Nintendo: Wii U Gamepad not a Tablet, it's more than that

ZombiU Gamepad

Nintendo has been speaking out about the gamepad for its soon-to-be-released Wii U console, stating quite clearly that it believes, despite the touch screen function, that it is far more than a tablet.

"The Wii U is not a tablet. It's a two-screen experience, and so you have this unique GamePad that gives you a different way to have a gaming experience," said Nintendo boss man, Reggie, Fils-Aime while speaking to the New York Times.

One of the examples that has been given with the zombie shooter ZombiU, was that when searching for items you'd need to look down at the gamepad, thereby taking your attention away from your surroundings - making for a tense experience. Fils-Aime continued to explain: "We've got a range of different examples that we can show you. It's everything from the three of us can be playing the game, and I'm using the GamePad to maybe try and attack you with a space ship."

"We've got an attraction called Metroid [Blast] where literally I'm playing against the two of you, using a space ship trying to shoot you, you're shooting up on the ground, so we're playing the same game but having a fundamentally different experience and that all happens with the GamePad. So it's a controller with this screen built in that allows us to create content that shows different ways to play together but have fundamentally different experiences."

However, the Gamepad does have tablet functions. Fils-Aime said you can browse the internet on it, watch videos, social network as well as being able to transition between gaming and these function: "All of this is done because my GamePad is seamlessly connected to my TV experience. That's not something you can do with a smartphone or a tablet - there's a lag. There's latency built in because the systems aren't talking to each other and they're not connected."

Deuce.

Sounds like a big fat stinky turd to me. I don't really get what mofo's talkin' 'bout everyone got a different experience, "look up look down look up look down here's my spaceship". Sounds like another Nintendo console gimmick to me. I'm surprised they're still in business, but since they are, I suppose they know what they're doing.

What i find funny is no one

What i find funny is no one has touched it held it in there hands or even used it. But you all no every thing there is about it how it work what it will play and wont play you even no more than nintendo. What a bunch of lame wankers. Grow the f up you bunch of children no all no nothing dickwads.

Its much less than a tablet.

Its much less than a tablet. Does the Wii U Gamepad has a multi-core processor, 1 GB RAM and a full fledged operating system? On a tablet you can browse the internet, watch videos and social network without being connected to any other device.

Somewhat, although a more

Somewhat, although a more accurate metaphor would be "they are saying if it walks like a duck, acts like a duck and sounds like a duck, its a mercedes" as nintendo seems to think their dumbed down tablet is actually more than a regular one that can do much more.

its not a tablet

its not a tablet, its a remote control whit a integrated screen that works in several ways, but the main two are. 1. As a secondary screen, for example, in Alien: Colonial marines, if the gamepad dont show the radar, i will be totally disappointing. 2. as a remote screen, allowing you to play games from the wii or virtual console on it whit out a television. the gamepad most likely wont have a fast CPU for any major application or game whit out the main console.

Sorry you lack tech knowledge

Sorry you lack tech knowledge. Its a tablet, remote controls cant render graphics, they cant send and receive data and they dont have CPUs or RAM. Remote controls are small, simple electronic circuits that light up an infrared emitter.

Come one, forget that i sayd

Come one, forget that i sayd "remote control". It still cant process stuff, its the main WiiU that does all the work. also, i have a radio controled helicoter that have a remote control, that have a screen, not simple, and dont use infrared. But its a remote control the same way. And i still have a remote control for my Master System, that have infrared, so, why are you discusing about the correct name to call it? Its not a tablet, like a android tablet or ipad, its a wifi controler that have a build in screen and a webcam, but its useless whit out the main console.

First on topic, the Wii U

First on topic, the Wii U controller does have a CPU, it may not be fast but its there and the one thing CPU's can do is 'process stuff', graphics processing is done in the console because the controllers dont have GPUs. Second: I find it funny that you first refer to your helicopter as radio controlled and then switch to remote control. Isn't it quite obvious that what you use to control it is a radio controller? Also some of the smaller (read $30 or less) helicopters are actually controlled via infrared (the lack of antennae is a dead giveaway). I dont really know about a master system remote control, I've never had one. Then you say its not a tablet, its a wifi controller, again I say you lack tech knowledge WiFi is one technology and not everything what works wirelessly uses that one. For example the wii u controller, it uses bluetooth for data, NFC for very short range data transfer (touching 2 controllers back to back) and infrared for accurate motion sensing (just like the wiimote, which is nothing like a remote control). In a nutshell, if a company were to build a tablet back in the 90's it would be the wii u controller with a lower res screen, being slow doesnt change what it is.

Also you should really wait a

Also you should really wait a few months after the wii u is released to claim that the controller is useless without the console. You never know what console hackers might be able to achieve with the hardware you seem to believe is useless on its own.
