Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

According to the latest information from Microsoft, a public release of Windows XP Service Pack 2 will be available this Monday on the Microsoft TechNet website. The announcements include a detailed release schedule for the much anticipated and delayed update. A customer ready email from MS reads:

I am pleased to inform you that Windows XP Service Pack 2 released to manufacturing on Friday August 6, 2004. Windows XP Service Pack 2 contains major security improvements designed to provide better protection against hackers, viruses, and worms. Windows XP Service Pack 2 also improves the manageability of the security features in Windows XP and provides more and better information to help users make decisions that may potentially affect their security and privacy.

On Monday, August 9, 2004, the full network installation package for Windows XP Server Pack 2 will be posted on the Windows XP Service Pack 2 site on Microsoft TechNet, (link available by following the 'download' tab above). This site is also the best resource for accessing the most up-to-date technical information regarding Windows XP Service Pack 2.

On-line distribution will be the primary distribution vehicle for Windows XP Service Pack 2 and below is a summary of the key milestones of the distribution plan:

8/6 Release to manufacturing
8/9 Release to Microsoft Download Center (network installation package)
8/9 Release to MSDN subscription site (CD ISO image)
8/10 Release to Automatic Updates (for machines running pre-release versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2 only)
8/16 Release to Automatic Updates (for machines NOT running pre-releases versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2)
8/16 Release to Software Update Services
Later in August Release to Windows Update for interactive user installations

Because of the significant security improvements outlined above, Microsoft views Windows XP Service Pack 2 as an essential security update and is therefore distributing it as a 'critical update' via Windows Update (WU) and the Automatic Updates (AU) delivery mechanism in Windows. Microsoft is strongly urging customers with Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1-based systems to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 as soon as possible.

DMat 23:20 8/8/2004Anonymousat 22:43 8/8/2004qoute:because microsoft resolves issues, not cause themwith every fix there is more bugs, proof of this is WINDOW 2000, SP4 caused more bugs than it fixedBut this isnt Windows 2000 you fool, its Windows XP so you prove nothing except the fact you are ignorant. Windows XP is actually a very stable and reliable operating system - at least for home use. And all the people that slag it off only do so because they think it looks cool to do it. The fact is that the web is overflowing with hacked copies so the argument that "linux is free therefore windows is gay" is complete crap coz you can get windows for free also.yes but XP was biult around 2000 but wif a new GUI. yes im ignorant but i still use MS coz i cant find any appz for linux

Goddamn you people are stupid.... try actually READING the article, look at the release scheduele at the bottom, and notice where they say you can get it by clicking the download tab. It won't be out in MS update till the 16th, just like the article said. You have to click on the one thats for IT professionals to get it now. Downloading straight from microsoft as I type. If you're too dumb to read the article, then you don't deserve to get SP2 early.

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

I heard that you cant install Windows SP2 unless you have the latest version of Gator. The only problem is that when you open IE, 65.5 popups open a second. And after 2 mins, your computer will crash leading to a reformat. But its totally worth it...

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

I Just Thought Ya Might Need An IT Professional To Help You On This One There Is No Difrence Between The 2 Releases The Network One And The Single Computer One Apart From Network One Can Be Stored On Disk Or On A Server For Later Use Where As Single User One Only Downloads Installs And Deletes The Installer

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

well, if microsoft wants to cut down on piracy then maybe they should make they OS ALOT CHEAPER! then people would go out and buy it.$400 for WinXP Pro in Canadian. By god, I can buy myself new clothes, take my girlfriend on a date, buy a DVD or 2 and buy the new Doom 3 game. Not to mention, when I get a new OS, I always format for a clean install as its always better and lets be honest, getting your computer up and running again is not very fun.

I wonder if anyone here could program an Operating system and make it completely bug free? If anyone can i suggest they do it and start selling. while training on Visuan Basic at college i know how much of an ass it can be. Once one problems fixed another one takes its place. It's near impossible to fix all bugs and all features especially with the massively increasing amount of integrated technology into OS' now. With built in antiviruses and firewalls and network management things its like having several programs in one. No program is perfect and will have a few bugs in no matter what, imagine how many bugs actually get mounted up as these several softwares get merged? ever thought of that? I seriously doubt we're gunna have bug free software, bug free hardware, bug free electrics and even bug free bloody kitchen tools so stop complaining and live with it, anything you get in place will be buggy and have problems with it. Ok rant over

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

Operating Systems are more expensive than some PC components for gods sake. If MS are so concerned about piracy then i agree with Anonymous at 6:40, theys hould be much cheaper. I got my XP for £5 UK pounds, i can upgrade it, no activation codes or limits on CD Keys and best of all I still had £295 left to go and spend shopping and in the pub, brilliant! Long live piracy! (and dont give me the whole "it funds terrorism" shit because i sure as hell know i aint some twat with a bomb strapped to me, any money i make goes towards new clothes and PC upgrades!!!)PIRACY FOREVER!!!

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

10:28, maybe if everyone bought it instead of pirating it, the price would come down... ever thought of that?If everyone did what you did, do you really think the price would go down? Hell if everyone did what you did windows would be LONG GONE.The least you could have done is sent microsoft $50 in the mail. I mean you are using something that took people almost there whole life to make. Yet you dont have the slightest bit of appreciation, completely dispicable.

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

RE: "maybe if everyone bought it instead of pirating it, the price would come down... ever thought of that?"WTF????Hmmm... .... More Like...If the price went down, More people would buy it....Anyways, they get mostly all of their money from the business that buy the OS in bulk anyways...Some people dont think.

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

Like the other guy said... The 2 different "versions" of the update are the same exact thing. One is downloadable so you can access it with many computers on a network (or just one computer) the other installs instslef automatically and deletes the original install file, so it would not work well for a network. But the update itself is the exact same thing. It's just a different way of installing. And if the dim ones in here could actually read the article they are commenting on they would see that there is a release date schedule and you won't be able to get it with your little happy Windows Update site until later in August. That's what "Later in August Release to Windows Update for interactive user installations" means. Is it really that hard to read English?

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

i cant wait for sp2. I always love updating things, even if it's not necessary or noticable.I just hope it won't effect p2p, ect. It shouldn't though. And the best OS depends on the user. If your the type that uses mirc and the internet will use linux. I like Windows because it's easiest to find drivers, updates, and it's compatable with everything.

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

If windows had direct competition prices would lower, as it doesn't pices remain very high. They get millions off business, far more than home users. I just hope someone finds a way to get crack the SP2 because i'm not paying a penny to MS.

Windows XP SP 2 Ready This Monday

Holy Shit! I just installed SP2 and now my pc boots up in under 10 sec.I used the network install version of SP2 by the way.Microsoft says that if you own a pirated copy of XP, that SP2 won't allow you to install. WRONG!!!!I installed it and it worked beautifully. f**k it, I ain't paying for Bill Gates' shit,he's rich enough already. He is among the wealthiest in the entire world. Piracy has no effect on Microsoft.Just look how wealth the company is. If we all bought Windows OSes, he'd be a trillionaire.
