Gate 88 is best described as an abstract action-strategy title. Decoding what that actually means is your task since words may prove inadequate tools to describe the game. Some words which will give you a feel for the game include action, dogfighting, strategy, fluidity, alliance and treachery.

Gmers who have had a taste of the game, often describe it as like subspace but with the ability to build turrets and command fighters. While a skillful pilot can decimate the enemy in one-on-one combat, a thoughtful player can overwhelm the opponent with strategic turret and fighter placements. However, only those who truly understand the intricate details of both action and strategy will win the day.

Because alliances can be broken on a whim, players must interpret the social situation of the game to ensure that each alliance is sincere. For example, it is not uncommon for an allied player to plant turrets and fighters within your base only to break the alliance and watch your empire crumble from within. Always be careful with your trust.

Gate 88 employs a unique user interface that allows players to pilot their ship while performing strategic operations. The tutorial and practice mode will get you up to speed.

While there is a strong single-player element to the game, the real fun begins when you start the Internet MultiPlayer mode. To begin your mind-altering Gate 88 experience, follow the download tab above.

Gate 88 is also available for Linux (x86), with a Mac OSX version currently in development.

Have been keeping an eye on this game and have been playing quite a bit over the months. This guy has put alot of work into this game and it's turned out awesome for a freebie. I sugest downloading this, no spy ware, and givein it a try. It's hard at first but just practice, then join an online game.

this game is pretty cool, it gets kind of annoying when you get out of a menu and ur ship begins flying somewhere because ur holding arrow keys, but other than that the graphics are nice, interface is unique, game's fun, addictive, and overall very nice.

Playing this game online is a royal pain in the ass, the tactics other people use are cheap, like building turrets next to your base and owning you. But once you get into the swing of things, it's real fun. They are also working on the single player/practice part quite a bit, which is a very good thing. More and more is going to be added to this game as time goes by, and they're working on makeing multiplayer games able to have more people. Keep watching this one, it's a work of art.

Pretty fun game. Youll most likely get owned the first few times you play online, but the practice and tutorial modes can help you alot. Remember, hotkeys are your friend!

What can I say? Other than that I have been with this game since development started (or as close as makes no odds) It has improved vastly. Online games play like a dream, and single player is completely customisable. As most other comments have said, however, watch out during online play - there's a culture growing of people who like to slaughter newcomers...

O__________OWow, people are actually saying something about this game and not just yelling at each other about stupid bullshit! Sounds fun, I haven't downloaded it (yet) but I just wanted to point out this is the first time I've actually seen people comment on a game here. Wow.
