Gabe Newell: Valve’s Worst Fear Is Apple

Valve cofounder and CEO Gabe Newell believes that the greatest threat to the company’s upcoming Steam Box will come from Apple and not from current or next gen consoles.

"The threat right now is that Apple has gained a huge amount of market share, and has a relatively obvious pathway towards entering the living room with their platform," he told a class at the University of Texas' LBJ School of Public Affairs.

"I think that there's a scenario where we see sort of a dumbed down living room platform emerging — I think Apple rolls the console guys really easily. The question is can we make enough progress in the PC space to establish ourselves there, and also figure out better ways of addressing mobile before Apple takes over the living room?"

Newell then told the class that he is OK with the fact that several companies will release Steam Box alternatives. He explained that it is important to foster the openness of PC against the locked down nature of Apple’s platforms which – he believes – is at odds with Valve’s core philosophy of sharing and monetizing user generated content.

"The biggest challenge, I don't think is from the consoles," he asserted. "I think the biggest challenge is that Apple moves on the living room before the PC industry sort of gets its act together."

Steambox is a great idea. They are worried about apple because they do not have enough confidence in themselves. I am sick of this god **** industry. Give me a title and ill show you how to get things done. Good god.

A bunch of BS. Read between the lines. They(Valve) wants to enter the console buissness with Valve Box. A rip off of XBox. Microsoft should sue them for that. Anyway, Valve Box wants to nail the PC's coffin with Valve Box. They are doing it with STEAM already. Seeing how they have not come out with any good titles themselves since HL2, they should really shut down Valve and its Valve Box. In doing so will give hope for the PC gamer that the PC is not dead. Gabe can go suck an ***. **** Valve, they are yet to release HL3. So why push this Valve Box thing?! Because they are ********.

Apple is too knee deep in the

Apple is too knee deep in the iphone and ipad business than a home theater system, Lets put it this way no one is interested in measuring up to Steam Box. I like Steam but but not enough to buy a Steam Box, companies tend to look at the sustainability of an idea before launching. In short most companies don't see Steam Box as a sustainable resource, one because the idea has already been tested in the nineties with similar services and two Valve has openly admitted to moving away from the Windows 8 platform which doesn't present a way for any company to steal the spot light.

i dont know why people think

i dont know why people think apple is all that and a bag of chips ,and every one seems to have an extra 1000 lying around to buy the new iphone every 10 months. as far as im concerned they've ruined the market w/ their walled garden phone and their bubble will pop. then maybe companies would realize people dont want to hack their phone they just want to be able to use it

Pretty much, what OP doesnt

Pretty much, what OP doesnt realize is that most people want devices that 'just work'. If they give users less freedom, so be it. The average tech consumer is no longer a guy who knows well what he's buying, it's a guy who has no idea what binary code is and doesn't want to know. That's why the walled garden approach is going strong, it allows such people to use their devices without concern, also it existed well before smartphones too so jobs and apple aren't to blame, consoles were always walled gardens, computers before the ibm pc were walled gardens as well.

so your say not having a

so your say not having a fully functional phone is a device that works , its more like having a device that works against you (like needing a credit card to download free software), and yes before computers ibm's registers and punch card business machines did not have 3rd party software...(only hardware), consoles on the other hand have had lots of 3rd party software and hardware and wasnt unit last gen (xbox ps2 dreamcast) that the internet was even employed so how do setup a walled garden

"wasnt unit last gen (xbox

"wasnt unit last gen (xbox ps2 dreamcast) that the internet was even employed so how do setup a walled garden" Uhh... you don't know what a 'walled garden' is do you? They didn't have the internet which meant it was easier than it ever will be again to force customers to only buy approved software - why do you think you can't play Dreamcast games on a PS2?

Megagames pretty much made up the entire story, I was there live, and I can guarantee you that his worst fear is a nutritional diet, which apples happen to be part of. Captcha: lets eat

"He seems to think consoles won't be a threat, lmao okay.... I think he means his company won't be a threat to Consoles."
