Sony: PS Vita AAA Games Are No Longer Viable

While PS Vita has been marketed as a handheld that can run games with "console-like-quality," the truth is few such games have been released on the platform.

In a comment on the PlayStation Blog, Don Mesa, Director of Product Planning & Platform Software Innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment America, admitted that producing AAA titled for PS Vita isn't viable financially and that Sony is looking for more economic ways to bring "big games" to PS Vita.

The economics simply don’t work with the traditional process," he explained. "We have to do something different to get AAA games on Vita. We accomplished it to a certain degree by making PS4 games work on Vita via remote play. PS Now will be another way, streaming PS3 games on Vita."

Remote Play has an effective range of 50 feet (around 15 meters) away from PlayStation 4 and PS Now is limited to a select library of PlayStation 3 titles. Unfortunately, it seems that Sony has decided to treat PS Vita as a secondary platform with regard to AAA titles. On the other hand, it is worth noting that Sony is currently working closely with several indies to release their games on PS Vita.
