Intel 1.7GHz P4 ships at $352

Intel as expected released the Pentium 4 1.7 GHz processor on Monday. Most of the price cuts, across the Intel product range, announced earlier, will be implemented by next Sunday.

Information about the price of the new chip was confused, but proved to be accurate since the price introduced for the chip was $352.

The other price cuts expected from Intel are expected to bring the 1.5GHz P4 to $256 and the 1.4GHz t0 $193. Prices which until now got you a top end Pentium 3.
Until the new price cuts come into effect Intel will be selling the 1.7 GHz processor for $167 less than the 1.5 GHz model!!!

Considering that AMD's 1.3 GHz Athlon is priced at $256, this move is bound to produce a reaction from AMD and especially to the pricing of their upcoming processors.

According to researchers Intel has 77.1 per cent of the desktop processor market while AMD 21.1 per cent. One thing is certain, this competition between the two companies has brought Intel down from its high(price)horse and the only winner has been the consumer.

I have noticed that Intel is currently in a rather historical state. I remember when the 286 (or was it 386?) same out it had a new memory management system and a few other tricks. It (like the P4) was slower in the testing when it first came out. The fact was is that the memory management architecture was so different from its predecessors that it was actually ‘fumbling’ the execution and calculation of the code (kinda like the P4 now). This problem was only fixed about 2 to 4 years latter after its release that almost all of the compilers were working with the new memory architecture in mind.Personally I hope that Intel does not have to wait that long. Once its next chipset that will replace the current P4 core, hopefully compilers like MS Visual Studio will have the new memory management and other enhancements supported. From what I have seen if you use a third party compiler (for some reason Intel’s in house compiler sucks) you will see the 1.5 GHz processor act like a 1.5 GHz processor.I think it was about time that someone made a drastic change to their architecture. The current architecture was still 386 based (as with most compilers). This was hampering down the efficiency of the processors capabilities and just wasted memory. I wonder if AMD will have an equally future looking Architecture (using hyper transport or whatever they call their tech).Anyway this will help when I build a new computer in a few months (mmm, cheap CPUs).

AMD is way better then Pentium 4.A AMD 1.3Ghz is as fast as aP4 1.5Ghz and AMD is cheaper.I am just going to wait until AMD reacts and lowers their prices and then I will by a AMD 1.5 Ghz for almost no money and I will laugh with those stoped guys who just bought a P4 for 700$.Wahahahaha, but then I need a new motherboard to, goddamned. The longer you wait, the cheaper they are.Dread King--Yeah--[DeI]

ok now all the losers who think intel is faster thsn AMD need to be gassed, hung, drowned and shot. AMD IS FASTER AND CHEAPER!!!!!!!!!!!the AMD 1.1ghz is faster then 1.5ghz INTEL P4!!!!!! AMD IS SOO MUCH FASTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE

Big deal so what if intel bring down prices on their processors. AMD will simply bring theirs down again and sell more. Amd processors are faster and more effiecient than any of intels processors. You can get a 1GHZ AMD processor to be faster than an Intel 1.2GHZ Intel sucks and I wouldnt put one of thier processors in my computer if they gave me one for free.

OK SO THE P4 IS GOING TO BE CHEAP BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MOTHERBOARDS ???? THEY ARE NOT CHEAP WHEN U BUY A P4 U NEED A NEW MOTHERBOARD CASE AND A PSU COME ON THAT GOING TO BE $$$$$ DONT U THINK. AMD RULES I WOULD PAY A BIT MORE MONEY FOR A BETTER PROCESSOR AND THATS A AMD ATHLON

Intel 1.7GHz P4 ships at $352

WHY PAY MORE FOR SOMETHING THAT IS SLOWER, i know that the p4 chip is cheaper but with a p4 u have to buy a whole NEW SYSTEM that will come to a really highprice.Estimated cost of the new system:Motherboard: 300$P4 chip: 370$New Fan: 25$New Box:100$AND 128 mbs RdRam: 360$Add all that up

Intel 1.7GHz P4 ships at $352

The actual price of the P4 right now is about 700$. The 1.7GHz part has been released at a price point of $352 in OEM quantities, it would be wise to wait until Intel's price drops filter down into the reseller channel.Keep in mind that many of those retail processors no longer include RDRAM, leaving you to make your own memory purchase. On the other hand, the OEM processors do not hold as reassuring of a warranty, and may not include a heatsink, so choose your Pentium 4 carefully.

Pentium 1.7GHZ has a clock speed of 1.7GHZ and AMD 1.33GHZ has a clock speed of 1.33GHZ. The AMD cannot be faster. The pentium has the higher clock speeds, but the quality isn't as good as AMD. So decide what you want, quality over quantity. And think about the future Pentium 4 speeds that will come out.

Comeone guys do ya think that a majority of Game companies would write their software to perform better on Intel Processors such as the Pentium 4 or an AMD processor? I know which way I would go Pentiums Rock !!, and all the high end video cards such as the Geforce3 are going to support Intel Processors better than AMD's as well, Nvidia Loves INTEL which equals performance and reliability. You guys say that AMD outperforms the Pentium but what programs is that in? I mean do a benchmark in Unreal Tournament with both processors I will guarantee the Pentium 4 will come out ontop. And wait till the future when new games come out optimized for the Pentium 4... The memory in the Pentium 4 runs at 800mhz, the bus speed is faster as well, I don't think AMD can match this..

Intel 1.7GHz P4 ships at $352

Like I said earlier BIGDEAL if the Athalon shows up better in benchmarks I mean geezus you don't sit there running applications through benchmarks, what AMD arn't mentioning is software and how it will run in the future, you know why they arn't? Cos they know that a majority of software will be optimized for the Pentium 4.. Intel has close to 80percent of the market AMD is struggling to reach 20 percent, why would the software be written for a processor that has less than a quarter of the total market? All you AMD freaks that have jumped on the bandwagon should look at the facts instead of crapping on about raw benchmark speeds and worry about the every day running of the systems. As for price Intel have dropped their prices to compete so go and get one before the price goes back up !! LONG LIVE PENTIUMS !!
