Square Enixe: Sony And MS Are Prepared For Death Of Consoles

Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has said that Sony and Microsoft are secretly preparing for the death of the console era.

"In ten years' time a lot of what we call 'console games' won't exist," he said in a recent interview.

"In the past the platform was hardware, but it has switched to the network... A time will come when the hardware isn't even needed anymore," he added before noting that Sony and Microsoft are already preparing for "a new era dominated by server-based offerings, game streaming and digital distribution".

"Somewhere around 2005 the console manufacturers' strategy shifted," he said.

Square Enixe: Sony And MS Are Prepared For Death Of Consoles

anon @ 12:26 video streams at 29.9fps, or something like that. not sixty (in EU I think its like 32, probably diffrent in asia as well) Also anon @ 16;26 my microwave has a cpu and memory, and so does my coffee maker... so does my digital watch from the 80s... so yes you do need extra hardware. that is why digital cable and satellite have a box, and why they still make tiny little $50 video cards for the pc. and we're not talking about streaming tv shows, but streaming games.. the closest we have to that now is flash games.. do flash games look like anything you wanna play?

"the closest we have to that now is flash games.."Wrong, flash games are the exact opposite of this idea. Flash games are downloaded and then ran on your pc locally (thats called client side). Streaming games would be far more akin to a streaming tv show than flash games, the server runs the game (called server side) and sends you a video stream, your tv would just send the gamepad input to the server, it wouldn't process anything at all, just render video which is something it already does.
