Microsoft Creative Director Defends Always-Online Consoles

Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth defended always-online consoles and said that players who don’t like being forced to be online to play single player games should “#deal-with-it.”

"Sorry, I don't get the drama around having an 'always online' console," he Tweeted. "Every device now is 'always on'. That's the world we live in. #dealwithit."

Orth didn’t mention Xbox 720 (Durango), but it is hard to keep it off mind when several reports claim that it won’t run any games or apps unless it is connected to the internet. In fact, the latest insider tip regarding that matter came about just a few hours ago when a Microsoft employee told Kotaku that “If there isn't a connection, no games or apps can be started. If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time--currently three minutes, if I remember correctly--the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started.”

Microsoft’s creative director didn’t back down when tweeps objected that internet is not reliably available everywhere in USA, let alone the world. "Why on earth would I live there?" he answered defiantly.

And when BioWare designer Manveer pointed out to the launch troubles of always-online games such as Diablo III and Sim City, Orth counter argued nonchalantly that "electricity goes out, too."

Orth protected his Twitter account following the backlash from his followers.

Wow LOL Haha!!

This guy sounds like he wants consoles dead as much as anyone who's not dumb, or he's hella hella dumb. In either case, my phone is not "always on", my PC is not "always on" & this is another to add to a long list of reasons why consoles suck & PCs are better. The PC on my TV, the PC on my desk & the PC in my pocket trump this video game specific garbage every single time & this gen' of consoles should be the last. PC's ain't goin' anywhere Micro$hit. If you wanna follow Apple & try to fuck it up with Win 8 then go ahead. Run yourself into the ground. You're long overdue for it. Someone else will gladly take your place & do it better when they get there.

the reality is that initially

the reality is that initially it will sell well because you'll always have your hardcore fans that will buy any crap that they spit out , but this guy never heard of him before this article but he sounds like some arrogant prick ,what about people who dont have internet or are unable to get it because of the location they live in , this is ridiculous got sick of microsoft a long time ago with there crazy xbox live prices but the only thing iam looking forward to about the 720 is when people hack the shit out of it and then free games for every1 and always online lol i give it a month before some1 has a fix for that , money hungry cunts

food for thought...

If you take a moment to think about it: Microsoft now want to sell a product to you that you will be unable to utilize without the support of your local ISP (internet service provider). A home console, if ANYONE reading this is old enough to remember, was all about one place, one solution, that was it - you bought that product to have everything you need right in your home! Now we are being pushed to get this console, but you can't use it without this thing (specialized peripherals, etc.)...well now you need this too (subscription)...and so forth and so on. Feel how you will about it, but that fact is they want your money, and they want more of it, and now they will want to have a constant link to you, from you, in order to get what THEY want from you. Get it?! We are no longer customers, we are their tenants. Time to move out! (and by "move out" I mean spite the industry by simply not purchasing this kind of shit)

If you damn microsoft fanboys

If you damn microsoft fanboys support this....you are stupid and narrow sighted. I am not a console player, i play on pc. Always online is complete and utter garbage. What is the next step after that hm? That you pay monthly fee for a singleplayer game? We need to make a stand for what is "right". Dont you have any backbone? Are you just gonna follow your favorite console even though your consumer freedom is getting fucked in the ass? Well, go ahead then. Support your "FAVORITE TEAM"....stupid children. Always online is even more stupid then achievements. For me, who is an adult. I make my own achievements. I dont need a company telling me when "Oh, you are so good! I will now pat you on the head for doing that...good work. Sit dog. SIT. Damn you. Curse you. Damn children will ruin everything.

Stupidity at best

So what are people meant to do if their internet connections go down for an unspecified period of time? ----- This is why the PS4 will do well against the new Xbox. The level of restriction being imposed on owners before they have even had the chance to get the console out of the box is ridiculous. And the PC will go from strength to strength against both. ------------ All of the time we hear from manufacturers and developers that they want to make their products dynamic and free but at the same time we get people like Orth telling us the that the Xbox is going to be highly linear. ----- All i can say is after the debacle of the 360, i wouldn't want another xbox anyway. And especially if i can't play a games without it being connected to the internet.

people not like always online

is microsoft put always online in the new xbox..... ====> FAIL all people go to PS4 ... is that clear!! people go to system not connect online always.. microsoft put that system always online... you kill yourself

I just would not get one

I just would not get one because if I buy a games console, I have no need for connectivity. Fuck twitter, fuck facebook, I have no desire to share my scores with a bunch of cunts to ponder over. Get a PC no? I have not had a 360/ps3. I worked in EUSony in England QA'ing the PS3 and it was shit. I took mine on release day to the pawn shop and I have not missed out on any game play experience during this time. I kind of see Consoles are for the uneducated who need to be shown the way forward. I make these choices, a decade in advance.

bye bye microsoft

although i preferred the 360 with the last generation of consoles, i wont get a 720 if it requires always online. I almost always have an online connection but there are some rare occasions when I wont. Of course I could go without playing my 720 during that time, but its the principle that gets me upset. If I bought a pc and my internet connection went out, should I not be able to use my pc? When people fork over several hundreds of dollars for a console, they should be able to use it offline just as they would with a pc. Sony really seems to have learned from their last console as they left the cell architecture for a more standard architecture that is appealing to developers. Everything they mentioned is developer friendly, the way the 360 was (with the exception of xbox live). I will miss games like halo and gears, but I can live without it.

Okay?

Obviously if you're reading this, you have internet... Do you get bored sometimes and shut your internet off? My internet is always on, just like everyone elses. What's the big deal, why does everyone complain about this? It's 2013, I suppose if someone said, your phone has to always be online to work, okay that might be a problem, some places like in tunnels don't get cell service, or way out in the boondocks in the woods in no mans land you won't get service... I don't see anyone backpacking with an xbox and television in their bag waiting to pop a tent and start blasting away zombies. You're home, you have internet, who cares?

what a douchebag responce

what a douchebag responce Your privileged so unless everyone is as privileged as you then they ain't shit. What about people who don't have wireless connections in their home. What about people on dialup. What about people who take their consoles on vaction with them to play in their hotel room and the hotel charges for internet usage by the minute. So just because your all high and mighty, you should still have some compassion for the lowly peasants who don't have it as good as you. Your me me me attitude makes you a scumbag

my thoughts

wtf

What's these occasions you don't have internet? When you get a bad grade and your parents turn it off? When you're moving and the isp is in process of switching service to the new house? When there's a massive city wide blackout and you're the only person on your block with a power generator?

Use your brain for a change

You sound terrible american to me. USA is the whole world, and if you live in a big city, there is nothing outside it. I live in a rich country, but there is still occasions when I can't be online (or at least with anything better than an old modem). Start using your head dumbass.

They will still buy it.

The only 2 games people mention when they say good games on xbox halo and gears. MicroSoft aren't worried, a lot of the ones who say they're not getting it because of this and that ARE going to get it regardless, just like the people with Playstations. Windows 7 sucked (they say) then the 8 sucked but they still bought it. Time will tell

solution

I found a solution to this problem. Buy a PS 4 or PC. If everyone buys a PS 4 it will make business sense to make awesome exclusive games for it. I don't have words bad enough for this guy.

heres what microsoft plan to

heres what microsoft plan to do and i hate it!!! first always online to make sure no pirated stuff works then used games will at least be limited to 2nd hand used 2 times then burn out .this will make getting third partys onboard very easy for exclusives infact all but sony owned exclusives will dive at the chance of this and everyone who wants to own all these great exclusives will be forced to buy 720. THIS SUX!!!!!!!!!!

Having a system that blocks

Having a system that blocks 2nd hand sales is only half of it, that alone won't attract devs. If customers skip the 720 due to its always online crap then devs will steer clear of it because its a doomed platform. So people should do just that, avoid buying the 720 for a few months, that should produce enough pressure to force microsoft to update it and remove the always on requirement.
