A post on Rockstar's support site blamed PlayStation 3 firmware version 3.61 for overheating the console and forcing it to shut down while playing L.A. Noire.

The post, which has been removed, claimed that the issue it limited to older versions of the 60GB and 80GB models of the PlayStation 3 (known among fans as "PS3 - fat"). "We have confirmed locally that multiple games (Rockstar and non-Rockstar) overheat or freeze only when 3.61 is installed," the post notes.

A few hours later, Rockstar removed the post and issued a joint statement with Sony explaining that it still isn't clear whether firmware 3.61 is the real reason or not.

"We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire," the joint statement reads. "At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise."
