A number of sources have confirmed a series of codenames for AMD's upcoming Radeon RX Vega range of graphics cards, along with a few additional details. They will make use of the RX branding that has been used for the previous 400 and 500 series cards, but numbers won't feature in these names. Indeed, AMD appears to be going back into its classic era of GPU designations, with XTX, XT and XL brands coming to the fore.
AMD's Vega range of cards has had enthusiasts and hardware fans swinging back and forth with hype and trepidation in equal measure. Early benchmarks suggested the cards could topple Nvidia's top-of-the-line cards, but then the Frontier Edition barely equalled a GTX 1080 in anything but a handful of synthetic benchmarks, fans grew worried.
While we'll need to wait for the cards to release in the coming weeks before we find out for sure how powerful they are, we do at least now know what their names and some of their specifications are.
The Radeon RX Vega XTX will be the heftiest of the new line up, offering 64 shader clusters, with a total of 4096 shader units. It will have 8GB of HBM2 and have a board power draw as high as 375w thanks to its water cooling and likely overclocked core.
That's followed up by the slightly calmer Vega XT, which has the same specifications, but runs on air cooling and will likely have lower clock speeds. Its power draw is much more typical, at the 285w mark.
The third card detailed in this leak from Vidoecardz, is the Vega XL, which drops it down to 56 shader clusters and an unknown amount of HBM2 memory. It will be air cooled though and will have the same TDP as the Vega XT.
