Intel PIII outperforms P4

The verdict is in: While Intel Corp.'s latest Pentium 4 offers superior multimedia performance, the Pentium III is still the best chip for business applications.

Analysts and hardware review sites gave their stamp of approval to the chip as a gaming microprocessor. But the 1.0-GHz Pentium III actually outperformed a 1.4-GHz Pentium 4 on common business applications, they found.

Furthermore, analysts said, few need a 1.4-GHz Pentium 4 -- or a 1.0-GHz Pentium III, for that matter -- to run a word processing program. Without a performance advantage, the Pentium 4 will likely be restricted to only the consumer market.

"It runs Office fast enough," said Dean McCarron, analyst with Mercury Research Corp., Scottsdale, Ariz. "And for a Quake head, yeah, [the Pentium 4] makes a lot of sense."

On a test system running id Software Inc.'s popular game, Quake 3, the 1.5-GHz Pentium 4 returned a frame rate of 168.7. A 1.0-GHz Pentium III, meanwhile, scored 121.4 fps -- a 39 percent improvement. Mercury tested the chip itself and posted the results on its consumer-oriented website.

Using the WinBench 2000 benchmark, which tracks performance under a business-class environment, the Pentium 4 chip only slightly edged the Pentium III using 3-D-oriented applications, Mercury found.

In 2-D applications, however, the older Pentium III outperformed the Pentium 4 by 28 percent, even though the newer Pentium 4 supposedly is a third faster on clock speed alone.

"For today's buyer, the Pentium 4 simply doesn't make sense," wrote Anand Lal Shimpi, a reviewer that runs the AnandTech website. "It's slower than the competition in just about every area; it's more expensive; it's using an interface that won't be the flagship interface in six to nine months; and it requires a considerable investment outside of the price of the CPU itself."

Shimpi and others pointed out that Pentium III is cheaper; a 1.0-GHz chip costs $465, after Intel's price cuts at the beginning of November. As previously reported, the Pentium 4 costs $819 and $644 for the 1.5-GHz and 1.4-GHz versions, respectively. OEMs must also buy more expensive Direct RDRAM memory, which at retail costs about $240 more than SDRAM for a 128-Mbyte module, analysts noted.

Still, the chip will appeal to some segments of the computing population.

Well people, I currently have to live with an AMD K6-2 500!!! Never mind your 1 Ghz chip! I am going to wait for about a year before I upgrade to 1Ghz. But even then I will probably turn to AMD for my needs! I wonder also -- Would anyone notice the difference in playing a game at 120fps instead of 70fps? I can't see how it would be noticiable after a certin high fps in the end...

Intel PIII outperforms P4

I have to agree with some peoples comments her. I would rather get an AMD prosessor that an intel one becaus their faster nad better, there is also a wide range of good AMD prosessors like Athlon,Duron, thunderbird ect....

Intel PIII outperforms P4

I think that all you 'Amd' fans are dumb asses. The Amd processors are crap and the Duron is extremely crap. I am currently running a PIII 600, i have tested a celeron 600, not bad at all for the price. Then i tried out a Duron...it is crap and extremely slow at loading and running many applications and games.

Intel PIII outperforms P4

Commander ding you are a bumb ass, i bet my soul that you tested quake 3 in your mom´s laptop and got like 40 fps and with your lame amd got 70+, but that´s cuase laptops are slower becuase the way they are built (and of course of the video card), besides who wnats to play on a 13 inh monitor when you can play on a 19+ monitor anyway

Intel PIII outperforms P4

i am sory, but commander you are an idiot.1) you are aware that when the laptop is unpluged there is a program imbeded in the CPU (or BIOS i dont remember) that slows down the CPU to take less power.2) Laptops have bad graphics cards and their number 1 factor in their low performance is that they are designed to operate at LOW POWER LEVELS. AKA less juice for the CPU and 3D processor. (just so you know that size is not the big factor)-----------one more thing... actualy two.first Intel's chips are much better at things like Voice Reg.Seccond one thing people keep forgeting is that it is a 64 Bit. personaly being a beta tester i will be needing a 64 bit CPU. Why? simmple soon there will be betas of 64 bit programs. They run much better on (some requier) a 64 bit CPU.and one more thing: Normal people should never buy a CPU once it is released. well the price duh. also the first chips they send off are not realy that good (though AMD tends to have many more problems in their first few runs).

Intel PIII outperforms P4

jazz you are an goat raping homosexual who cant get off intels jock for a long enough period of time to realize that a duron outperforms your p3 and that a 600mhz duron can be overclocked to over a ghz...you jackass

Intel PIII outperforms P4

illbot recomends waiting for a good ddr motherboard for the 1.5ghz amd palimino system... and to gonzo...the p4 isnt designed for 64bit server apps as far as i know... so its pretty much a shit chip until its hitting over 2 ghz..and by then amd will have the means to crush them with their hammer

Intel PIII outperforms P4

You guys are bigots. Everyone wants to think that their CPU is the most kick-ass piece of hardware available. Grow up. Why don't you all you AMD users do a screen dump of your 3DMark 2000 score and email it to me. Beginners!

Intel PIII outperforms P4

The duron beats the celeron. The Classic Athlon and TBird Chew up the P3And the p4, although worse than it should be, will also, yes- yet again, fail miserably to it's AMD counterpart.Later all you pissed off Intel-Bitch Fuk'z

Intel PIII outperforms P4

haha see what you people are doingthe cpu companys have you eating right out of there hands spending all yourmoney to upgrade by 50-100mhz or even 200 why? anything after 40fpsis just extra you can't see more then somthing like 32 so who cares and the price for these new processors is just WACKEDand as far as wich cpu is better who gives a S**t the more intel and amd fight the better off we will be amd probbly hanging in there for top speed and intel for reliability or maybe itwill change sides who cares just be happy we don't have to buy a new console and a new set of games to play every 2 years becuse PC gaming rocks with what ever processor you got!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Intel PIII outperforms P4

This is a terrible use of factual data. I'd like to point out Anand Shimpi's comment talking about "the competition"- The article says he is comparing it to the Pentium III but he IS ABSOLUTELY NOT!!He is comparing it to the AMD Athlon which costs significantly less than the Pentium III AND performs on the same or greater level than both the Pentium III and Pentium 4 on all tests except those involving software enhancements. These tests are limited to these applications:Quake 3MPEG encodingsynthetic benchmarksThat's all- most games, including Unreal, Vampire Masqurade, MDK2, etc are faster on the Athlon than on the Pentium 4.sheesh. I wish they would get their facts straight.Eric

Hi everybody! My name's Bassie and I just wanted to tell you guys that Almar Ruisch is a faget!!!!!!!!He saiz that Stigmata is a f**ked up movie. Can you believe that? It's the best movie ever shown on television. So, like I said, He's a faget!Bye!!!!!!

Hello all I would like to tell all the amd funs that ITEL will release 2ghz in June next year while Amd will only be about 1.4ghz in the Amd's production timeline. Intel will also introduce a new soket technology called soket 478 and that will provide more power and a Quad speed 133MHz (4*133) bus 2 times faster than Athlon. Also P4 will have the potential to increase the Mhz mark very quickly. Also the P4 is optimised with SSE2!! when most software comes out for sse2 (which should be about july next year) P4 will have a even great advantage over AMD.I think Intel did great, everyone will benifite from P4 even AMd buyers. This will led even greater price cuts : ). I think I will get a new computer soon : )

Intel PIII outperforms P4

Any one who says that processors dont matter is a f**king nut i recently upgraded from a celeron 450 to p3 733 (with an extra lashing of 1/3 gig ram Heh heh heh) and all i can say is DAMN i got a 3d mark 2000 score of 2380

Intel PIII outperforms P4

When it comes to 3d api's the p3 whups the athlons ass but if your working with avi's or wavs either will suffice as long as ya got shed loads o ram try goin a year an a half wi 32 megs @ 66mhz also the faster the ram the better go for a 133 bus or if youve got money to burn go for rdram although i agree about the graphics card but dont knock the voodoo 5500 for sheer eye candy dont bother with a super fly processor an 800 or 900 will last oh i dont know forever

Intel PIII outperforms P4

well dooo Commander Ding its a f**king lap top ya twat the amount of bottle necks you get on a lap top is unbelievable ram graphics cache hdd access speed refresh rate its unbelievable my p3733 would kick your athlon ass stupidly high frame rates r us

Intel PIII outperforms P4

AMD is kicking Intel's ass and they are less than half the price. Intel screwed up signing a contract on that Rambus crap. Intel may have started it, but they aren't running it anymore. Lower the prices and then they stand a chance.

Intel PIII outperforms P4

I am sick of everyones flaming of different opinions. I personally have first contact with most of this hardware being a builder. I stick with the intels. Remember the patches and fixes just trying to get the k6-2 to run games? I have nothing against anything that works, I was hoping the t-bird would be as good as said, but no. You have GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to cool the darned things....AND...the best board at the time of my personal testing..asus a7v...tells me that t-bird clocks only 100 bus! Hmmm. Some FSB AMD. So there. Oh. I don't know of any dual AMD config. I am running dual 733 with 12 gig 133 ram. Beat that Amd.

Intel PIII outperforms P4

AMD do rock!.I have a Athlon 700, my friend has a PIII 700, and we ran a set of benchmarks, to see which computer won!.Guess what, the Athlon beat on 35 of the 40 test. With a average of 27% faster!!!!!We have similar ram, and graphics card!!. So AMD's CPUs rock!

Intel PIII outperforms P4

If no one has heard there is many reasons why amd kicks ass.1. It can run a dual processor system(about a week ago)2. They have the fastest chip at 1.4 ghz3. If your a moron 100mhz bus performs the exact same as a 133mhz bus4. Amd's don't overheat easily and tests have proven it.5. Amd's are cheaper!!!!!!!!!!

Intel PIII outperforms P4

I love AMD better than Intel, but some of you AMD fanatics are putting out TOTALLY WRONG info.*cough*A_unknown_user*cough*1. Not out yet. you cant use that info.2. AMD does not have a 1.4ghz chip out. Where the hell did you think of that one?3. AMD does have a 100mhz system bus, BUT its DDR...so its really 200mhz. I think your the moron.4. AMD ARE HOTTER RUNNING THAN P3s! It IS proven.5. You are actually right for once. Geez. They are cheaper.I swear some people hehehe.

Intel PIII outperforms P4

AMD rules, but intel is not so bad toI have a AMD athlon 600my friend have intel p3 667his computer is better in windowsand my computer is better in gameZThe DDR athlon is the best cpup4 SUX against Athlon processors/The swe man HanZen

Intel PIII outperforms P4

AMD Sucks,I am running a Intel Vancouver Board with 128MB of RAM @ 800MHz front side bus and a PIII 600MHz @ 133MHz, NOT one AMD will ever come close to the speed my system runs at, and being in the multimedia industrie I can tell you that you can hardly run anything on an AMD without it either screwing it up or not running at all. AMD rules???

Intel PIII outperforms P4

Well Pentium III 733MHz performs better than AMD Athlon 700MHz in almost all game test bramp... so take your AMD 700MHz somewhere...I'm little bit dissapointed about Pentium 4 performance, but I wont hesitate to buy one when I get enough with money.AMD is not bad at all but Intel is only getting stronger and stronger when they ships their Pentium 4 with support of DDR Ram...

Intel PIII outperforms P4

Well if the p4 is slower than the already piss poor slow ass p3, Intel have some MAJOR PROBLEMS. AMD just keeps making better & faster processors than Intel does and will keep doing so. The p3 is totally a piece of SHIT and is soo slow and unreliabley piss poor it makes AMD look like the King of the world. Intel are just embaressing themselves by even bothering to make CPU'S they should just stop now before it gets any worse. AMD JUST RULE SOO MUCH IT ISN'T FUNNY!!!!!!!! NOTHING CAN EVEN COME CLOSE TO AMD'S PERFORMANCE!!INTEL SUX AMD RULS THATS THE BOTTON LINE

Intel PIII outperforms P4

Intel Such as more an more there CPU have MAJOR PROBLEMS and they what you to pay more cash for them ! but still there are people willing to pay this .for slower CPU ,more full them .and going hi there windows run beter on intel ,you put a 800mhz cpu in your computer you what to make it work and just do windows .So AMD Will get my vote all way on this note the price is good and there CPU work good on games and windowswilliam AKA demon_iii

Intel PIII outperforms P4

*unkown user*Ok. I must relent. I did find the link on AMD's site,but............That still does not rectify the other issues I have stated. Plus.....Because of your demeanor in your comments, I can not find any credibility in what you say, or what reference from which they materialize.
