Watchdogs, the open world hack fest set to debut on all current and next gen consoles and PCs later this year, is set to become a movie too, thanks to a deal struck between Ubisoft Motion Pictures and Sony Online Entertainment.
"Since both Sony and Ubisoft have movie and videogame branches, this deal creates exceptional opportunities for us to merge the realms of the story-based cinematic experience with the interaction of the video game," said Jean Julien Baronnet, current CEO at Ubisoft motion pictures.
New Regency will be the movie studio putting it all together however, which is slightly worrying as its back catalogue of films is hardly of stellar (or gritty hacker action/drama) calibre. Some recent efforts include Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip Wrecked, The Internship and Jumper. There's some good ones in its back catalogue, but it's produced some turkeys in recent years.
Still, this apparently hasn't blunted Ubisoft's enthusiasm, with Baronnet speaking highly of the company: "Sony Pictures and New Regency have deep production expertise and are letting us maintain a strong creative voice in the film’s development. Together, we’re confident we can deliver a movie that builds upon the excitement that the game is already generating."
It will be interesting to see how realistic this hacking movie is. Ones in the past like Swordfish or Hackers have involved a lot of far too in-shape people tapping away at a keyboard and making lots of very visually impressive stuff happen. Instead of social engineering over the phone or tapping away at a near blank screen for hours on end before hitting "run."
