Microsoft Patents TV Achievements

Microsoft has filed a patent application for awarding console-like achievements to TV viewers.

"Television viewing tends to be a passive experience for a viewer, without many opportunities for the viewer to engage or have interactive experiences with the presented content," the patent filing reads. "To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content."

The filing doesn’t try to disguise the fact that this TV Achievements system is designed specifically to increase ad revenue by psychologically tricking people to watch shows they wouldn’t normally view. "By tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content," the patent explains clearly. "Thus increasing advertising opportunities."

According to the patent filing, TV Achievements can be awarded for watching single events such as the Super Bowl or a specific number of shows or even an entire series. Achievements can also be earned by performing specific Kinect actions while watching specific content. Additionally, TV Achievements can be linked to rewards ranging from new avatar items, in-game items or even physical prizes.

Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox One console comes with a Kinect 2 sensor that is designed to be always on and always connected to its owner’s TV.

In Patent world...

It's always about saving the idea in case of better use and keep others from making it better than you would do or amke money off their work. I don't see how it goes par with advertising unless you get achievements for watching advertisements, but the idea to gain something from seeing new shows on TV does appeal, many good shows died from people not knowing about them (mostly if you record your TV shows and skip ads or download them). I'm not saying achievements is the right thing, but surely has it's consumer base. I'm pretty sure next thing will be to ratio your Show watch time vs. Advertising watch time. People will leave TV on mute at ad channels all night to get their ratio up. Maybe I shouldn't say that, someone will patent this idea.

Second intencions

they just wana send this technology to monopoly TV more , so tv provider/game sellers can charge for each user watching tv or a game... Hope microsoft tv sucks and no one buy this patent!

Fuck You MicrokIller destroyer of VideoGames

Pretty soon Microsoft will be giving achievements for taking a shit and piss in the toilet. Double_Mega combo achievements will be given for flushing the load down the toilet. Diarrhea earns 2000 bonus Achievements if the little kiddies go to the washroom by themselves. Of course Microsoft's Camera will always be watching you.

Shouldnt that be illegal to patent that?

You are a rat in a cage. A bird without wings. A zoo-human. A dog tied to a pole. A tiger in a cell. A puny little ant. You are completely useless to us. We really don't see you as "fit" and we couldn't care less for your problems and your emotions. But you are the essence of our lives. As long as you exist we can manipulate you and use you to grow the polical power of our corporations.

No no, you missed the point

No no, you missed the point entirely. Let me explain again for the slow folk, in order to grant people achievements you need a whol einfrastructure behind the tv (or game) to track what each player/viewer is doing/watching, in doing so you can be granted achievements when you do/watch something. Their gain is twofold, the first is that some people enjoy getting achievements and may go the extra mile to get one by playing/watching more than they normally would, hence increasing the time you're exposed to advertising. Second, they track what you do/watch therefore they can use that trackign data for many purposes, the most obvious one being targetted advertising, however there are many others, more nefarious, purposes.

Theres plenty of those these

Theres plenty of those these days. im up and about more now than what i used to be years ago. i used to be able to sit an entire day playing a game to the end, not anymore. always too busy with family and work, but they do give me time to do what i love most and that is gaming. :)
