Game Freak is making a full Pokémon RPG for the Nintendo Switch

If there is one game that Nintendo fans have been clamouring for for years, decades at this point, it's a full-console Pokémon RPG. While companion games like Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Colosseum hinted at the potential of such a title, Nintendo and Game Freak have only ever released full RPGs on handheld systems. They've helped prop up the various mobile consoles over the years, but they may help increase the Switch's popularity in the future, as one is finally coming to Nintendo's flagship system.

Announced during this week's E3 show by Pokémon Company’s president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara as part of the Nintendo Direct presentation, we weren't given any sort of release date for the game, but it's expected to be a 2018 release, since Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon for the 3DS are slated to show up in November this year. However, this is still monumental news for Pokémon fans, as many felt a mainstream Pokémon game would never be released on anything but Nintendo's latest portable system.

But it's perhaps the Switch's portable ability, or at least Nintendo's move to unite its major console platforms, that has driven this latest interest in moving the franchise over to a home console.

Details about what the game will be like remain very thin on the ground right now, but people unable to wait can enjoy Sun and Moon right now on the 3DS, or the Ultra versions later this year. The Switch is also getting Pokkén Tournament this fall, though that's hardly the same.

Personally I'm playing Pokémon Uranium still.
