Vivendi to Turn LOTR to MMOG

Vivendi Universal Publishing, announced several new games as part of its Games division's long-term agreement with Tolkien Enterprises to develop interactive entertainment based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The new titles include The Lord of the Rings: Middle-earth Online, an Online Massively Multi-player (OLMMP) role playing game, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Ring, a real time strategy (RTS) game, and additional PC and console titles based on Tolkien's The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

The new titles join VU Games' previously announced Tolkien line-up, which includes The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring titles due this fall from Black Label Games, and The Hobbit from Sierra Entertainment due for release in 2003.

The Lord of the Rings: Middle-earth Online will focus on both the heroic adventures and well-known community of Tolkien's Middle-earth. Additionally, the OLMMP will enable gamers and Tolkien fans to experience the fantasy of the vast The Lord of the Rings world in a growing and dynamic environment.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Ring will allow the player to take on the role of good or evil forces. Focusing on the events leading to the formation of the Fellowship and the Ring Quest, the game will expand on the world of Middle-earth.

All new titles based on The Lord of the Rings will be developed by VU Games' Black Label Games studio.

The works of J.R.R. Tolkien are beloved by generations of fans around the world and the development of these additional titles across new platforms underscores our commitment to the franchise, said Luc Vanhal, VU Games' President & COO, North America. We have engaged some of our finest creative and technical teams to deliver a rich and diverse range of products to gamers and true fans of the Tolkien universe.

Additional information regarding the new Tolkien titles will be released in future months.

Vivendi to Turn LOTR to MMOG

I hate to say this but it looks like this will be yet another attempt to immitate several other mmog games. Same graphics style, same laggy gameplay, and sadly the same attempt by corperations like sony to tie you to a product that will only drain you of money for the next few years until they make what they say is a better version which costs even more $$. Besides is it me or is there one too many mmog games being developed these days. I think the game companies have realized the potential profits of keeping gamers on a virtual pasture before milking them every month for every dime they got. Moo Mooo If i were you i would look at this title the same way you look at an isp, with a grain of salt as to how fast they rielly are and most of all how desperate they are to rip your bank account to shreds. Of course thats my opinion and i could be wrong. As for how i feel about this product i give this simple answer fits perfectly how i feel about mmog dominance. LOTR MMOG, kiss pickly white brown specked ass!

As much as I love The Lord of the Rings, this is just another mmorpg... And the market is WAY flooded with them. The only reason the original MMORPGs made any money is because there weren't that many of them! Now the market is going to be spread so thin, there will barely be anyone on any of them! At least with all this competition going on, maybe the prices will come down to like 5 bucks a month! Down to where it should be if not lower!

Does it actually contravene some new act of law that you have passed in your holy grail of a bedroom?Yes there are a fair few MMO's around right now but there are loads of cars on the road yet i see we have more than one model running around.I cant wait to at least se what they try to do. :)

Sadly you people dont realize the suckers you are by supporting this idea. First of all this is being made as a pay service just like many other mmog games. All they want to do is get you in and keep you in while milking your bank accounts for everything they got. Plus more and more hopeless idiots are getting addicted to this which results in their bank accounts being drained while whats left of their social life goes down the toilet. Second this convinces companies to make even more mmog games just so they can sucker more and more people in. It also convinces them that games using the old fashioned multiplay are not necessary so sadly many games like doom3 and unreal2 there will be almost no multiplay at all. I dont know about the rest of you but if i were you i would treat this the same way that aliens online was treated before avp came out. Bury it in bankruptcy and forget it ever existed. By the way anyone who does not agree can kiss my brown pickly stench infested butt!!!!
