Windows Media Player 10 Beta

Microsoft is asking users to help test its new Windows Media Player 10. The company has released a beta version of the popular player for download, even though it still is in its early stages...

The most significant change to the player is expected to be the introduction of online music sales. Various companies will be able to offer their multimedia content for sale through WMP 10. Codenamed Digital Media Mall the service will offer a variety of online music stores and video services in a similar way to Apple's iTunes online jukebox.

The obstacles that will need to be overcome in order to produce a secure and reliable service are so great that Microsoft have had to make this move in order to get as wide a test group as possible.

Features of WMP 10 include :

- Sleek New Design. A streamlined and sleek new design delivers a fresh new look and improved ease of use, including faster access to top Player tasks. The most important Player features are now in a more prominent position in the library, enabling users to accomplish everyday digital media tasks all in one convenient place and to take advantage of the powerful capabilities of the Player while browsing the library.
- Choice of Online Stores. Introducing the first Digital Media Mall enabling you to discover, download, rent or stream music and video within the Player from a choice of online stores. These stores enjoy deeper integration and customization within the Player to enhance their functionality and ease of use.
- Enhanced Device Support. A wide selection of devices are supported with this release, including a host of current portable music players and new Portable Media Center devices that will be available later this year. A major component of this rich device support includes a new feature called Auto Sync which enables the seamless, automatic synchronization of music, video, and even recorded TV and photos to supported portable devices.
- Improved All-in-One Smart Jukebox. Windows Media Player 10 Technical Beta builds upon the award-winning Windows Media Player 9 Series, delivering fast and flexible playback, unmatched audio and video quality, and smart jukebox features designed to save you time and effort.

Ross Perot:Because if everyone stole music there would be noone left to subsidise fu<king <unts like yourself who refuse to pay their fair share.Don't get me wrong; I'm not on the side of record companies. I believe it is mainly their fault for manufacturing crap artist after crap artist and throwing their sh1t cookie-cutter tunes in our faces... I mean if they want to keep promoting "disposable artists" then the public is going to treat them as such.I also believe that they just have to face the fact that what they are producing just isn't worth as much money as they want for it. Successful artists (musicians and actors alike) shouldn't be worth millions of dollars.A CD here in Australia can be anywhere between $20-$30 which is just way too much for 90% of the tunes out there, make them $5-$10 and I would buy a stack more.Anyways, all that aside, you should still pay for the music that you like. If you like a band, BUY THEIR CD!! It's the only way that they will keep releasing them!By all means treat edonkey like the radio... download the latest crap song, listen to it a couple of times, then clear it from your harddrive and your memory... but if EVERYBODY starts downloading EVERYTHING... even cd's they would normally buy, then the record companies are going to cry poor and taking risks on new bands, which means we stop seeing new talent, and we continue to see a lot more manufactured clones that the record companies know will be sure fire hits.

Well there is one other thing I am also worried about. Microsoft is also a company that is trying to fight piracy in terms of digital content and this software just so happens to log in constantly to the microsoft website for updates. Soon or later the riaa is gonna ask microsoft to activate whatever snooping feature is on here in order to track users and see who has a large amount of illegal copywrited music that has been downloaded. From there they can easily get all the information to go after you or at least pressure you to sign over a large chunk of money while quitting downloading music off the net. I suggest you make certain that before you download this that you make sure it has no way to upload or download information to your computer.

Mike:Not buying music is best form of protest we as consumers have. Why should I buy a cd or download from iTunes when somewhere like 5% of the sale goes to the artist and the rest is sucked up by the record industry. I support my favourite bands by seeing them live in concert, and maybe buying some merchandise at their shows. That way I know I'm actually 'supporting' my bands and not some guys in nice suits sipping cognac. If I could, I would buy the music straight from the artist. It would cost extremely less and I have the satisfaction of knowing 100% of the money I pay goes to them.If everyone stopped buying music, the recording industry would crash, but the music would still exist and a new method of distribution (likely internet based) would come about which is more likely to benefit the artist and the consumer.

i agree with you mike, i know all about this music industry, and to be honest its f**ked up how much goes to the record label and not the actual music artist. and people who write a whole f**king SA on here saying why its cheap to not buy the music, well you can just shut up.. because to be honest, we are getting more involved with msuic by donwloading new artists we do not know about allready!.. so yeah, PEACE

Windows Media Player 10 Beta

i agree with everyone thats stays with winamp and bsplayer and believes in emule edonkey kazaa and bit torrent. hell i have bought music before. i have never refused anyone downloading them. those who only buy music not download it should kick into gear and get into the a new age.

Windows Media Player 10 Beta

i reckon with how much the artist make we should go on an "Audio pirating Spree" until the give the artist like 50% of the album.heck we dont even know hom much they get out of the concerts and merchindise

Windows Media Player 10 Beta

3% of the album cost (at cost price, not store price) goes to the artist. the rest goes to the RIAA to sue people for more money. and NONE of that money goes to the artist. the online stores are even less. so really, tell me, whats the point?
