Elder Scrolls Online Will Have Invisible 1st Person Protagonist

Elder Scrolls Online

If you were hoping to play the upcoming MMO Elder Scrolls Online in first person mode, you may be a little dissapointed to learn that your character will be completely invisible, including all weaponry.

This was announced in a chat between DigitalSpy and game director Matt Firor who said: "We are still working on this system, but as it stands right now, we have first and third-person support, just like in any other Elder Scrolls game. The only difference is that you don't see your hands and weapons in first-person mode."

This may have been because ultimately the developer ZeniMax wants to encourage third person play, since apparently it will offer quite a big tactical advantage: "The main difference here is that in an online RPG, enemies can spawn in a 360 degree radius around you, especially in PvP,” he continued. “So third-person view mode, if you use it, will give you a far greater ability to see enemies behind you."

"In many situations, this will be the difference between living and not surviving a combat sequence," he said.

Of course this announcement has led to many crying out "dealbreaker," and saying that not having this feature will completely ruin immersion. Others have suggested the way Skyrim has the player's hands in front of their face most of the time was ridiculous, so it's impossible to please everyone.

I was pleased though, as a few people have cited Mount and Blade's first person as pretty immersive. Mount and Blade rules, full stop.

NB. The header pic is Jesus in 1st person.
