AMD Reveals Triple-Core Phenom

AMD announced the addition of AMD Phenom triple-core processors to its desktop roadmap.

AMD Phenom triple-core processors, expected to be the world's first PC processors to integrate three computational cores on a single die of silicon, can help deliver the visual experience, performance and multitasking capabilities of true multi-core technology to a broader audience.

"With our advanced multi-core architecture, AMD is in a unique position to enable a wider range of premium desktop solutions, providing a smarter choice for customers and end users", said Greg White, vice president and general manager, Desktop Division, AMD. "This innovation is a direct result of our development of the industry's first true, native quad-core design, coupled with AMD's manufacturing flexibility, to create multi-core processors in two, three, and four computational core configurations on a single die of silicon. As a customer-centric company, AMD is committed to working with our OEMs to deliver compelling value propositions across their multi-core product families with capabilities that address their requirements and aspirations."

AMD Phenom processors with three cores are a response to demand for increased performance delivered by multi-core processors when running state-of-the-art applications. According to Mercury Research, quad-core processors represented less than two percent of desktop shipments in Q2 2007. AMD believes this suggests a need for a wider selection of multi-core solutions. Triple-core AMD processors may stimulate broader multi-core adoption with a product family that scales to more points-of-entry for the customer.

"Microsoft is excited to see AMD creating new technologies like the AMD Phenom triple-core processors", said Bill Mitchell, corporate vice president of the Windows Hardware Ecosystem at Microsoft Corp. "We see potential for power and performance improvements through triple-core processing in the industry and are exploring with AMD the possibility of taking advantage of this in the Microsoft family of products."

The true multi-core design of the upcoming AMD Phenom processor family of products, based on Direct Connect Architecture, features an integrated memory controller, accelerating performance for productivity, content creation, entertainment, and gaming. In addition, this next-generation architecture includes AMD's Balanced Smart Cache for rapid access to memory, with a shared L3 cache for leading-edge performance on multi-threaded software. With HyperTransport 3.0 and up to 16 GB/second of high bandwidth I/O, upcoming AMD Phenom processors are designed for a unique visual experience with amazing HD video and gaming resolutions, as well as high-speed disk and network interfaces. In addition, Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology enables independent frequency adjustments to each processor core, and the HyperTransport bus and memory controller for a cooler and quieter PC.

AMD Phenom triple-core processors are expected to be available during Q1 2008, while AMD Phenom quad-core processors remain on schedule to ship in 2007.

AMD Reveals Triple-Core Phenom

Let me tell you how this works:AMD's architechture is nativelly 4 cores. They go through testing and one of the 4 has a defect. They block it and sell you a deffective Quad-core as an innovative Triple-core! Engenious... just like with pipelines in GPUs...Intel however does not have native quad core support, but rather double dual core, so the only need to test dual cores separatelly and glue working ones toghether. That's why they won't ever be announcing such a product.BTW... FIRST POST :D:D:D

so if u call a person a noob it means he hasnt done his homework ;) ooooo boy teachers should pick that up. Theweaver wannabe smart c**t. I'm more upset on lines "4 bzillion broken" and "intel still rules" cuz without AMD the prices wouldnt be what they are now. fckin american children forum

I'm not American, I'm not a wannabe anything, and my CV would mop yours all over the place....and I smell Fanboy... are you jealous my child?"To noobz below", "wannabe c**t"... can't you actually think of something elaborate to support your opinions instead of just calling names? Soooo sad...

AMD Reveals Triple-Core Phenom

Umm guys, like, who cares, they still have Quadcore Phenom chips arriving. i mean i'm sure the 3core versions will be cheaper. Now whats important is how it'll rank up next to the Core2duo and quads from Intel. Oh and may i know what you do for a living Mr waver?...

Anonymous at 8:57You are right, I wanted to share a bit of wisdom with you all, but not for praise, rather to expose a corrupt marketing strategy. It's sad how it offends you... talk about my ego.And if it was an ego thing I wouldn't have written 2 paragraphs of relevance. I'd just have written FIRST POST as speedly as I could. It's more the fact I rarelly ever post here and the I had a perfect opportunity to joke a bit.

This all nice but intel's chips are a month away and are on 45nm process so they also require half the power of current c2d's and will offer 20% more speed or so. I like AMD but they're going too slow and are falling behind too much. Whoever offers best speed/dollar is my choice.

You never know what AMD has planned next, why break your back trying to beat the leader of today when you can just be the leader of tomarrow? AMD could have some amazing concepts up their sleeves going through R&D right now. So before you call it a night for AMD, think about the future.

theWaver: I do not fully agree with you about corrupt marketing. Sure triple-cores are going to be damaged quads. But that doesn't change the fact that it brings more variety to us consumers(I hate that word). I also don't believe native quads is a mistake, as it'll push future technology even further. For the record, I have never owned an AMD CPU but the Phenom does interest me.

Who gives a blunt nail worth of worry whether these chips are going to be the quad core chip failures, what it means to joe public is the extra flexibility of a third processor for cheaper than a quad core and hopefully not much more that a dual core.If you could rig a dual socket system with 2 of these lowend and with some decent cooling think of the overclocking possibilities.Time and time again people bring everything back to just a marketing sloshover, that's the way business works you schmuck but it's us who benefits...sorta
