House of the Dead and House of the Dead 2 are being remastered

Classic light-gun rail shooters, House of the Dead, and its sequel, House of the Dead 2, are set to be remastered by Forever Entertainment, the developer responsible for remaking the first two games in Sega's Panzer Dragoon series. We don't have details about what platform the new versions of the games will be on, nor when they'll come out, but for fans of those original games, this could be a chance to get back and enjoy some classic shooter action.

Details are being kept very close to the chest of developers involved in the remakes, but we can likely expect an overhaul of the game's shooting mechanics, potentially for virtual reality, or at the very least modern controllers like mouse/keyboard and gamepads. We would also expect new graphics throughout, though fans will no doubt hope for the classic (and classically awful) voice acting to remain, at least in spirit, if not as an unlockable option.

Originally released in 1996 and 1998, House of the Dead and its sequel were popular in arcades, but really cemented their legacy with ports on the Xbox, Dreamcast, and eventually Wii, where Light guns could really shine.

Here's hoping for a VR revival of these classic shooters.
