3dfx stops making cards

The graphics-chip company is about to abandon the card-manufacturing business. The company plans to close its Juarez, Mexico, card manufacturing plant and remove itself from the business of building the graphics cards that reside in desktop PCs. This is an abrupt switch from the December 1998 takeover of STB Systems, which 3dfx heralded as a move that would put them in charge of their own destiny. Instead, that move -- combined with numerous production delays and supply problems -- has removed the company from its once-dominant position in the industry.

"We're trying to be more fiscally responsible," said Lisa Grubb, a spokesperson for the company. "Basically, we're reinventing ourselves."

The company says it will now sell its chips to third-party manufacturers, who will create the boards that go in computers. Because 3dfx is in its quiet period (its latest earnings are due next week), officials declined to say how much of a write off would result from the closing of the Mexican plant.

The company's not betting its entire future on PC graphics, though. While it will retain the "Voodoo" name - a very familiar one in graphics and arguably the company's most valuable asset -- it is branching into new territory. It recently released the VoodooTV card, allowing PC users to use their computer monitor as a TV screen. And it plans to use the recently completed acquisition of competitor GigaPixel Corp. to forge into new areas, such as set-top boxes, cellular phones, game consoles and handheld PCs.

3dfx made 2 great crads V1 & V2.V3 and V4-5 was slow when they came, and expensive. But it ain´t good that 3dfx don´t make cars any more. It can only mean one thing for us, more expensive cards in the future.

just for the record blackbird, a video card running at 120fps will appear substantially smoother than at 30fps as the monitor ouput and human the eye are out of sync. if your running at 30fps, you'll only see about 10-15 of those. if you do the math, about 90fps should be adequate to completely fool the human eye. try it, believe me it's true. btw I agree with you, people are too quick to jump on the anti-voodoo bandwagon. and opengl sucks big time, both in appearance and performance.

Lol, 3dfx will still own. I think that it might even be better for the company. They can dedicate all their energy into designing a chip instead of worrying about salesmanufacturing. This will make 3dfx a superior card. 3dfx owners, don't worry, a driver solution is probably on its way.

Voodoo2 was 3DFX's moment of glory, but since then major breakthroughs have been few and far between. The T-Buffer was a joke! Hey you guys try and play severence with a voodoo5 and see how playable it is in a decent res. I used to love 3dfx! The voodoo1 dropped my jaw when I saw GLQuake for the first time. But nowadays things have moved on, Glide just doesn't cut the cheese compared to Hardware T&L. I always hoped 3DFX would bring out a hybrid of a glide API with T&L... but it never happened. They need to take a breather I agree, but wouldn't it be wierd having 3dfx printed on your mobile phone?
