PlayStation 3 Successor Is In Active Research And Development

Some experts have argued that the current generation of consoles might be the last one, but it seems that Sony doesn't agree.

Sony's chief financial officer Masaru Kato confirmed that a portion of the company's Research & Development budget is reserved to the PlayStation 3 successor as well as Sony's upcoming NGP handheld.

"We have a portable, NGP, to be launched later this year, so we have development expenses to be incurred for this product. And for the home equipment, the PS3, this still has a product life, but this is a platform business," he said.

"So for the future platform, when we will be introducing what product I cannot discuss that, but our development work is already underway and the costs are incurred there."

We already know that Nintendo is working on Wii's successor and that it will announce it during the E3, but this is the first official acknowledgment from Sony that they working on PS3's successor. A similar announcement is yet to be made by Microsoft regarding the Xbox 360's successor.

It is worth noting that Kato's announcement contradicts Sony's CEO Kaz Hirai who stated in March that they are "not even debating" any home consoles for the near future while PlayStation 3 is still selling so well and only half way through its intended 10 year lifecycle.

Have not been on Megagames for years. I see its still full of silly teenagers.

As for my point of view on the article, I may be interested in Playstation 4 or what ever they end up calling it. I have never been a console owner and have always stuck to PC equipment.

The reason for sticking to a PC all this time is because of the lack of a decent system. I am a PCB designer and understand how both systems fully work.

The problem is the PS3 is by far the more powerful system, but that does not make it the better system. The firmware and CPU architecture is pants! Due to this designers do have problems with getting the most out of the system. As a result Xbox 360 is a better option for games, support and overall fun.

So really an Xbox is the way to go for pure gaming. However, its let down by some of the worst PCB designs ever! As a result of this it constantly crashes and no amount of ECN's will fix the total horrific mess the system really is. Its basically not fit for purpose and despite that, its still done pretty well for its self. Microsoft got really lucky that all the problems they have with the system was all the problems they had!

Nintendo make good stuff, quality is great. Not saying its perfect, but what system ever will be! However, as most of us here know, a WII is not really for a serious gamer. Sure its got good games, but its not on the same scale as PS3 ans Xbox360, it targets a different audience.

Maybe the next generation of consoles will be much better. The first Xbox and PlayStation were decent systems at the time.

I am happy to stick to a PC for the moment :)

oh wait didnt sony say PS3 is so damn advanced that its gonna last 10+ years. Oh well so much for that crap ey. Truth be told from moment of release with overpriced hardware(launched with 800usd pricetag ffs) and unfriendly architecture with fewer games and forced sony technology on top like BLUE RAY that at the time was certainly not mandatory(360 anyone?) but sony chose to fuck its loyal fanboys for the technology to prevail. In other words from whichever point of view the USER (with some brains/not much) looks at it, he needs to bend over as he naively listens to sonys empty promises.

If id have to take a guess, 3D's gonna be sellingpoint and they probably hope everyone will rush to store and get a sony 3D TV.

All in all i hope user wont get screwed this time around, not with the crap like 360 overheating and burning like a matchstick nor with PS3 shortcomings. F both ms and sony fanboys

The future of consoles isnt anew box thats 20 times more powerfull its one thats maybe 2-5 times at most that is super easy to program for that way the companys can concentrate on making the games awesome

I tell you this I have always been a huge Sony PS fan until they let my ID go to hackers. Maybe your fine with it because it is your mom and dads card but when yo live in the real world andSony lets your info go and says we will give you some old games for for their mess ups I BS.

I was under the impression that you were using mom and dads card mainly because your argument seems so childish, sony isn't releasing there new console this year, like you made it seem, it was just mentioned the ps4 is in the works, it could take another 3 years, who knows, the store will be back up soon, and the network is already online, so quit being a big baby.
