Gabe Newell Confirms Steam Box – To Be Released Within A Year

Valve boss, Gabe Newell, finally confirmed that the company is working on the rumored “steam Box” console and that it will be released no later than next year.

The greatest challenge Valve faced while designing Steam Box was figuring out a way to make PCs usable in the living room. The company has since released its TV-friendly Big Picture mode, solving the usability issue.

Next, the company plans to get “Steam for Linux” out of beta and preinstall it on Steam Box consoles

The Steam Box should be out by next year and Newell expects other companies to release similar PC-based living room consoles around the same time. The Valve boss believes that those PC boxes will be able to compete favorably with next gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony. "I think in general that most customers and most developers are gonna find that [the PC is] a better environment for them," he said. "Cause they won't have to split the world into thinking about 'why are my friends in the living room, why are my video sources in the living room different from everyone else?' So in a sense we hopefully are gonna unify those environments."

Although Steam Box is essentially a PC in a box, it won’t be as open as PC users are used to. "Well certainly our hardware will be a very controlled environment," noted Gabe Newell. "If you want more flexibility, you can always buy a more general purpose PC. For people who want a more turnkey solution, that's what some people are really gonna want for their living room."

"The nice thing about a PC is a lot of different people can try out different solutions, and customers can find the ones that work best for them."

Oh Gabe.

Another console huh? Just what the world needs. More garbage. I have a PC hooked up to my TV. I use a wireless mouse & keyboard & Win XP. It does more than any shitbox from any company ever will. I love the guy for his dedication to the PC, but a console is a console is a console. If it looks like shit, acts like shit & feels like shit, then it's probably a console.

Lmfao. I hope these console

Lmfao. I hope these console fanboys are in their early 20s cause all I am reading is bullshit. PC gaming is far from dead. It is actually getting a revival if anything. I have an xbox/ps3 and while I do enjoy them, PC is still far superior. If you would ask people about steam 5-10 years ago, they would be like wtf is that? Now a lot more people know about it and have it, as do many of my friends. PC is making a come back:)

No

EA already tried to buy Steam and Valve refused the offer and laughed about it. There isn't a price Valve would consider to sell steam away for. It's their baby and they're not giving it up to a company like EA who would only destroy it.

Are you stupid or something,

Are you stupid or something, EA couldnt afford to buy out steam, steam is far to profitable for valve and they wouldnt let it go for all the money that EA could make in a year, and if this Steam Box takes off it will just make valve more and more money, has EA released a Console? no because they are an unambitious failing company who are grasping at and stealing other companies ideas to stay afloat, EA started Origin so they could try to compete with the Steam Monster and they might if they could aford it try for a console now that steam is doing it but unless they expand to cover games that dont belong to EA it will never be as successful. I feel sorry for poor kids like you that hate on things like Steam, GOG, MMOs, ect even though they are the reason that PC gaming isnt dead, the fact of the matter is that steam is one of the best things to happen to PC gaming.

Console are still better imo,

Console are still better imo, because they have better exclusives than what PC have. PC is just old school with nothing better in game exclusives other than f2p mmo's and FPS games, and great games that is suppose to be on console is just ported on PC to make some more lil' money (RE games, fighting games, Dark Souls, etc)

Out the Door

Gaming isnt how it used to be on the PC anymore, A lot of us old schoolers went console for many reasons, and with the next generation of consoles coming at the end of 2013 which be possibily be the final nail to wipe out most of the gamers who use PC's to do their gaming. Of course mobile gaming is getting really huge now, and it will eventually even surpass console gaming in a decade or so without a doubt.

Nope

You're right, PC gaming isn't like it used to be, it's better.. You wouldn't know that because you're a console gamer now. You've been programed into think Consoles are superior to PC which is laughable. And mobile gaming isn't going to take over no matter what people think. Sure, there will be a market for it, but consoles and pc gaming isn't going anywhere.

Games prices?

I'm assuming that the steam box will be games via download. In that case surely anyone who has one would get a bum deal. Games off steam (and most download shops) are usually alot more expensive than they are to buy on disc. So it seems like an expensive way to play games to me. I own a pc and a console and 9 times out of 10 i opt to buy the games on disc instead of direct download because the games can be anywhere from £2 to £25 cheaper.

Games cost the same thing on

Games cost the same thing on release, be it disk or download. Eventually disks go to the bargain bin and can be pretty cheap, however steam has a few sales events per year which no physical store can match, especially the christmas sale. So check steam around december 20th, the sale should be live by then, then post a more informed opinion.

If i were to guess I'd say

If i were to guess I'd say they plan to offer steam box with linux and another with windows, the latter would cost a bit more due to the windows license. There is no "some sort of advanced OpenGL API", it will be the normal OpenGL for linux, otherwise steam box wouldn't be able to run games unless they were made specifically for it (like a console).
