Wii U sales top seven million

Wii U sales top seven million

The Wii U isn't quite out of the fight this generation, as while Nintendo might have struggled to sell many systems, despite having a year lead-in on the competition, it recently announced that it's managed to sell over seven million Wii Us in total.

While this is far from the 10 million or so PS4s that are supposed to have been sold as of August, it could put the Wii U ahead of the Xbox One, which was said during the same period to have sold a much less impressive five million units.

But we already knew Sony was stomping Microsoft this generation, the big news is that Nintendo looks to be in second place with the Wii U, a console many had written off as redundant when compared to the others. However in 2014 we've seen the release of Mario Kart 8, which of course became extremely popular. Hyrule Warriors has also done well and Bayonetta 2 has been surprisingly well received overseas.

The biggest software sales on the platform however remain the classics, like Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo Land, Super Mario 3D World and Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD.

This has all led to Nintendo posting a profit in the past quarter, which with Smash Bros just around the corner could lead to it posting its first annual profit in four years. Quite an achievement.
