There is no arguing that Steam is currently the biggest digital games distribution portal, but is this good for the industry given the fact that Valve uses it to publish its own triple A titles?

The aforementioned question was raised by Gearbox's Randy Pitchford who believes that this is unfair and that the gaming industry needs to erect rival services to Steam in order to foster healthy competition.

Valve's Jason Holtman responded to Pitchford's question and explained that Steam's strength, achieved in part due to Valve's games, is beneficial to the whole industry.

"In terms of whether we get too big or maybe our content shouldn't be on the platform, it's just doesn't make much sense. Because the content helps the platform grow," he said.

"There's nothing better in the world for anyone making an Xbox 360 game than the fact that Halo exists. It's awesome, there's nobody saying 'boy I wish Bungie hadn't made Halo' because it sold an awful lot of Xboxes that you can sell your games on."

"Having the content and the distribution that go hand-in-hand make it a stronger platform, make it a platform to reach more consumers with your own game. If you look at any given time on our top-sellers and our marketing, it's clear that [Valve games] are not the only push out there."

"The thing about PC in general is that unlike a closed platform you can make your own. We have a force of openness on the PC that's always pushing on us. If we started doing things that were bad decisions for customers or developers, they can just move and go somewhere else," Holtman, who heads up the Steam business for Valve concluded.

I don't like Steam, but the man has a point. But at the same time, what happened to the big games of the PC platform that's supposed to push gaming technology forward? Almost every game I see out there are just ports from the X360. My PC is 2 years old now, it wasn't high end when I got it, yet I play the latest games with highest settings at 1440x900.

Except for that Steam doesn't offer refunds, can pretty much say "F You" to its subscriber base if it needs too, makes more money than typical brick and mortar establishments because of less overhead, hides itself in legalities in its user agreements AND forces the user to use its services for online activation and play. Can anyone say middleman? Lets not mention when you purchase on Steam, no backup DVD is included nor booklet.

always have and always will prefer having a box and a manuali do own 2 steam games and the only reason for that is that they wernt sold anywhere else and i have to say steam is just a steamy pile of @$#%, constantly gets errors, connection problems, fails to properly patch a game which means having to download it all over again, and with the unfinished games they are released today you end up having to download the game all over again once or twice a monthdo that with 10 or more games and let me know how much time buying online saved you and how much time you actually get to playi dunno about you but i'd rather go to a store then wait for 8GB or more to download everytime i wanna play

DD does have some uses now. I don't like steam but all digital distribution doesn't suck when you happen to live in the middle of nowere, IE no access to games, its nice. since to buy most games I'd have to dive 4 hours to the store then 4 hours back, downloading is one hell of a lot faster than that. yes I like a physical copy but I'm sure steam lets you download as many times as you want... and personaly, I've never had any 'issues' as far as connection or patching.. plus NO store will give you a refund if the game sucks >> you MIGHT get lucky and get a second copy if he disk doesn't work but even thats hit and miss these days

You guys surely don't what youre talking about... Refund? Box and booklet? Please... Every weekend there are awesome discounts, like, 75% off!! I buy the game one time, and I can download it 50 different times, and I don't need to worry for the box and booklet, i can save it to a dvd if that's a problem!! Booklet? Do you read your games booklet before you play?! Honestly, you guys must be the ones who give back the game because there is an eppilepsia warning on the booklet!! Background application? You must be using some really s***ty pc's, or do you also turn off the anti-virus before playing online?! In four words: Cheap, fast, problem-free (yes, problem-free!!), and easy!!

the background app thing isn't so much it being a cheap pc. but with steam that means and extra minuet or so load time (unless you start it up before hand, which still means extra load time just earlier on) as for the manual. I used to one like getting the manuals but games these days never have anything of use in them anyway. (plus you get the manual as a pdf if you really wanna read it) the only thing that sucks is you can't trade the games

Just wanted to say i'm a happy steam user since launch since there arent too many of them posting. And really extra load time? It takes about 10 seconds to launch steam at startup, and as a backround app if you cant spare the 8 count them 8 megs of memory steam uses at idle then you should probably stick to flash games or some s**te. The steam store is awesome, anything you download can be backed up to dvd in case of file corruption which has happened to me once in the last 8ish years across my 3 pcs. Download speeds are great, typically for me 800-1600kb/sec with s**tty time warner RR turbo, and you can preload to avoid bog down on release days. There's also a great selection of smaller developer games that generally wouldnt make it to mass market, and as another poster stated there are sales pretty much every weekend that are anywhere from 10% off new releases to the sometimes 50-75% off year old titles that still cost 80% of their original price in brick and mortars. Then you have great features like built friends and the ability to web browse without minimizing your game.

"typically for me 800-1600kb/sec" not everyone is capable of even reaching those speeds... I for one can only dl at 600kb, which isn't bad for games, but, I know people who can't get even close to that fast... also = most people don't even really care about the indy games they offer, so that's hardly a selling point. and it may only be 10 seconds to load steam, but then its another 10 for steam to load the game, plus the games normal load time.. I get pissed off enough when I gotta wait 15 seconds just to get to the damned intro movies

jojo.. I think that's what me meant, 16KB, not kb the average person doesn't realize there's a different between the two...also what you consider basic cable, most people consider insane. basic cable is different all around. for me, its only 5mb(in rural Canada).for my friend in Kentucky it was 2mb. most people are know are less than 10mb on 'basic cable'

  " What the heck?" I

" What the heck?" I complaining about steam load times ? Now your just being bias. I guess its much faster to go reach for your game , pull the cd out of the box, wait for cd rom to play .. then find out you had to re- install game because of corrupt file...Happened to me with pc halo.
