maybe amd is better at performance but i think it can never be like pentium.'cause pentium has all the market all around the world.although amd is tryingto find some ways, pentium will always be one step forward.at least it willcome about....

As both a consultant and educator in the field of Computer Science, I unfortunately must concurr with SOME of the remarks, and I shall explain my rationale:1. Typically, the introduction of a new Intel product, when a CPU; causes a "cascade" price shift thoughout the entire price structure, so this is good for those who will now have to pay only $89.00 (U.S.) at the ComputerPro Shows for a PIII 333 (100Mhz Bus)2. The first iteration of the new CPU almost always is going to experience both bugs, and growing pains while waiting for the bus architecture to catch up with it's internal bus systems.3. A real situation for the typical end-user has NOT changed. There is not need for the best of the best in the typical end-user environment unless their existing equipment is already maxed out with CPU/RAM, etc...and still have performance-based shortcomings caused by software/driver-based bottlenecks due to poor design; where "brute force" processor power alone won't solve.4. Even those who still use a PII have options for better performance. Namely, looking up the maximum amount of RAM that can be installed within the motherboard-AND ACTUALLY UPGRADING THE MEMORY TO MAXIMUM CAPACITY! [Wow, what a concept...] This alone can boost performance up to 67% without using Regedit!5. A PII with 384MB ECC 100Mhz-Bus RAM will OUTPERFORM a P4 with 64 standard installed, but cost up to $1200.00 (U.S.) less to own!6. I will need to see a prototype, with maxed out RAM onboard, and a good graphics card before I pass final judgement. Although I would like to see the benchmark results as run on WinCheckIt Pro...This is my professional and academic opinion. I still beleive that Intel makes a good product; yet can from time to time deliver a "lemon", and normally overprice their first generation of new CPUs right out of the "typical" market window...leaving the US Government/DoD etc to make the first big purchaces.Stephen P. I dont care what Intel releases. Look @ the Benchmarks for The AMD processors compared with the prices. Why patronize a company like intel for taking your money for an inferior product. AMD has stuggled to be #1 both in value and performance. They have succeeded in both. Intel is nothing more than a Brand name now, not performance.

What the hell, P something and the AMD whatevers. The P3 1GHz not crashy becuase not all of the P3 1GHz out there in homes and offices are crashing and at the same the the AMD 1GHz are but when they aren't the P3's are so it doesn't make a difference. Ok the P4 is coming soon so whats the price. Since it is a P4 and the performance is twice as fast as the P3 should the price be twice the P3 or twice the P2 or in between? It doesn't really make a difference since technology is getting better so fast that we consumers cannot keep up with it unless you are very "RICH" like um twice as rich as Bill Gates to keep your computer up to date. Ok the P4 comes out and then what next the AMD going for like a AMD Althon 2 or something that goes 3 GHz then the P5 and the return of the AMD and they get like a Althon 3 what the heck! it just gets better and better so who cares if you got the best fastest smartest computer you just need one that can do the job! So who cares if it is only a 1Ghz when the 2Ghz is coming out it is still efficent and is fast! Last but not least what is the price eseryone askes!?! The answer:A WHOLE LOT !!!!

I'm all for faster Pentium machine but I do not like the high and silly prices Intel always charges for there new wonder chips.Amd chips may not be as fast but the price makes them more viable for the average end user with not a bloody fortune in his pocket.Mind you Amd will have something ready at about the same time to go head to head with Intel and it should also mean that the smaller P3's fall in a price to fit everybody's pocket. It would not suprise me if Intel had this new chip ready when they started shipping the P3's which they have been caught and fined for doing so in the past.We will just have to wait and see....???

hmm, i think my amd athlon is fast enough for the next time the thing which still is too expensive is RAM, they sell 800MHz pc's with only 64 or 128MB RAM ??? the next thing i really need for better performance is RAM !!!

Intel Announces Pentium 4

why does everyone who has a comment posted on here have a spelling disabilitly? Well enough of that, I read all the hardware specs and test results at amd.com and other places and the amd k7 out performed the pentium 3 by far. The amd k7 has double the cache in its processor. It is also much cheaper. I would choose amd over pentium anyday.

The P4 will be a 64 bit processor and will only support 64 bit coded operating systems, (not yet available) and therefore will not be of any use with anybody's current system. AMD's "Sledgehammer", in comparison supports 32 & 64 bit code and will run current operating systems and applications as well!

I reccomend that anyone who is considering buying a p4 should read this.It seems intel have finally got their act together and decided to release their pentium 4 processor. The pentium 4 however, is worth the wait, as it will deliver unprecidented performance in every application. The main reason for this is that the p4 utilises 64-BIT architectre, so theoretically, a p4-1000 would be the same as a p3 or k7 2000. Pretty impressive huh?mmmmm - doom 4.

Actually, praetor, the AMD K6-3 was originally designed to compete with the Pentium 3. It didn't work out because even though the max speed at the time was about 450MHz, AMD didn't design the K6-3 to go at much higher speeds, so they developed the K7. That is why K6-3 are rare and so very little people even know about them. I do, I have a K6-3 450 :)

Well I see people are saying that Intel makes better benchmark speeds in just about everything especially games. Well I have not personally compared the two, but I am a frequent reader of PC Gamer, and sometimes read other gaming magazines. Some of you are full of horseshit. In just about every test, in about every category, the Athlon was faster, same processor speeds. So up yours you asshole liars. And who says Intel 900's are as fast as 1000 MHz Athlons and cost less? That is sooo much bullshit! How can you know how much the Athlon 1000's cost, they aren't even available to buy yet! And as for speed, I know they are much faster. I think you are mistaken for the Athlon 700 with the freezer/cooler. Very different story. AMD WILL ALWAYS BE LESS AND EASIER FOR US NOT-SO-RICH PEOPLE TO BUY. UP YOURS, INTEL.

Intel Announces Pentium 4

I think that AMD is a much better company than intel. Mostly b/c they make the same processor, but at cheaper prices. Why would anyone buy the same thing for a higher price. Its like why buy a 20.00 plain black shirt from tommy hilfiger when u can buy a 2.00 plain black shirt from old navy or something. I wish people would use some common sense

Intel Announces Pentium 4

Hi, i was wondering if anyone out there could help me out in making my desicion. My dilemma is, which processor should i buy - AMD Athlon or P3. I am going to build a new computer but i just dont know which processor to buy - yes both kinds have there pluses but which do u think i should get? Should i even wait for a while untill something better comes on the market eg: p4 I have around £250-£300 to spend on the processor. Can u help me with my decision!? It will be nice to hear a reply. Bye!

Intel Announces Pentium 4

I have no preference between the 2processors except for the cost.My past experiences with p3 and K7 aregood but p3 tends to be more powerfulwhereas K7 is slightly less powerful but morecost effective. For example let's take a P3 700 andAthlon 700.P3 = 2$ for each mhz = $1400AMD = 1.50$ for each mhz = $1050Now.. The P3 runs on a 133mhz bus thusallowing it to handle bigger workloads. The Athlon runs on a 100 mhz bus.. NOT200 mhz FSB.. The internal clock runsat 200 not the bus.. Now The Athlonstill has tremendous power and cost wayless for what you are getting and isbetter in some ways if not all.Now to those people who badmouth theAthlon saying oh this crashes, and ohthe processor sucks.. Take a second andthink. What kinda mobo are you using?are you using some crap Microstar? Don'tbe cheap and buy good quality. I have aAthlon 700 on a Asus K7V. Never had onesingle problem. And someone said itcrashes a lot on UT and Q3.. Maybe yourmobo sucks, or maybe your graphicz card?I use an Annihilator Pro, Annihilator Pro2,and Asus v-6800 DDR deluxe.. Not one problemwith anygame, or any application and i runwindows98SE.You guys think that becuz you heardsomewhere that AMD has problems withcertain things that when you have onewith your AMD its the processors fault.Think.. and take a look at your mobo, graphicz card, and OS. Or one rare thingis your RAM gone bad.I might only be 15 years old but i knowhow to think rationally and effectively. For all those with problems with the K7,Email me. I run 3 Athlons with no problems.and a p3 500Mr.Clean

OOPS!sorry for the double post.. BTW.. for those who needsome tech help, add this ICQ number. It's my cousin's icqaccount.. mine got messed up so don't mind the girly name76401822... I'll be glad to help anyone

Intel Announces Pentium 4

Do you people know nothing?AMD ARE MORE ADVANCED THAN INTEL!THEY HAVE THEIR COPPER PROCESSOR TECHNOLOGY FAR MORE ADVANCED THAN ANY INTEL TECHNOLOGY! AMD will realease a BETTER processor than P4 as soon as intel realease theirs! and intel suck FULL-STOP!

Intel Announces Pentium 4

I beleive that AMD will surpass the P4 with a new processor, or at least equal it. I have seent the k7 1GHz and it is only slightly below the P3 1GHz because of its slower cache (333 MHz). If AMD can make a CPU with enough power and work on increasing the cache speed, it will certainly surpass Intel.

Intel Announces Pentium 4

people are so stupid saying amd is better or intel is better. they are both great processors one main thing intel is a name brand and cost more, while amd is not a name brand and costs less. so which one will u buy the one costs more or the one costs less and u can get more speed for less then less speed for more money.

Intel Announces Pentium 4

I must agree with GOD...AMD have and will always come up with something beta than Intel...Compare the Athlon with the P3...they are rivals right??? and who wins..ALWAYS??? THE ATHLON!!! sooo as long as AMD are around that'll be where i get my CPU!!!!!!!!!!

Intel Announces Pentium 4

I think that the P4 will do excellent just because a good amount of the public trusts Pentium over AMD just because AMD has been the underdog for so long. And besides...when AMD does strike back Pentium will just do what it always has done and that is make a better faster processor. So the war will continue for a long time...I don't think there is going to be an end to this war for a long time!

Intel Announces Pentium 4

I´ve the same oppinion like GOD. AMDwill be much more good with its DURONthan the P4. Intel is more expensive, and often not as fast as AMD processors. But anyway, I often use LINUX ( for ex-ample RedHat or Mandrake ), and thereyou have big problems with AMD proces-sors. Okay, this might not be the right site for talking bout LINUX, but IF youshould use or you´re going to, then buyan Intel processors - why do you thinkare there nearly no servers with AMDprocessors. The P4 will be much betterthan his old brother P3, more stability, more speed, more functions...but in theend everyone has to decide himself whichkind to buy; often it´s a question of money ;)

Intel Announces Pentium 4

Intel has always been the most compatible processor around but in terms of value for money AMD whip Intels ass!!! I my self have a K62 400mhz and that easily out runs any of intels equivalant (pentium celeron 400)! my AMD, 128mg ram and Bashee make the perfect gaming machine thanks to AMD's 3D NOW technology. SO TREE CHEERS TO AMD (the future in processors) and BOO to INTEL's P4!!!!!!!!
