1 Million PlayStation 4 Units Sold On Launch Day

Sony announced today that 1 million PlayStation 4 units have been sold during the console's first 24 hours in market.

The company didn't reveal the number of units shipped to retailers, so it is not clear if all stock has been sold out or not. Nonetheless, most retailers are reporting that their PS4 stock is depleted or nearly so.

"PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal," said PlayStation group chief executive Andrew House.

"Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29," he added.

"We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support."

Last August, Sony announced that PlayStation 4 preorders surpassed the 1 million mark. Most analysts expect that this figure rose to 1.5 million by the time the console launched this week.

PlayStation 4 will launch in Europe on November 29th. Sony expects to sell 3 million units by the end of 2013. Japanese launch will take place nearly two months after that.
