THQ CEO: 3D Is Overhyped

A lot of developers are hailing stereoscopic 3D as the next step in the evolution of gaming, but THQ CEO Brian Farrell isn't one of them.

"3D has to deliver the right experiences to consumers," Farrell stressed. "It has never been about the technology, it has always been about what we can do with it. And I won't be convinced until I see a compelling game on the TV screen."

"For example, will I see my son downstairs with his friends, playing a multiplayer game, laughing and joking, with those big glasses on? Are we going to have four sets of glasses lying around that don't get lost or broken? There are just a lot of issues at the moment."

"I wonder - for families watching the entertainment or gamers - does 3D deliver today? I don't think it does. Not yet."

"Things can get overhyped in the industry. The only reason 3DS worked is because it enhanced the experience. If it is a gimmick it won't work."

people need to understand

people need to understand there hasnt been any huge leaps in the movie or gaming industry for the past few years so they are pulling out old tech thats already failed more then once and claiming its the best thing ever and pushing people to get it, sad part is its working a good percentage of the worlds population wears prescription glasses which really doesnt work well with 3d, aside from being extremely uncomfortable its hard to focus on the screen, can cause severe migraines and serious eye damage honestly i dont like 3d movies much anyway, while the effects are cool most movies take it to far and they focus on having shit flying at you which really takes away from the story(cough resident evil cough)

Agreed.

How many 3D movies have been blockbuster hits??
Shouldn't ALL movies be in 3D now if it were that amazing?
Quit trying to justify your stupid 5,000 purchase of a 3D TV, and face the facts:
3D needs to be-
1)Not restricted by viewing angle
2)Not require ridiculous glasses
and 3) Be affordable

the above comment is

the above comment is pathetic. consume, consume, consume. even when the market gives the consumer a shit product there are still going to be a select few people that actually buy it just because they are told to. its pathetic technology which hasn't changed since the its original conception in the 1900's but has simply found its way into other forms of digital media. sorry guys, but you're being sold technology that is

a) old
b) no good
c) does damage to your eyes
d) you are recommended not to watch 3d TV when either pregnant or drunk and I am both lol
e) statistics show that people love watching TV when being either drunk or pregnant so yet another downfall

My Answers to Brian Farrell:
(Q) "I wonder - for families watching the entertainment or gamers - does 3D deliver today? I don't think it does. Not yet."

(A) It doesnt deliver enough, thanks to idiotic and primitive thinking of people like him, instead of thinking about new tech, this fool decided not do anything about it, as he rather stay old school.

(Q) "For example, will I see my son downstairs with his friends, playing a multiplayer game, laughing and joking, with those big glasses on?

(A) First of all, it deppends how old his son is, 2nd playing a multiplayer game (Modern Warfare 2) in 3D on a 55" Samsung 3D TV with friends, its a much greater experience than 2D, and a much greater enjoyment (Laughing and Joking) plus the glasses arent that big either, since Samsung does the 3D Glasses Sizes for Adults and Kids.

(Q) Are we going to have four sets of glasses lying around that don't get lost or broken? There are just a lot of issues at the moment."

(A) Well, it deppends how many you actually need for your household, in my case, I purchased 2 Adult Size, 1 Kid Size, and got 1 Adult Size for FREE from Samsung.
Since the 3D Glasses are a bit pricey, you are bound to take good care of them by also having a specific safe place to keep them when not in use, providing you are an organised person.

BTW Megagames.com Admin, please dont delete this comment as this is the 2nd time i had to post, dont really know why you dont other users to see my post, but i ask of you to please allow freedom of speech that we all deserve. Thanks

"please allow freedom of

"please allow freedom of speech that we all deserve."

I'm amazed at how many people mention freedom of speech online.

Sorry guys that's an illusion, being able to post your opinion online is a PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT. Private corporations and/or individuals pay for YOU to be able to post and, as such, have full control over it. If you want to make the rules (such as freedom of speech), get your own server, you'll abolish it soon enough after all the flaming gets to you.

3d

Thank god sumone sees the light. THis rush to adopt 3d and exclaim it as the next technology is just ridiculous. The glasses alone are cumbersome, and just not very comfortable, and you don't see people with vision problems and can't see 3d through glasses talked about at all. I don't see a person with vision difficulties, wearing thier prescription eyewear, plus 3d glasses trying to play a game? Egads. 3d gaming/tv isnt for the masses, it will always be niche.

Life is Short, you never know if tomorrow will come, enjoy life while you can :-)

"If the Glasses are a bit

"If the Glasses are a bit pricey, you are bound to take good care of them"
because kids understand that yes...

oh and eye strain that can blind you if you play to much oh so fun.

oh and paying out the ass for that 3d tv (most people I know just bought a $1000+ tv in the last few years and aren't willing to buy a new one just for 3d plus all that extra equipment.

and yes the glassest arn't to bad but compared to say... no glasses? they suck.

and final point 3d's major limitation is the hardware requirement. from a game companies perspective do you spend money making the game look nicer (on consoles at least if they do this everyone can take advantage of it) or, do they make the game look worse but have 3d, a gimmic only 10% of players can use?

and also since you mentioned a spesific tv size it frankly just sounds like your both bragging up your tv and shamlessly plugging it to others, real smooth.

3d in its current state is useless... once the 3d tv's that don't need glasses are more common and ceaper and given a few years for most people to own them then, and only then will 3d be not a gimmic and your still dealing with the hardware issue...
