StarCraft II Launch Day Sales Numbers Revealed

Blizzard Entertainment today announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty achieved a day-one sales milestone of more than 1 million copies sold worldwide, making it the best-selling PC game of 2010 within its first 24 hours of availability. The game went on to sell a total of more than 1.5 million copies in its first 48 hours, setting the record for fastest-selling strategy game of all time.

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty was released simultaneously in North America, Europe, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on July 27. More than 8,000 stores throughout the world opened their doors at midnight to celebrate the release, and Blizzard Entertainment developers were present at several locations to commemorate the event with players and sign copies of the game.

"We launched StarCraft II in 11 different languages and on 5 different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net® in the weeks and months ahead."

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the sequel to Blizzard Entertainment's 1998 hit StarCraft, which has been hailed by players and critics worldwide as one of the top real-time strategy games of all time. Sporting a vibrant 3D-graphics engine, StarCraft II once again centers on the clash between the protoss, terrans, and zerg, with each side deploying legions of veteran, upgraded, and new unit types.

The solo campaign for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty continues the epic saga where it left off in StarCraft: Brood War. The story line chronicles the exploits of marshal-turned-rebel-leader Jim Raynor and features both familiar faces and new heroes. Players are able to tailor the experience, choosing their own mission path and selecting technology and research upgrades to suit their playing style throughout the 29-mission campaign. Several challenge-mode mini-games are also included, with focused goals designed to ease players into the basics of multiplayer strategies.

The Legacy Continues

Blizzard is the next porn industry, except they deal with retro cartoon graphics exploded in technicolor. Where the gamer is enthused from senseless violence of repetitive clicking as your buddies yell smack over voice chat. Yup Blizzard has set the bar for Zombies in this day and age, the single most business capital in billions. Under paid employees, sugar snacks and a mean stick. Next they plan to take over the world!

NOT a short game, there are

NOT a short game, there are tons of achievements that I don't know If I will ever get them all, Have the ability I would like to think, but hell if I will be able to find the time, It's more re-playable then the original, (I would say why but it might ruin it) There are also added tutorials (that new comers will find helpful) There are also challenges that can teach you what counters what and practice your skills at small skirmishes w/o losing units. Additionally you can spend more then a few minutes out of mission in your different parts of the ship or area doing upgrades and continuing story etc. Not to mention the little thing called B.NET! Multi-player! ENDLESS! and I never have a hard time getting a match with the matchmaker. So one can hardly call it short, I am above average at RTS and I went through the first time on Normal so it was pretty cake but It still took me more then a couple weekends off of work, there are also tons of cinematic that you can easily watch once you have them. Over all I still feel that I have barely scratched the surface of the rest of what I could do with the game. I have completed the story but still much to do. ~DmnSpawn ****SC2 Definitely worth the money I paid.****

This proves that if you make a quality game worth the money people will still buy a good pc game. Maybe if more games were like this sales for pc games would go up like the good old days.

The only thing this proves is that if you make a quality game you can sell subsequent sequels using the original games fame even if you throw a lot of bs at your customers and strip the sequel into 3 short games sold at full price each.

I think the content that the game comes with is well worth the price to pay to play the game, and im sure it will be the same with the expansions. complaining about prices and thinking the companies are on some money sucking mission and its some how affecting their goals in life? hmmmm wake up, thats what the entire human race is doing with out even knowing half the time. why complain? it wont change a thing ;) think more positively my human friend... things will make sense to you in the end :) - - p.s. a great man once said "Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else, where as you are the one really getting burnt. "

Have to agree with both of you! Even if we have to bend over and take some serious bs, It's still a really awsome game wich delivers to all players imo. I just wish the story was abit longer and it wasn't divided into 3 games. Anyway if the 2 upcoming games are just as good or hopefully better than wings of liberty, full price is going to be worth it!

This comment makes it very clear you have not tried the game. I got Starcraft 2 with very low hopes, as PC games have really sucked lately. I was pleasantly surprised. It is an amazing game. The campaign is the best in any RTS I've ever played. The multiplayer is great too. Matchmaking and ranks really help you achieve an enjoyable gaming experience. Sure, they're probably gonna sell the expansions at a substantial price, but they're going to be worth it. You have to remember, Blizzard is choking out the PC game market, but that doesn't mean what they put out is crap. Blizzard has billions of dollars to spend on making incredibly high quality games, like Starcraft 2. It is worth the money. Like the guy said, if all PC games were this high of quality, there would be no decline in PC game sales. I torrented this game at first, but after playing 2-3 levels I uninstalled it, drove over to Gamestop, bought a copy, and went home and enjoyed it. I only torrent games to sift through the garbage (EA games mostly) and to find gems, like this game.

Starcraft 2 = Long long game with good replayability

Exactly. And now in SC2 part 1 of the game has 26 missions with extreme replayability. And i must say. They could release only the Single player for that price! The Multiplayer is like a whole new game which if they would could have sold as ann add-on for the same price! Definitely game of the year! Another fantastic Blizzard Classic game :) Only thing they could spared us for is that they could remove the Online validation for Single player as the game got cracked minutes after it got out.. Lan is NOT needed at the time we live in. Everyone got a reasonable internet connection nowadays, and Blizzard have promised Lan like speed when they get the servers optimised and tournaments starts coming.
