cheap). and if ur really rich, u need to throw in a new sound card. now in AUS, a dream system (the best of the best) costs up to and more than $10000! and new console will never be this good, but at least its not $10000. i don't know, but i think that consoles are always cheaper and better than a PC running at the same specs.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
only that consoles never strife to be better than PCs hardware wise because:1. They can't upgrade2. that would too expensive for the common household, thus making consoles always cheaper than PCs.
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
The ever evolving costs of video games and it's hardware. 64 bit chips will be out in the first half if not before of 2003. God's get that new P.C! Consoles offer a different gaming element then the P.C, however, i believe as time passes those lines will be blurred. A.K.A. online play for consoles.......

Do any of you idiots even know what a 64 bit PC is? Or what it offers you?
PlayStation 3 to Have No Shape
I don't think if Microsoft were to release a new xbox so soon at $500 would be such a bad thing. If the xbox2 were to have certain elements integrated into it, such as the ability to pause/record live t.v., then it may very well be worth the money. Plus, with the extra features put in, it should be able to tap into a broader userbase. Sony's plan for the ps3 does sound ambitious, but also a tad risky.Oh and by the way, have you heard the news that Rare was purchased by Microsoft. While it hasn't been officially announced by either Rare or Microsoft, and I'm not 100% sure myself, what I've heard so far sounds credible.
