Crytek CEO Is Against Free Game Demos

A lot of gamers are used to trying a game's demo before shelling out the cash to buy the full game. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli believes that this is a needless "luxury" that hurts the industry and is about to stop soon.

"A free demo is a luxury we have in the game industry that we don't have in other industries such as film," he said. "Because we've had this free luxury for so long, now there are plans to change this people are complaining about it. The reality is that we might not see any free game demos in the future."

Crytek studio's parent company, EA, has expressed its intention to sell long "premium" demos on Xbox LIVE and Playstation Network for $10 to $15. Yerli believes that this is a sound move that hasn't been well received by gamers who misunderstood it as a greedy move to milk out as much money as possible from low quality games.

"Every time we see a publisher doing something to improve the industry, making things more commercially viable and actually increasing the market, people instantly think this is only some money-hungry ploy," he said. "Yes it is quite unpopular, but this is a messaging issue... there is a genuine interest here to give gamers something more than a small demo released for free."

" Whether we do have a [Crysis 2] demo or not, do I think companies need to release so many demos? I think that we'll see more and more games not carrying a demo in the future, because it becomes prohibitively expensive," Crytek CEO concluded.

hahahaah

hhaha! there are movie trailers to see the jist of a movie before you go and pay to see it... no free demos just means more people pirating your game before they drop the dough, and once they got that pirated copy they might not feel inclined to purchase the game they already have. and all because there was no free demo...

LOL

These guys make such statements and then they complain about piracy. It just blows my mind.
Pirate games will be the demos of the XXI century.

This GUY IS JUST LIKE OBAMA

TAKE AWAY OUR DEMOS FOR FREE = YOUR GAME SUCKS AND YOU JUST WANT US TO RANDOMLY BUY THE GAME. THIS FUCKHEAD NEEDS TO GET A NEW CARRER. SO YOUR TELLING ME I NEED TO PAY FOR ALL MMO BETA TESTING ALSO. THIS CEO IS A DUMB MOFO, HE MIGHT AS WELL NOT MAKE ANYMORE GAMES AND EAT HIS OWN SHIT.

IM 27 AND I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE
FUCK OFF Cevat Yerli

WTF?

is he serious?? he is trying to convince us that what he is saying is true, movies have trailers, game have demos, and they say it's a luxury??? well you must have very important mental illness, cause, im not going to by an original game for ps3 just because of the box, i need to try it first, or when u go buy a shirt you just look at it, you don't try it and you buy it? c'mon he has to be jokin'

Lame

What a lame ass! and who the hell is he??? The guy makes two games and thinks he knows whats best for the game industry and Gamers! Demos sell games! A buddy of mine who never played any God of War game downloaded the demo for GOW3 from PSN and loved it! so guess what? he ran out and picked up not only that game but also GOWcollection  f*ck crytek! Crysis wasn't that great anyway.

what a fucking asshat

"to improve the industry, making things more commercially viable" you are a sick twisted little man Yerli.... more commcercially viable... the game industry is already a multi billion dollar industry and unlike movie, which he decided to compared to, and dispite piracty that crytek once bitched about. the gaming industry takes in more and more cash every year. with an estimated 11.7 billion dollars in revenue made in 2008... with cryteks parrent company EA, taking in 4.2 billion of that  12, in that same year.... so to say this is not a money hungry move is pure bullshit. plus like everyone else has said, movies had trailers. which like demo's, give you a taste of the movie... and games of course cost much, much more. now granted most games even a short one will entertain you longer than a movie. BUT what good is that if the game sucks... we're already entering an age when game demo's are starting to become more and more rare. now... if this occures we will be entering the age game demo's become pirated also tell me HOW THE FUCKING HELL IS A DEMO COSTING YOU MORE THAN A PENNY? seriously... the fuck, thats like saying a movie trailer is to expensive.. all you have to do is cut sceens, or in the case of the game a level. or sometimesp ut a timer on play... and its a demo so it can be buggy and shit. your making demo's expensive with your retardation of posting patches for them, and crap like that... simple demo's like they where 10 years ago. cost no more than a couple hours pay to make... to say otherwise is either the worst attempt at lieing every tried. or proof of ignorance

Bogus Argument

I like how he compares games to the movie industry. Movies have previews and trailers, not to mention that I'm pretty sure the next game released by Crytek will retail for 5 or 6 times the price of a movie ticket and at least double that of a DVD. Why not compare games to the music industry? Oh wait, you can go online or to a record store and preview a few of the tracks before you buy a CD. Game demos are not a luxury, they are the only legitimate protection that game consumers have against low quality games that aren't worth paying a dime for. It looks like from now on the only way to try before you buy a Crytek game will be to pirate it. I don't understand why a CEO would give pirates more incentive.

Yet another ploy

The only reason demos are expensive for your company is that if it genuinely sucks as a game then people pick up on that in a demo.  Demo's have been around for so long because they've been a huge long running success with gamers.  It's not only for getting a taste of the game, demos are available to see if the game can run at a playable framerate on your computer.  There is no good reason not to make a demo of a game, this is just another ploy to try to squeeze more money out of people hard hit by the economy.  Yea it sucks that your company isn't making more profit, but try making better quality games then screwing people over with microtransactions.

The money hungry fool

You fool, can you not see movies have trailers (Trailers are demos of the movie, small pieces of what you will experience when you buy the ticket to see the entire movie). Even boardgames have demonstrations plays at specific events. You want us to blindly buy your games? We want to tast them before spending our hard earned money. At my grocery store sometimes, with specific fruit items I even ask the seller if I can tast them (Mainly grapes and such small items). If at my grocery store I have a free demo why should I not have it at a game. Is it me or this change in megagames made the site worse?
