Microsoft vowed early Friday to shore up its internal security after a hacker succeeded in breaking into software giant's network. While attempted attacks on Microsoft's corporate network and those of other high-profile companies are routine, Microsoft characterized this incident in unusually strong terms.

"This was a deplorable act of industrial espionage," Microsoft spokesperson Rick Miller said Thursday. "We're taking this very seriously and have both an immediate and long-term solution to protect our internal corporate network."

Miller said there was no evidence to suggest that any source code had been modified or corrupted in the attacks. But the company couldn't say one way or the other whether source code had been stolen.

Microsoft has enlisted the help of the FBI in investigating the attack, according to a source familiar with the matter.
