It is official, there is a story doing the rounds that Hollywood is preparing a movie about the world of Halo. If a rumor hierarchy did exist, this particular one would be on its way to college to start a 3-year course to become a rumor but considering the current buzz around anything Halo, we just had to report on it.

The story does go into some detail however and if any of the names associated with the movie are correct then the chemistry sounds perfect for the job. Which Halo fan would say no to having Ridley Scott, (Blade Runner, Alien), direct, Ed Harris appear as Captain Keyes and Samuel L. Jackson as Captain Johnson. It appears that Bungie has been in talks with Warner Brothers regarding a movie but has insisted that it will only consider handing over the movie rights if the original Alien director and writer are involved, something which may throttle the project since Ridley Scott is not very easy to get.

According to insider information, appearing on ain't-it-cool-news, Scott has, apparently, been offered the script, storyboards etc. before and passed on doing a Halo movie but that was all before Halo 2 started breaking all sorts of sales records.

The idea of Ridley Scott directing a Halo movie seems the perfect match of high-tech effects with a traditional tense directing style and the thought of large epic-scale battles from the game appearing on the big screen under Scott's direction is definitely pleasing. It will be however, extremely disappointing if the entire project fails to take off due to one person's refusal. There is no doubt that Ridley Scott is the perfect man for the job but there has to be some other director who can handle the project; possibly a European movie directed by Mike Leigh so that we can discover the social aspects of Master Chief's career and the personal journey he has to take in order to reconcile his differences with his ageing and sick father.

Since everything is at the speculation stage for the time being, we will leave you with one thought of a Halo movie directed by Ridley Scott in which tense Black Hawk Down battles are followed by claustrophobic psychological tension in the style of Alien and where breathtaking photography is accompanied by epic orchestrated vibrant music as Hans Zimmer usually creates. Not bad is it?

Who would you like to see directing and starring in a Halo movie, which game do you believe is better suited to provide the story for the first movie, please share your thoughts and ideas in the user comments section.

Halo Movie in Talks

if halo just happened to be the ultimate xbox selling game of all time, then no doubt, the movie will be great as well. only question however, should warner bros produce it or lucasfilms?

Halo Movie in Talks

one last thing. WHAT BOOK???!!!!! i havent heard of a book on halo but...whatver, you guys say u read it then u read it. and the music should be the same as in the game and the same composer. since jeff goldblum is the tallest actor in hollywood, next to christopher lee, and the chief should be tall and buff (suit), get ol jeff cause if he can play the fly, he can play masterchief. by the way, i have been looking info up on the halo and i cant find wut the diamter is supposed to be on the structure. u guys know possibly?

Halo Movie in Talks

Ridley Scott directing would be perfect. I think Diesel or the Rock as the Chief would work, I mean they just gotta be a hulking mass and its not like they have real long speaking parts either. gotta get midgets as grunts though, that would rock. samuel L. Jackson as Johnson would be awesome as well. maybe ed harris as capt. keyes? depending on when they want this movie to take place in relation to the games and whatnot.

Halo Movie in Talks

Man I think if they did do a live action Halo movie, my opinion for Master Chief personally is The Rock, A. he's built (can't see that through the armor but whatever), B. He's got a kick ass voice man! C. the only god damn thing he does is action movies where he kicks the s**t out of people so, why not?

Halo Movie in Talks

I think George Lucas and/or Steven Speilberg should direct the Halo movie. After all, George Lucas' Star Wars series is an absolute hit. The space naval battle scenes are incredible, and the costume artist team could produce accurate Halo character models. Steven Speilberg with his natural gift for directing fantastic Sci-Fi films would be an invaluable asset to the Halo movie project.

Halo Movie in Talks

Oh yeah another reason to put The Rock in the game is because he'll have already had action movie based on top-selling video games experience thanks to 'Doom' the movie, the more game-movie experience, the better.

Halo Movie in Talks

Ed Harris would be the bomb as Keyes. But sammy as the sarge. They should find someone more rough. Everyone sees him as the gentle jedi type not some cursing scruffy hard ass.

Halo Movie in Talks

once again every one seems to forget the mexican in the game i think i should play becuase iam a better mexican then the one in the game. I fit the description of a perfect mexican i have the mexican hieght of 5ft 6inch i have the mexican accent i have the the brown skin and iam brown and pround and brown and down

Halo Movie in Talks

i think that master chief should be played by the rock because for one i love wrestling and for another he's awesome man! and they should base the game on Halo C.E. because that game was a bit better than halo #2

Halo Movie in Talks

I dont care who plays Master Chief. it's a no brainer for tall and built. but for the voice, the same guy from the game would be good but what would be better is that his talking is at a minimum like in the game. thats the M.C. that bungie made! and bungie knows alot more than hollywood.

Halo Movie in Talks

The Rock...does the crapfest that is Chronicles of Ridd**k ring a bell? The game was a million times better than the movie. Not what we want for Halo. The Master Cheif should stay in his armor most of the movie and be shown as some generic man at the end. The movie should be based on the two books by Eric Nylund to show what we didn't get to see in the games (between Halo 1+2 and how the Spartan program was created.) I don't want to see the same battles in movie form that I actually got to play through on my Xbox. It could show the space battles, military politics, and everything else, including the other living Spartans mentioned in the book. Have Eric Nylund write the plot anlong with Ridley Scott. I don't want to see a Lara Croft type movie. Use the books to make a great movie on what we missed from the games.

games to movies 99.9% of time suck major ass. halo story ( game wise) sucks ass. HL1/2 has a better story and that one kinda sucks. these are frist person shooters. FPS's arent suppose to have a expansive story, its just for filler 90% of the time. and people who dont want to play hl2 because they love halo are retards, thier games. they dont have anything amazingly new . you run around and shot at things, wow amazing.

Halo Movie in Talks

I agree. Games to movies usually suck .. acctually all the time suck. I can't get over how stupid people are with this. Halo one was a terrible game, just cause it had multi and was "so freaking cool for the xbox" doesn't mean jack. First of all the xbox has two or three year old system and can not even be compaired to Half-Life or FarCry. Halo 2 was just Halo 1 reheated with some more aliens added. People wake up. George lucas? That would be terrible. He has ruined the starwars series. If he can't show off the amazing powers of the Jedi how would be be able to do a lame MasterC. Honestly people, Wake up and smell the ashes.

Halo Movie in Talks

I think in the movie they should show the Pillar of Autumn crash seen from halo 1 right at the beginning and then post "Thirty Years Earlier" at the bottom of the screen and show the fall of Reach

Halo Movie in Talks

in the movie, i think peter jackson or stephen spielberg should direct it. master chief should be played by david prowse (darth vader) and cortana is just the same ol computer animated woman with the same voice as said before on this website ten thousand quartrillion times. and this time if it is a sequel in between movies, the halo instead of just breaking up at the end of the first one should be somehow pulled down to the planet by gravity.

Halo Movie in Talks

The first movie should definately be "The Fall of Reach". I know the guys a bum, but Dolph Lungren would make a great MC. As for the other Spartans doesn't really matter as long as they are all tall. Dialog should come second to great as realistic as you can make a sci-fi action. Not real sure about the covenant. It will be hard to do well without cgi, but not cartoonish for sure. I have to agree on Ed Harris and the Captain and some new actor for sarge. The Marines must be foul mouthed and tempered because that's how real Marines are. This movie has incredible potential if done right.

Halo Movie in Talks

nm. the person who would best play master chief is christopher lee and the voice would be the original guy's. christopher lee because he is the tallest actor in hollywood today, eventhough he is 83 years old. wit hcomputer they should make him jump or dive if needed. since of his age he cant do that. another choice would be the guinness world record holder for the tallest basketball player. he would be chewbacca's height and really big because of the siut. either way, its perfect!

Halo Movie in Talks

I think the movie...first movie should be on the fall of reach. Also i think either lucasfilms or New Line should do the movie. I mean C'mon! Lord of the Rings was one of the greatest movies (graphically/visually) of all time. Star Wars Graphics would also do VERY nicely. in my opinion, these two hits blurred the line of CGI and real actors into dust. Samuel L. Jackson would make a perfect Sgt. Johnson for the simple fact that he ACTS!!! so what if he did a peaceful jedi? he HAD to for the part. i bet you $20 that he's been a hard-ass cussing monster in some movie. s**t, he was pretty mean in Deep Blue Sea. Cortana...I'm going to leave alone because i don't care if shes CGI or an actor. Vin Diesel's voice for the MC would do very nicely. but i don't know if either him nor the Rock would fit an acting part for him. Master Chief is truly a built man who is very strong. but he is also very intelligent and lethally fast. No offence to either of them, but I think they'd give off to much of a brute-vibe. I don't know who Ed Harris is so i'll leave Keyes alone. The COVENANT should be I think both Actors and CGI. Obviously Jackals and Grunts should be CGI, but Brutes(if they are included), Elites, and Hunters shouldbe partially acted out by some anonymous actors. Marines should of course be the bad-mouthed dirty killing machines. But as in the book Fall of reach, they dont like John, or the young MC. This is when the dirtyness should be given off. But as he grows to be a great leader and legend, the marines he works with should show a humerous and witty side for laughs indeffinitely. All in all, i just pray that this movie will become an epic as the Games and the books have. Good luck to all the people involved.

Halo Movie in Talks

Halo and Halo 2 are the greatest games ever made. Whats not to like about them. Those people down the list sayin halo sucks probably never even played it. If you hate halo so much then keep playin half-life and shut yer face.

Halo Movie in Talks

I think the movie should be animated with the graphics of HALO 2 or better! You cant really suspect to find people Dress up as the Master Chief!!!! It would be best animated witht he voices of who play the people in the game!!!!

Unfortunately, myself like many gamers and halo enthiuseists tend to think what COULD be good and not what will ACTUALLY be good. Let us look at the short list of games made into movies: Mortal Kombat(guilty pleasure I must admit) but from a film standpoint, it sucked. Street Fighter? I've taken more entertaining dumps. Mario Brothers? I didn't eat Italian for a month after I saw that. And Resident Evil? Not too bad, but it ran away from the game. A film based on Halo is a good idea; which is what the gamer side of me says. But the film production student in me says no. Would I love to see it made? Of course i would! But it can't be another Starship Troopers - a good idea torn to shreds by those who don't know what a good film is. We shouldn't get hung up on one director - Ridley Scott. Afterall, Kingdom of Heaven wasn't that great, and Alien was almost filmed 30 years ago. I think we can all agree that his films along with other well know directors (Spielberg, Robert Rodrigez etc) were much better in the 70s and 80s. Something has been lost on their new films compared to the old ones. I think we need to look to a production company like Dreamworks. Yes it would be good to get an acclaimed director like Scott, but the odds are greatly incresed if Bungie takes an AVAILABLE offer. I know Bungie is a very large very wealthy company, but don't think the name is going to conjure up famous names. Afterall, gaming is still a growing industry, and while it is a billion dollar entity world wide, Hollywood is still hesitant on the idea of game films.A good game film needs depth, and quite honestly, following the halo one or two completely may not be the best idea. Perhaps following a different hero in the Halo universe might be best suited for film. That way, you can make up new characters, love interests and drama that will make a good film happen. And also, good effects can only take you so far, it cannot make a good story - just ask George Lucus (all the stormtroopers w

First of all, i just wanna say that i'm a huge halo and halo 2 fan.......All you people that think halo and halo 2 suck, should be tortured....As for a HALO 1 or 2 movie, i think it would be pretty cool. and as for the role of MC....MEL GIBSON!

Halo Movie in Talks

The first Halo movie should be focused on the first book, Halo: The Fall of Reach. First contact with the Covenant, creation of the Spartans, creation of Cortana, the training, the missions that the Spartans take before the inevitable destruction of their homeworld of Reach. The climatic ending should be the discovery of Halo. I am curious as to the thoughts of others in this matter.

Halo Movie in Talks

Peter mate just for info the reason the movies you mentioned sucked coz the game companys let holywood ruin it but microsoft and bungie said to the movie companys we want 50% controll and if we dont like the idea's you want to put in we will pull out and sue you and think about this microsoft could easyily BUY holywood anyday and i leave you all with a joke Bill gates dies and go's to heaven he says to god "your in my chair"

Halo Movie in Talks

i rekon this movie could make or brake the whole halo thing. it better be well written, even if it is from the fall of reach.this movie like joins many made from games or comics, and like the others, the themes, setting, characters and plot have great potetial. but there are tons of movies made from comics and games that sucked mortal combat, and lets face it, we only watched tomb raider for the boobs. lets hope this doesn't join them.not to say a good film isn't without boobs, of course.there will be millions thrilled or millions dissaopointed the day this film is released.

Halo Movie in Talks

I think if they are going to make a movie for Halo the should have a bit of the book the Fall of Reach in it. but other than that I think that it would make a great movie if they got the right director.

Halo Movie in Talks

One last final note. I think that the ring should not only be the size of our moon, but it should rotate like a planet as well. even circle the nearest star in the story. And Matthew McGrory should play master chief.

Halo Movie in Talks

I think that the story should focus on the first games theme but possibly tieing in some of the sequels ideas. ie the prophets, oracles and such, but not go into too much detail, just stick mainly to a tense feeling that the covanent will find earth and talking a bit about the fall of reach maybe. I would like to see some apprehensive moments with the flood running throughout, like groups of marines dissappearing etc. And finally I think it would make the movie so much better if the covenant were darker natured, none of the grunts making smart comments and stuff like that, that for me spoiled the story to the games. It was hard to take it seriously

Halo Movie in Talks

Hey genius. If you didn't know. There is a Halo Trilogy out right now. Obviuosly the first movie should fall in line with the first book. It starts at the begining of the Spartan story.

Halo Movie in Talks

one more thing, you might notice Cortana says in the first game "if I still had fingers they'd be crossed" I think possobly this could be explained. Although it does run the risk of becominga bit lame.

Peter Mchilon, actually mentionned DreamWorks taking over the movie of Halo! loll, hey dude, didn't you know that Sony owns that production line, Mr. student Producer? And do you know who makes PlayStation? The ennemy of the Xbox...? Yeah...Sony makes the PlayStation, and Microsoft the Xbox, do you actually think that the idea of their ennemy making the movie of their biggest game passed through their minds? I don't think so! lol The Production companies that will probably take over, will be either FOX, Paramount Pictures or MGM, and no one else. They are the bigges movie production companies, and are the only ones able to meet Microsoft's demands. Which is: 10 Million Dollars for the rights, 15% of the Gross revenue of the Movie, and a complete Chartered airplane containing all 1st class seats and service for Microsoft Employees to watch the Premieresss of the upcoming Halo series. Microsoft is very anxious to begin and see the progress of the Movie. In fact, they're now letting the 3 majors movie Production Companies bid on the rights. Microsoft plans on starting production in January 2006. Some other rumor web site say September 2006, but I think that's a little too soon.I wouldn't mind if the movie was made in complete animation, but only if the graphics were as good as in the Final Fantasy Movie, which had awsome graphics! But what would really impress me, would actually seeing the movie with real actors. That would be pretty aswsome. People on this Forum said that if the Movie sucked, it would ruin Halo, in the gaming industry. Well if the movie ever sucks, even if Microsoft has 50% of the control over the movie, and will redo the movie if it's not good, real gamers won't change their minds about Halo because of a Movie, they will like the game, and the series of the game, because the game is good, not because the movie was good or bad. I believe that the only possible influence that the movie can give, is encouraging many others to play the game after wa
