Square Enix President Foresees The End Of Console Gaming

Speaking to Develop, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada expressed his view that network-driven and social gaming may eventually make the notion of dedicated gaming hardware obsolete.

"Let's say in ten years time what we traditionally call 'console games' simply won't exist," he suggested. "In the past the platform was hardware, but that switched to the network. So a time will come when the hardware isn't even needed any more."

"The exact timing at which it will go away is hard to determine, but somewhere around 2005 the console manufacturers' strategy shifted," Wada added, referring to the increased focus on Microsoft's Xbox LIVE and Sony's Playstation Network. Wada also braised Games for Windows Live as an example of the kind of centralized network-driven system that may point the way to the future.

That said, Wada believes that purely internet-based social and browser games have the most potential to reach previously unknown audience sizes.

"Browser games mean all the data can be kept in the server," he said. "With that, any kind of terminal becomes a potential platform in which games can be played. That's exponential growth in the potential growth of gaming. The potential size of the market is enormous."

lol stop pirating yes because no one stream anything illigal ever -cough- movies -cough- tv shows -cough- asstard.. also telling someone to google something instead of linking them yourself, is lazy and also a great away to look like you really don't know what your talking about ALSO I decided to look them up. and heres a little excert from there FAQ "· How can I reduce Lag with StreamMyGameLag can be created by one of the following,1) Graphics card (GPU)The less strain on your graphics the more power it has to play and capture the game. To improve lag caused by graphics cards you can lower the game resolutiuon or get a faster graphics card.If you are streaming at 640x480it's best to reduce the monitor resolution and games resolution to 640x480" sounds like your still requiring hardware.. and with resolutions like that, better hardware than if I were to not stream that game...

Anon @ 21:0You seem to have great problems understanding what you read so lets go:"because no one stream anything illigal "if you don't have the console to play it (because they wont make one, its all streaming) then theres no point in piracy you cant run the game on your own. And since it'll be a paid streaming service you dotn get to post your own stuff like on youtube, so no piracy at all.

"sounds like your still requiring hardware"You failed to grasp the basic concept behind streaming games (do you even understand what server and client means? I think not but will assume that you do). Yes the SERVER needs hardware (the idea described in this article means you dont get to own a server, so you dont need hardware, you are just a client) and the low resolution is a limitation of the streammygame service which, if you had bothered reading, is lifted if you pay for a subscription.

Also i only mentioned the streammygame service to give those who think "streaming AAA games is impossible" an idea of how far from the truth they are. Dont expect a console killer service to work in the exact same way.Just like the square enix guy said, 10 years from now it'll be very possible for a large sale service such as this to happen. *hint* optic fiber replacing cables *hint*

Guys stream gaming in under way, only thing they need to do is feed it to the general public somehow. In theory it is great, you could try all games without having to cough up the full price(guesing if its worth it), cap the users playtime at 30min/1h, and you don't even haveto make an extra demo, and greatest benefit for us, no hardware upgrades ever.Thats the theory, but in the real world they are business men, and they want your cash, and they want more of it every year, and once hey got you on stream gaming they got you by the balls, and only the devil himself can imagine how hard they will squeeze.

How lame... that's like saying we will live in mars by 2020... Go back 30 years, they said "Every one will have a flying car by the year 2000". LOL!Don't talk about this kind of things unless you already did it at least once. How can you stream something with no hardware at the end of the line? that's just stupid. In the "best" of cases you still need a modem or something like that to make the connection. Not to mention you'll need a 10000GB connection to play something like Crysis using only stream media.

Anon at 22:10I meant that they have no idea of how to pull something like this off. Sure, stream games have been around for a few years now, but never in a really big scale, only casual kind of games and stuff like that.Stream something like Mass Effect c0mpletly... that will make quite a few jaws fall to the ground. Talk about it and don't show anything and people will start to think you're crazy.
