Kojima Explains How Metal Gear Solid Enemies Almost Lost Their ! Marks

Speaking to Weekly Famitsu, Hideo Kojima revealed that he was that close to removing the series' iconic exclamation mark from the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 5.

"I actually considered not including the '!' mark that appears when enemies discover you," he said. "… Considering the console specs, it would have been possible to substitute with facial expressions and gestures."

Fortunately, the rest of the team didn't get carried away with Kojima's whim. "The staff said, 'if you get rid of it, it'll cause an uproar!'" And thus, the "!" remained.

Kojima also decided to keep another one of the series not-that-realistic iconic features: the cardboard box camouflage.

Although MGS are well

Although MGS are well polished games, I still can't believe some people consider this anywhere near a realistic experience. The old Splinter Cells had such a better gameplay with tight controls, better camera views without having to watch 20 minutes of cutscenes. I see MGS more as an Interactive movie than anything else.

idk what people think the word realistic means, but I've yet to play a video game that's anywhere near realistic, in looks or play. Games you play now that you think are "realistic" 20 years from now will look like 16bit games compared to the games made 20 years from now... but I see that now. Anything else such as movement or actions in any game are just, not happening irl from the most skilled martial artist. If you've ever fired a gun irl (no matter how high tech of a microphone they ever use) will never comes close to being realistic in a video game. I hate people using the word realistic in games.
