Nintendo believes smartphone games could quadruple its profits

Although the smartphone gaming industry has been booming for around half a decade, Nintendo only announced in 2015 that it would be bringing some of its most cherished IPs to the platform. It's fully behind the idea now too, with expectations from company executives that smartphone games could 'quadruple' Nintendo's profits.

Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said as much himself as part of Nintendo's 2016 roadmap address, which will be published in the next couple of months. The target for Nintendo over the next couple of years, is to raise its profits to 100 billion yen ($847 million) annually - though that would certainly be a big turnaround from the many years of loss making it's suffered with the Wii U as its flagship machine.

Many people also believe that releasing a new console, currently codenamed the NX, will help turn around Nintendo's troubled console division too. Although some have suggested it could launch this year, the rumor based on the aforementioned roadmap is that Nintendo will announce details and perhaps even show off the console in 2016, but is unlikely to release it into the wild.

Nintendo has stated that it will be experimenting with different business models and avenues of sale this year, which has made some wonder whether the NX will be a mixture of portable and home games console.

What do you think of Nintendo's plan moving forward?
