Nintendo 3DS Surpassed DS First Year Sales Record In 8 Months

Despite its slow start (which forced Nintendo to cut its price down by more than 30%), Nintendo's 3DS has now managed to surpass the original DS first year sales record in eight months only.

Before launch, Nintendo expected 3DS to surpass the DS's sales record with ease. Those expectations were proven wrong by weak first month sales and lukewarm customer reaction. Nintendo then tried to stimulate sales by cutting down the handheld's price by more than one third but the effect didn't appear until now.

"In sales through this past Saturday - 8 months - [the 3DS] has outsold the full 12 months of the original DS," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimes told Time Magazine.

"During that 12 months time, the original DS sold 2.37 million and we just surpassed that this past Saturday, so we've got real good momentum going into the holidays."
