Guinness: Black Ops Has The Best Videogame Ending Ever

Guinness World Records has compiled a list of the Top 50 Videogame Endings of All Time as voted for by 13,519 gamers.

"The list will cause heated debate among passionate gamers and provide further evidence of the growing sophistication and popularity of videogames," the Guinness organization said in the press release. In fact, most of the games listed don't have especially impactful endings and - to us - the list feels more like a list of favorite games.

Last year's best-selling videogame, Call of Duty: Black Ops, developed by Treyarch, tops the list.
The dramatic finale features a frantic shoot-out inside a submarine and provides the game's hero Mason the chance to take vengeance for a murdered friend. The closing sequence offers a new twist on the classic JFK conspiracy theory.

Second place in the list is 2010's Halo: Reach developed by Bungie. Another First-Person Shooter, Halo: Reach takes place in the year 2552, with humanity locked in a war with the alien Covenant. During the post credits sequence the player's character, Noble Six, makes a final stand against impossible odds. Although he is eventually overwhelmed, his sacrifice ensures that the 'Master Chief' survives.

Over 13 year's old, Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time takes third place in the list. One of the best loved games of all time ends in classic fashion with the hero Link defeating Ganondorf and rescuing Princess Zelda.

It is interesting to note that no classic adventure games such as Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, Broken Sword and Sam and Max made it to the list. There are also a few games that should be in the list but are not. Off the top our heads we can remember Beyond Good and Evil, Indigo Prophecy and Unreal 2 in addition to the original Fallout and the original Half-Life.

Personally, I would've

Personally, I would've included Dishonored, a Splinter Cell, Morrowind, and Half Life 2. I also wouldn't have based the list off of the most popular games, as chosen by a bunch of ten year olds.

I love the Uncharted series

I love the Uncharted series and think it is beautifully made, but there endings are always not quite as good as all the little twists you encounter while playing the game. On the other hand, inFamous and inFamous 2 have some of the absolutely best endings to any video game series I have ever seen.

wtf is this commercial

wtf is this commercial bullshit ? Deus Ex, Hitman Blood Money, Skyrim, Mass Effect You could fill list easily with better endings and u choose BO as no1 ? you're a ******* joke who acts like a gamer you're a FAKE!

well the problem is that

well the problem is that besides the poll group was way too small many people tend to favor only 2 or 3 kinds of games and stick to those even if those genres are full of the crappiest games ever : / i was born in the nintendo 64 period and even now i'm playing a crapload of games which i generally try to complete. I admit i have dislikes to certain genres ( sportsgames in my case) but i still play and own sega games even though they were from before my time. But there is 1 thing i find necessary for a person to do: play at least a game from every genre once. sure things may turn out such as yourself finding it a waste of time but you could compare this to taking a vacation to another country. stay in your country ( game, genre, console,..) and be oblivious of the world or go somewhere and see the sights and learn the differences ; ) anyways still would've liked zelda to score higher since i grew up with it but i certainly do see other games up here of which i feel they deserved it. only other too bad would be the fact that most of these games aren't that old while i feel some older 1s should've been here too. (loved the duke nukem 3d and and resident evil 1 ending when i was younger) anyways have fun debating.

So Guiness has played every game ever? How does not, say To the Moon's ending beat every game on here? Why is Sonic even on the list? It's basically a "you win" screen.

I think they meant the one for PS3/Xbox 360. I agree with them, it had a pretty good story and ending. Gameplay was oh so terreble though.

Mass Effect 3 ending

The reason it wasn't top of the list is because many gamers felt like it was not quite enough of a testament to the actions of the player. I personally played through the entire trilogy, got to the end of mass effect three and when presented with two choices, chose to destroy the reapers. The way this played out felt like the game had lied to me or tricked me as the Catalyst said that the reapers, the geth and any other form of synthetic life would be destroyed. He also stated that even you are partially synthetic which is made out to sound like he means shepard only, when in reality the crucible destroys all life within range of the crucible or any mass relay. I felt like this was a terrible way to farewell the character who I had spent at least 100 hours making my own. The devs evidently agreed as they released a patch that made the ending much more satisfying.

Bull Crap....How does Black Ops even compare to, Knights of the Old republic, Mass Effect, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear, or Assassin's Creed??....Who ever made this list was high. Not to **** on every COD fan but... come on, all COD games end the same (oh you mean theirs a nuke???) that's it. When a lot of games dedicated to story didn't even make top 10?....=(

This list is crap, its like

This list is crap, its like they put all the games the were well known to all and just threw them in random order. . . Really good endings like Splinter Cell: Conviction and Darksiders get left by the wayside just cause some might not know them, disappointing list.

Shadow of the colossus should have been in the top ten AT LEAST. Watch, guiness, as the gaming community showers you with hate for all the error in this list.

Gamer's that can't read will rage on this

Guinness clearly states, this just looks like a list of favorite games rather than games with best endings. They did a survey of over 13,000 gamers and these are simply the results. It is not their subjective opinion. It is 13,000 randomly polled gamers that don't understand the question and people that are going to comment against Guinness are gamers that can't read or comprehend.

Ah, no

Guinness stated "The list will cause heated debate among passionate gamers and provide further evidence of the growing sophistication and popularity of videogames,". It was the person writing the article that said it looks like a list of favourite games. But, as you implied, being that it was a random poll, Guinness is not to blame for the results.

Joke List

"In fact, most of the games listed don't have especially impactful endings and - to us - the list feels more like a list of favorite games." - No Sh*t. What a joke of a list. It must be designed purely to create controversy.

not realy a good list

wile the games on the list are good the endings of a lot of them are not, fallout 3 was a realy good game, but the ending is one of the worst I have ever seen, it's only redeeming quality is that with the expansion broken steel the game continues and wile not providing a real ending at least it gives a satisfying final battle, halo reach, sonic the hedgehog, super mario bros, san andreas are other games that fall in this category of great games with endings that are nothing special

Gaming just a phase

I like that 'heated debate among passionate gamers' showing 'growing popularity and sophistication' in the games. That's so funny. Of course, it makes absolutely no sense, but you knew that when you wrote this, didn't you? Other than that, its a good list. All these games will quickly be forgotten and this generation of gamers will suffer extreme nausea when they see next gen games in the future featuring even less substance, playability, challenge and satisfaction.

CoD was dead long ago

there is NO POINT to the cod / MW franchises anymore both the multiplayer and single player aspects suck but everyone does multiplayer becuase THEY CAN ACTUALLY MOVE THEIR CHARECTORS MORE THAN 12 INCHES, you get achievements for suvcking or getting killed, if i wanted bennefits like that i would be AFK'ing in the game already like a training dummy saying "shoot me" point is: there was only 2 good CoD franchises, big red one's campaighn, and finest hour. they get good reviews from full experience not just writing down who much someone buyed it or how famous it was, and when you limit polls to certain games they are gonna rip it out of the back of their heads and chose one that they wanted instead of the actuall choice (thats why guiness polls most expectedly SUCK by the way the call of duty and MW series are all downhill now, just let the call of duty franchise die with the fanboys (who compare every f * cking game they play to an FPS by the way) just... let... the series... DIE

Stupid list

I know this is all about personal opinion but I personally think that Snake eater had a great ending or at least a better ending than most of the other games that were supposedly better. It is one of my favoutite games of all time and the ending was a great way to finish the game. It really is just someones opinion but I still dont see how Black opps has the best ending as it was again in my opinion rubbish

Really? Black Ops had the

Really? Black Ops had the best ending ever? If I wrote a book, Black Ops would be one of many various endings I would like. The whole list was flawed. You know what the best game ending ever was? Nothing, there never was because an ending should be cannon to the storyline, play with faults, be engaging and inspired. If I had to choose one I would pick Mass Effect 3 (here come the fanboys). My reasoning is such. After all that time trying to stop the reapers, as soon as you fight one, the thing comes to mind is "Holy ****. I had to fight one of these things and there is trillions of these things heading this way." It was cannon to the story because after you defeat the reaper, it says the extinction of all organic life is necessary. Delving further into that, all synthetic life is programmed to wipe out humanity + all organic life. The reapers split off and made it so that organic life has a chance to survive. Their mission is to exterminate life and they have before, simply put life always finds a way. Since most organic life is killed off, synthetic life will dwindle till finally people realize, "Maybe we should stop giving these immortal, soulless, remorseless killing machines weapons or better yet stop making them." The whole ending is humanity is flawed beyond belief and what may seem horrible to us and extinction is really just the natural order of the universe in effect. The final reason it is the best ending is because of the mass outcry, the game developers are releasing a free DLC to placate fans. This is extremely important for the gaming industry so they finally understand that gamers know what they want and we will not put up with anything less than brilliance so go back to the drawing board and get it right or get out.

Honestly, these polls are just to get true gamers to argue their own opinions. If someone really wanted to get an idea of the best video game endings they would ask someone who had been playing video games for more than 20 years, not some kid who buys whatever his friends buy just to say he's the worlds greatest gamer because he happened to kill some dude with a throwing life from the other side of the map! I try not to give a reaction to these polls but it is just so frustrating that they continue to do it even after the previous one gets so much crap. Really, how much did activision and treyarch pay to have blops put at the top of the list just so another thousand dorky teenagers go buy their game. I have nothing against CoD but I HATE their die hard fans. If people want a GOOD shooter with a GOOD story, migt I reccommend Half Life.

This is hilarious

"It is interesting to note that no classic adventure games such as Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, Broken Sword and Sam and Max made it to the list."

Well thats because those that voted in this were ******* 12 and 13 year olds. Its all about popularity over quality with these sort of things. If you ask the same question 5 years from now, the results would be dramatically different.

"Guinness: Black Ops Has The Best Videogame Ending Ever" head lines like this makes very little wonder why Virginia Tech massacre happen. ulrtatrollface.jpg

the only time Call of Duty has a better ending then any other game is the day it ends with "And from here on we wont make anymore Call of Duty games"....
