ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

ATI launched its new Radeon X800 XL 512MB graphics card, making sure that even the most demanding textures in a game are now fully available to gamers. Developers can now focus on supporting 512MB graphics cards by raising the visual quality bar for their next-generation games currently in development.

According to ATI the Radeon X800 XL 512MB is already in use by developers including BioWare; Crytek; Digital Extremes; Funcom; Gas Powered Games; Grin; id Software, inc; Juice Games; Lionhead; NCsoft; Remedy and Valve. iD must have bene using one of these cards for quite some time as the company had claimed last summer that Doom 3 supports 512MB cards.

No matter what the shader model, having the space to store the best high definition textures local to the VPU is critical. This is particularly important in true next generation development, with complex materials requiring concurrent access to multiple high definition source maps. That, along with techniques using multiple render targets for deferred rendering components and demand for high definition, anti-aliased back buffers mean that the new 512MB development platform from ATI offers us important new degrees of freedom, said Ian Moran, Lead Programmer, Juice Games.

The 512MB of memory on ATI's card makes our games run at high frame rates even on scenes with very high amounts of textures, says Tim Rance, Chief Technical Officer, Lionhead Studios. Our games run more smoothly in these cases because everything can be stored in video memory with no thrashing of the texture cache.

The Radeon X800 XL 512MB has both immediate and long-term advantages, said Gary McTaggart, Graphics Architect, Valve. Texture thrashing during a frame render is drastically reduced or eliminated. This is even more beneficial in the case of High Dynamic Range rendering (HDR), which we are in the process of releasing for the Source engine, where environment and light maps are eight times as large. Further down the road, memory hungry technologies like 3D textures, used in things like procedural noise for detail textures, some fog algorithms, and color correction, will benefit as well from the capabilities of this new card.

Radeon X800XL 512MB will be available in May, with an MSRP of USD 449.

even if thats not true, ATi is still better than nvidia in every way vr possible. Nvidia drivers suck ass, and get released once a year basically. And ATi releases new drivers once a month so that any problems can be fixed faster. Not because they have so many problems to fix. Nvidia cards have low performance, and the little "way its meant to be played" things, are just a little logo that nvidia pays a ton of money for the ppl to put it there. And if u noticed, more and more companies are starting to put ATi on there games instead. Its kinda like AMD vs Intel on gaming reason...intel just sux

Nvidia doesn't releses Drivers every 5 seconds like ATi cause they rarely have problems or bugs in them, unlike ATi's, every now & then cause they have soo much problems & bugs they're not keeping up with their FLooD of Drivers.

Nvidia doesnt have problems ? Keep ur facts straight dude. Anyone remember when screensavers toasted the cards ? What about the SLI = king of instability? Or when 6x00 series came out, they wrote something like - great card... but we experienced alot of crashes etc. It took/takes months for nvidia to fix things.I cant recall all this shit, but if you are a megagames or some tech forum regular visitor, you'd know.I got radeon 9700 pro. a good card, but a dead card - replaced by 9800 pro. Only problems I had was in few games developed 4 Nvidia with their stupid logo and slogan, such as COD.

" wonder how this will compare to a couple of 6800GTs in sli? "To bad that ATI is coming out with the dueling cards in time.Nvidia is the biggies waste of time. They make shitty drivers. They f**ked up bad. They had it then they droped the ball. ATI saw the ball drop and kick Nvidia is the BALLS. Nvidia will not make a come back.

You stupid ATI fan F**KsNvidia's updates dont come monthly because theres hardly anything wrong with the updates unlike ATI who needs updates frequently every month or week for that quick to release updates means there are problems over problems with the update or ATI card or both hahaa.About SLI, sure its unstable now, but its getting better, by the end of Christmans this year, instead of having an SLI list of probably 80 games playable by SLI, it'd have almost every game old and new to take advantage of this great technology, when i mean old i mean not like 10 year old games lol.AND why do you think ATI is making their own SLI version? because SLI is going to be the new standard, actually it is the standard 2 cards are better than one, double the power, double the performance.include SLI with video array technology and the difference is realized and ATI is way behind in this technology, forget one GPU'shope you all can save up for and SLI rig

well Nvidia and ATi release a very and very strong 3D cards. We can say that sometimes Nvidia is better and sometimes ATi better. But cant know what card will be better for me ...So I checked pictures and benchmarks of Nvidia and ATi and I realized that ATi cards have better graphics precision, better textures, colors but poor in FPS.Nvidia has not a graphic presision, no better textures, but can have a highly FPS.Id say ATi is for Graphics and Nvidia is for FPS. If we combine Nvidia+ATi technology we can get a Monstrous card. But Thats will never happen =(Im for ATi because I like to take my time to check every graphic, texture of the game I got so I can enjoy the game and support the developers.

Nicator Of Nvidia, ATI updates are the best thing ever to come out of the gpu areana. The sheer ability to address problems on a monthly basis is great for all consumers. Why the hell would you not want that? That's like saying...."i just bought this new car, and i know it's new and wont have issues with it...so don't give me that extended warrenty for free...." ATI is offering a service. A service Nvidia refuses to do. ALL GPU COMPANIES HAVE DRIVER ISSUES. It's how they handle them that is important. ATI learned this prior to the 9700. Nvidia has not. They once had frequent driver releases. Bck in the Geforce1-2-3 DAYS. No more. Why Nvidia? You need them desperately. Especially for SLI support. Man do you need it! Nvidia should have had this type of driver support when FarCry and UT2004 were released. Those 2 games had major driver problems on Nvidia cards. Major. Nvidia users had to wait almost 5 months for the problems to be corrected! That's when Nvidia released there next forceware drivers. Too long! And those drivers had issues with other games. AND SLI ONES ALSO. If a patch cannot fix a problem, your screwed with Nvidia because they come out with new drives every 5-6 months. Nvidia needs to follow ATI's driver model. To say Nvidia does not have those driver issues is quite wrong. Infact they have numerous involving SLI. Too mnay to mention. So many unstable games when creating your own profiles. Which is a task in itself to create. Make a profile for one game, screw up another. Crash your system. Reboot. Sound familar SLI users? As far as ATI's sli version. If it works as well as many insiders claim it's working, i find their system alot better. Why? Simply because you can connect DIFFERENT GPUS TOGETHER. Starting from a 9700pro, all the way to the upcoming R520 chipset. Moreover, you can connect up to 34 cards together if they make a MOBO for it. Just ask the US Army. They did it 4 years ago with ATI's Multi-GPU setup. Bottom line. The very fact that you do

...continued...The very fact that you do not have to have the same exact card and the same exact BIOS to run ATI's SLI setup is a major plus. Nvidia SLI? Both card must be from the SAME manufacturer. Use the Same BIOS. Even then, with all that, if a profile is not setup, it does not work as a 2 card setup. And the driver issues and system instability. Love those crashes. Learn some facts before you post.

I dont really like the idea of 512, 128 is plenty, any more encourages programers to be lazy and relying on texturing, instead of shaders.Did you know that you really dont need to store textures? as theprodukkt demonstrates, all tetures can be generated...Have a look yourselves.

"And plus ATI is made my smelly french-canadians"Dumbass. The company is located in Markham, Ontario. It's not a french company. Dumbass."include SLI with video array technology and the difference is realized and ATI is way behind in this technology, forget one GPU's"Way behind? Hmmmm. For the $1200US you need to spend on SLI: MotherBoard. 2 GPU's. You cannot use dual monitors when playing games!!!!! It does not work! Very much like MPEG4 encoding for the 6800 chipset. Something Nvidia claimed would be a major feature of the 6800 chips. Never worked. Do you even know what video array means???? TRUE Video Array means the ability to use DIFFERENT GPU's in tandem!!!! Not just different manufactures GPU's. Even Alienware's Video Array technology does not allow for that. Even with their dual GPU technology, you must use identical cards. Alienwares version has a step up on SLI in that you can use multiple moniters with multiple GPU's. Nvidia SLI cannot! ATI's version can! The US ARMY has been using it for more then 4 years now.If the details for ATI's Multi-GPU format hold true, then they will have the only true Video Array Technology....The ability to use different GPU's together. IE: 9700PRO link with a XT800 linked with the R520. That's True Video Array. Read about Alienwares version here.[url removed] you can read about Nvidia's inability to use dual monitors in SLI setups[url removed]

I am sure future directx 9 games will be able to take advantage of th extra onboard RAM. ATI Open GL performance is questionable to begin with. Either way, buying this now would be a bit foolhardy as games that can use it probably won't come out until next year. The only game that I am aware of that can use 512mb of vRAM is doom III for its uncompressed textures. Waste of money for any gamer. I agree with a post below; this only encourages developers to get lazy and just slap in more hi-res textures to make it look better without innovating. Either way, the benchmarks at Anandtech speak for themselves. It is useless at this time.

i love how most people ignore the fact that there are other companies other than ati and nvidia, that actually make better, more powerful video cards, just there not aimed for games, for professionals, like hte ones who need games, who actually need the power, i like ati simply because i have had better experiance with there products, and ati cards don't skimp on features like nvidia, wasn't the geforce 1-3 core basically the same? at least even the budget cards with ati have supported all the dx9 features for quite some time

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

"Nvidia's updates dont come monthly because theres hardly anything wrong with the updates unlike ATI who needs updates frequently every month or week for that quick to release updates means there are problems over problems with the update or ATI card or both hahaa."ERRR WRONG...like i said in my very first post, ATi comes out with new drivers because they fix the problems they have quickly, not becaus4e there are so many. On the other hand is nvidia. Their drivers have so many f**kin problems its not even funny. When i had my nvidia card, i got some new drivers and my system crashed...never happened with my ATi cardSSSSS. Nvidia has very crappy6 drivers, and when theres a huge problem, its not fixed for almost a half a year later. Go ahead abnd by an nvidia card...its not my loss by any means. It just makes ATi cards cheaper because of competition of retards. If u had ANY knowledge of a computer, and how the games run and work, ud understand why ATi is so much better. As for SLi, the vast vast majority of ppl who have it dont know how it works, just have it cause they are rich and can afford it to make htem the best...

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

i dont know if 512 is a good setup. Maybe for scenes with extremely large textures or some video editing ( in some level ).This board is NOT THE FASTEST BOARD OF ATI, yet costs near it or more. They said it speeded up HL2. It's great, but has anyone seen its textures. There are face textures with resolution 1024x768 = ALOT and quite pointless ! It should be near 256x256

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

higher res tectures just make the sceen look better, especially when the screen resolution gets really high (1600x1200+) Thats when the high res textures make a huge difference. Now for ur sake, im guessing ur not running the game that high, so 256x256 tex's would possibly be good for u, but not others

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

Nvidia has very bad drivers at this time, they need to start updating once a month like ATI. Maximum PC has already stated that ATI has the most stable drivers available. Also Dell has chosen ATI to lead its high-end computers. I don't give a shit about the 512 mb, but the X800XL kick serious ass.

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

Funny how the tables have turned with driver support. Once Nvidia was regarded by John Carmack himself as having the "golden standard" for drivers. Of course this was before the FX chips and the cheating that followed. Too bad we cant go back in time and test those early Detonator drivers the way they test them now. You remember those drivers form Nvidia in the Geforce1,2,3,4 days? The drivers that caused 70-100% increases in performances. Too bad back then, reviewrs never checked for custom clipping planes and other IQ issues for drivers. If so, i bet Nvidia would not have had those huge perofrmance increases. Now because of through driver testing, Nvidia drivers are no longer the "golden standard" Quite ironic how ATI drivers are now more stable and offer monthly support. Times have change....

Bitmapping is inferior....And this is what 512 megs is good for, texture mapping.Like i said, textures could be generated through geometry, and let the lightmaps take care of the rest.Thats my major gripe about doom3, everything is textered, even things that dont benifit from texturing like fireballs and explosions, besides the fact that the majority of the textures you cant see because of the projected shadows...And doom cant support proper culling because carmack still uses opengl(even if its 2.0, its still old)However you look at half life 2 and the majority of its surfaces are mathmatic, normal maps, displacment maps the works, and it always seems to keep excelent frame rates, even with massive battles or huge cityscapes. For those who dont understand what im talking about, look at the incredibles, none of those charater were skinned in the classic sense, Even if renderman takes alot of horsepower, it takes a relitivly small ammount of memory compared to others like rhino or maya.ATI should invest its time into perfecting its shaders, allowing them to take larger strings..Look at ruby.....

r520 is coming in a month give or take a little. Not a couple months. and same with person below, im also getting an r520, which is an x950. And btw, person 2 below me, the r500 is for xbox only, not a pc release. If the r520 is really as good as mentioned, this is gonna be SWEETNESS...4x performance over x800 pro...damn...

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

dood, r520 has 32 pipes. this is double the current vid cards. and is on par with pro-level cards that are whooping $4000-5000. seeing that going to 16 pipes at least doubled the speed of teh x800 series and 6800 series, i'd imagine that if things are done right we can really see 2-4x improvement in the next series. also, watch out for ati's dual core vid this summer as a remedy for SLI. i'm curious to see how all this will turn out. i hope this will bring the prices down so i don't break my bank on an upgrade.

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

Wow..anon at 15:2 knows a tad more about this stuff than i do ;)Anyway as i see it progress is good and when it drops in price to 200 notes i will rip my 6800GT out throw it in the bin and stick 1 of these in...unless some thing better comes out in meantime..hehe!

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

r520 is gonna be a large performance increase, supposedly at least 3x over x800 pro, but it wont cost as much money as the pro lvl cards ur talking about ($4000-5000)"Can someone tell me if this card will have AGP or PCIe ?"PCIeAnd the r520 comes default with its multirendering if im not mistaken which is ATi's "SLI" Cant be SURE on that one though, someone can possibly prove me wrong on that. For a price range, im guessing no higher than $800-900 or nobody would buy it. If it costs $4000, u can have like 10 x800's for that much. It wouldnt be worth it in the long run.

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

Yeah you can say that everybody's next card will definitely be a R520, I think it has been in development for 2 years now. I respect ATI for moving over to the 90nm process, it shows that they really care about the gaming community. I wouldn't want some strained piece of shit running hot as the sun, like the G70 will be. Nvidia is going to stick with the 130 or 110 nm. I don't think Nvidia will have an answer for the R520 for at least a full year. Also the R600 is not to far away either. ATI will show Nvidia what PS 3.0 is all about. If the R520 specs are true it's power will be insane.

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

Something is wrong here, I never care if my card is ATI or NVIDIA and I never buy the card as soon as it comes out, bacause when I buy it it's cheaper and all driver ralated problems have been solved and if the card just simply sucks I would have heard about it...Right now is a rather stupid time to buy a card anyway, lots of new stuff comes out all the time and todays new is old tomorrow... Just wait for little slowdown in the development and buy the best card then.To the point: It's nice to get a card, with lot of memory, but I doubt it would be any faster then Radeon 9800, if the memory it self blows, I'd rather take 256 megs of 400mhz memory then 2gig's of 100mhz sd-ram ;)It's not how much you something, it's how the something you have is ;)Now back to waiting for a worthy card and laughing at you people fighting over useles things...

ATI X800 XL 512MB Announced

Ano 15:2 ... i use maya and it rocks :P ... mental ray at least ... oh and 512 mb cards ... yeah whatever, soon its 1 gig then 2 then 4 ... and were back at the megabyte numbers before 10 years ... 1995 i had 4 mb matrox millenium 2010 4 gb nvidiati super X100 Xtreme MegaSeries 20 bucks a piece :D
