Sony Allows Unfinished Games On PlayStation 4

Thanks to the quality control enforced by platform owners such as Microsoft and Sony, console games are usually not released until they are complete and bug-free. This gives console gamers a simple plug-and-play experience at the cost of increased development time and cost. But now it seems that Sony is open to relaxing those constraints a bit.

According to SCEA VP of publishing Adam Boyes, the company is now open to having unfinished games released on PlayStation 4 as long as they don’t “have any bugs that are completely destroying the world.”

"[Dust 514] is a great example of putting out content that you know is not final," he explained. "If you want to monetize it, that's fine. I mean, if you want to put out a game that's playable and does pass the checklists and stuff, you can. If it doesn't sell and you can't support, you may not want to support, but we absolutely support that."

Boyes asserted that this policy applies to all Sony platforms including PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Mobile.

Of course a MMO game is going to be unfinished, but if they are going to let every single company released unfinished games than boy,,, I will never own a play station ever.

Look at sony trying to catch

Look at sony trying to catch a ride on steams band wagon. Steam started allowing developers to sell "early access" games in alpha and beta stages a month or so ago and now they announce they might do something similar. Although they're just copying steam this might bode well for consoles, last gen consoles were plagued by long, convoluted and expensive reviewing processes for devs to release patches and the like. If this means it'll be that much easier for them to do that then we might see shorter development times and maybe even mods in consoles, how fitting for the possibly last generation of consoles to catch up to PCs in such things. This might be fun...

can say look at Steam after

can say look at Steam after catching a ride on the gaming wagon by copying Microsoft who copied Sony who followed Sega and Nintendo and jump into the gaming market. And everyone making an tablet like ipad and mobile devices like iphone.

I don't play Dust514 much,

I don't play Dust514 much, RARELY and not for LONG if I do play. Seems like the game is already out. Come to think of it, the beta IS the game isn't it? I mean its been out for a long time and all they need to do is patch it and BOOM you have the game with the word beta on it lol. It is free to play after all and PSN only so not like you'd have to delete and go get physical copy. You can say its a free game that is available right now.

also

people forget, that even though PS4 is based on PC components, the games are built for that specific hardware and MOST importantly "optimized". Unlike PC games, which need to accommodate a huge variety of PC hardware, there are thousands more variables in PC gaming that could cause a bug

bugs can be squashed

you know, there are bugs in the current gen consoles... for example, I ran into multiple ones for L.A Noire for the 360. They patched it with time. I do not see how this is a big deal, then again, I am a mainly a PC gamer, and I guess it's something that I am conditioned to. I agree with the parts that the game needs to be playable. But if it drives down cost, I am fine if there are a few glitches here and there right at the release of the game, not like they have been releasing bug free games on the 360 or PS3.
