Activision has responded to concerns that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare requires 175GB of install space, a standout even among big AAA games, where 100GB is becoming more and more common for a single game. It turns out that even though the game is big when it's first installed, this figure is more related to the eventual install space required for the game plus all of its additional DLC and updates that are coming down the pipe.
"175GB is the storage space we recommend players keep available in order to download the post-launch content we’ll be bringing to Modern Warfare. At launch, the initial download will be smaller," Activision explained in a statement. But it doesn't tell anyone just how much smaller that initial download will be. We would assume, considerably, otherwise why reference this larger number instead?
This isn't likely to be some momentous controversy, but it does show that game requirements are ballooning upwards as we edge towards a new generation of games consoles in 2020, and suggests that even 1TB drives won't be enough to store multiple AAA games for long.
Modern Warfare has been the subject of some controversies already. Gamers have organized boycots of the new shooter because its cooperative Spec Ops survival mode will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive for a full year, effectively relegating the feature to a useless one on Xbox One and PC. By the time it is released on those other platforms, most gamers will have moved on to something else, and presumably the next CoD game won't be far away at that point.
