AMD 1.5GHz or Intel 2 GHz?

AMD is working on the, planned, September release of the 1.5 GHz Athlon. Although this chip is claimed to be the fastest and most stable ever to be released by the company, the problems it will face are great. Most importantly the AMD processor will have to battle the much "heavier" 2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 chip, which will be released later this month.

The task AMD are faced with is to convince consumers that clock speed isn't everything. This is no small task considering that both AMD and Intel have fought fiercely over which company will produce the fastest processor first.
AMD are faced with a task similar to that which faced Apple when they fought to convince consumers that what their PowerPC chips lagged in speed, compared to Intel chips, they more than made up for in performance.

"Athlon is an extremely competitive processor, even at the lower frequency," said Kevin Krewell, senior analyst with MDR/Instat (formerly MicroDesign Resources).

The Athlon trails in clock speed, and "that's perceived to be slower, but it's not," Krewell said. "It's just a perception in that respect."
To date, AMD "hasn't done anything from a marketing point of view to help its case," Krewell said. He went on to suggest that advertising would help AMD deliver its performance message and also build its brand name among less-sophisticated PC buyers as the back-to-school and holiday buying seasons approach.

What is certain is that the Athlon chip won't necessarily be slower. The Athlon processor core handles more instructions per clock cycle than the Pentium 4. This allows the Athlon to keep up and in some cases better the Pentium 4 in performance, depending on the application and the hardware configuration.
The 1.5 GhZ Athlon will also carry a pre-fetch Level 2 cache, which anticipates data needed by the processor core and stores it ahead of time in high-speed "cache" memory. The chip will also sport the SSE multimedia instruction set, aimed at enhancing multimedia performance.

Although most companies try to convince us that the average consumer is some brain damaged moron who will obey most corporate wishes, there is still hope that this time consumer reaction will be to find out more, before buying any next-generation system.

ok, i get the point that amd is better, but can someone - instead of writing the same thing as everyone else - explain about instructions per cycle, is the 'mhz/ghz' how many cycles in whenever? and is the number of instructions per cycle the main difference between the amd duron and athlon for example?????hopefully someone explained this arleady so i dont have to wait for a responsei might have posted this 2 times sorry

I have connducted a few tests with the P4 and the AMD Atholon processors. I first did a restart on both computer containing the same hard drive, and the same amount of Ram. According to the results of the test the Pentium 4 1.4 GHz scored 84 and the AMD 1.0 scored 92. Then my next test was seeing which when turned on made it to Windows first. First the Pentium 1.4 GHz timed at 25 sec. and the AMD 1.0 GHz timed at 23 sec. The Pentium 4 processor costs about $165, when the AMD which clocked faster and booted faster cost only $101. Now you decide which is better paying more for a processor that is weaker or paying less for a processor which is stronger and faster. My opinion is go with the AMD processor which cost less and will save you money in the long run. Intel only wants your money to be wasted in junk so you will invest in more junk. Take my word for it.

It's a bit of a concern that people are reduced to hurling meaningless insults at whichever manufacturer they dislike. The only explanation I can think of is that people who have paid more for Intel processors when they could have paid less for something faster have to come up with some justification so they don't look stupid.If you were buying a bottle of Coke, would you choose a 2L bottle at $1.00 or a 1.15L bottle at $1.50?

Well, it seems that everyone here should tell his opinion...Mine is simple:Here in south-west of France, most people prefer buying AMD, and Intel PIII... The PIV is a lux. So, would you consider it: the difference between the power is not significative. You won't see any difference for what you have to do. So we should let rich people buy Intel PIV, and other ones buy AMD.I saw last month on TV that a few shop were selling CDs twice of their prices, only for rich people... why you say amd sucks. Intel was the better compagnie before but when amd release his athlon thunderbird it become the best processor ever. the p4 1,7ghz is 30 % slower than amd athlon 1,4ghz. hey it's 300 mhz difference and iT's still better. The p4 is crap. the rdram was bad choice. ddr was better and amd take it. p4 2ghz and amd 1,4ghz the athlon is still better and it's 5 time more expensive than the amd 1,4ghz. the 1,5ghz athlon will be 30% and up better than 2ghz p4. Hey i test all two cpu p4 1,4 and amd 1,4 and it's 70 % faster with the athlon. So megahertz doesn't count it's the cpu architecture.sorry for my bad english :-)

Ich glaube das der neue 1.5 GHZ Prozessor von AMD nicht so stabil wie der alte wird ich kenne nämlich keinen der mit dem vorigen AMD-Athlon Probleme hatte aber ich freue mich trotzdem darauf .Aufjedenfall eine bessere Alternative als der neue Intel .

I will buy AMD simply based on price. I feel that the speed and stanility are similar. It all depends on what test you run. For instance, if you use SSE2 opotimised tests, the P4 will win by a large margain, but if you don't the AMD will destroy. The real question is, what will the new software be optimised for? That is the questoin to ask if you want the best speed in your apps.

Yogi are you serious?? Because the Amd use ram with 2x200 Mhz and the Pentium4 use ram with 2x400 Mhz! The transfert are same (1400) but the frequence are BETTER FOR THE PENTIUM4! big picture is, amd does run faster and more stable than a p4, or even a p3 or p2 or p1 for that matter (which are supoosed to be the most stable processors) AMD makes them cheaper, faster, and they are becoming MUCH more compatiable with more software now that companies are figureing out that intel is slipping into the junkyard. Intel sed to make some damn good processors but they're slipping up now trying to make the clock frequency as high as possible. Hopefully the AMD and INTEL competition will keep going on, keeps the prices down for those of us with shtty jobs that pay nothing =)

DUDE,INTEL RULES AMD. LOOK AT THE CLOCK BUS SPEED OF THE INTEL AT 800MHZ AND THE AMD AT 400MHZ. I KNOW A LOT ABOUT COMPUTERS, AND JUDING FROM THE BUS SPEED, INTEL CAN DO MORE THINGS, THAN THE AMD. I HYPER-THREADING IN THE INTEL IS COOL. YOU CAN DO TWO THINGS AT ONCE. UNREAL TOURNAMENT RUNS BETTER WITH INTEL. PLUS, THE INTEL HAS DUAL DDR, WHICH CRAPPY DOES NOT HAVE YET, SINCE THEY ONLY HAS SINGLE DDR. LOSERS. ANYWAYS, I RECOMMEND BUYING A INTEL, IN THE LONG RUN IT IS GOING TO PAY, BECAUSE THE RELIABILITY, THE INTEL CAN GIVE.
