Cliff Blezinski wants to make an old school FPS

Cliff Blezinski, Unreal Tournament alumni and founding gather of the Gears of War series, has been out of gaming for some time now, having bailed on the industry in a similar manner to Fez creator Phil Fish - though with slightly less digital screaming - after growing tired of the industry. Now though he's talking about coming back and he wants to make what he describes as a "proper," arena shooter.

The announcement was made during an episode of the DeathSquad podcast, where he said that he was looking to make a new shooter. When pressed for more, he said it would be first person, because that's what he knows, but not a modern shooter, a proper old school one.

"It's one of those things," he said. "A lot of these kids playing Call of Duty, I don't think they'd know what a proper arena shooter is if it'd hit them across the f****** head."

He's apparently fairly well along with pre-production of the game too, with concept art, and pitch ready to go, he just needs to secure funding. But he's not interested in going the crowd funding route, he wants to do it the traditional way.

"I don't want to do a Kickstarter. I've shown it to various parties, and there are nibbles... I wanna do something. It's just I'm not gonna do it if the time is not right and if the funding's not right."

What do you guys reckon? Would you like to see a new arena shooter with power ups, pick ups and speed, instead of the CoD style shooters of today with mountains of unlocks?

Thanks CVG.

Prob reason why we haven't seen any new shooters is that after Unreal Tournament decided to go "Sporty" and release a game every year we got burned out on buying the same game just different maps. Plus there would be a beatiful weapon that we love, then it would be replaced with something similar but just slightly off that annoyed us, just enough of a change to say it wasn't the same thing, kind of like how big pharma adds useless ingredients to old drugs to keep the patent so it can't go generic. It would be nice to see a modern looking Unreal Tournament/Quake arena style game but they gotta go easy on the sequels and make us feel like we bought something new.

SPEED!

That's primarily what's been missing for so many years. In modern games, even when you're "sprinting", you're still not traveling nearly as quickly as you were back in Quake II/TFC/UT etc. That hectic pace is probably not something that would lend itself well to consoles though, which is probably why we haven't seen nice, unrealistic, mad fast movement from the majority of mainstream games. Gamepads are poor enough substitutes for mice even at the plodding speeds which modern games have you move.

Seriously!

I was born in the early 80s, grew up in the late 80s and 90s and back then I LOVED playing games like Marathon, Quake, Doom ect, ect. It was a lot of fun playing Quake Arena, it was a simple game, no stupid extra D.L.Cs. You buy the game and that was it. Next new content was from a sequel. Young kids will never know the joy of buying a game and having it last for a year+ without having to buy extras to make it feel like a "full version" game.

Oh yeah!!

I forgot to add U.T to my list! I remember in high school, my senior year, a couple friends and I were teachers aides and we didn't have to do anything so she let me install U.T on three of the computers and we'd just sit and play it until class was over..... If I'm not mistaken, a hand full of years ago Steam did their annual Christmas sale and I got every U.T for like 5 or 10 bucks.... best purchase ever!
