CryEngine 2 On Consoles looks Nearly Like PC's High Quality

In a recent interview, Harald Seeley, Engine Business Manager for Crytek revealed that both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 of CryEngine 2 are coming along nicely and that they expect them to look visually on bar with the PC version's high quality settings.

"The surprising thing has been how well the consoles can perform visually, once this tailoring is in place. We expect the final outcome will result in games that look like they're running at high settings, or nearly high settings, on a PC", he said. "Actually, we found it as much or more challenging to address the memory limitations of the consoles when converting our current AI system, as we did while converting our rendering engine or physics system, which was not something you might have expected at the start."

Seeley then expressed his belief that developing such a high quality graphics engine for Playstation 3 has been too difficult that he doesn't expect other developers to do it. "there is no doubt that porting our engine to the PlayStation 3 is the more challenging of our two ongoing conversion projects, but that works to our advantage in the end. We feel certain we have the ability to get the most that is possible out of that platform, and therefore PS3 games which run on our engine in the future will definitely stand significantly apart from other games that don't."

This just goes to show you how very little they've worked on tweaking the CryEngine for the PC. They just wanted it out so we could go OOOOOH, and then tweak it and make it actually run. This is why I hate FarCry and Crysis... Their programmers dont put any time into making it run smooth, just want it looking cool. Then, when they can make more money by porting it, they actually work a little at making it run decent.

Stefan, nothing in the article says that the PS3 was hard to port to because of hardware limitations, it is because the cell processor is harder to code for, the developers for the CryEngine 2 are not experienced at it. You saw the footage for MGS don't be ignorent by saying it has sub-par graphics. You make your self and your "360 fanboy" club look bad

If you look closely you can see where they've reworked the faces and some of the other fine details. I'm not surprised they can get it to run well, but you have to consider what they do to achieve that. If every face is cut in half on skeletal detail, even if it still looks good, that'll reduce the amount of power required. Now multiply that by 40 soldiers on the map at once in the later stages. That's a big savings. The distance trees are pretty much non-existant, etc. If you toned down the PC version in the same way they're "tailoring" (I love that sneaky word.) it would probably run like butter on a geforce 6800.

@Anon at 8:58; Well considering the machine it runs poorly on is an XPS M1730 with the extreme processor and other high end options, and that its costs around AD$5000, the engine on PC is still sub par. Other DX10 games can't use the hardware enough, while CE2 still has choke points where none should be, and still can't run with everything maxed at a reasonably stable frame rate.
