News: DirectX 11.1 Is Windows 8 Exclusive

After some hesitation, Microsoft has finally confirmed officially that DirectX 11.1 will remain a Windows 8 exclusive for the foreseeable future.

Microsoft employee Daniel Moth confirmed that “at this point there is no plan” to release the latest DirectX update on Windows versions other than Windows 8; not even Windows 7.

DirectX 11.1 is a minor update over DirectX 11. The most important feature it adds to DirectX is stereoscopic 3D rendering. However, the decision to make it a Windows 8 exclusive implies that upcoming DirectX updates are likely to follow suit.

A lot of game developers and publishers have expressed their resistance to Windows 8. With this move, it seems that Microsoft will stop at nothing to force people to move on to Windows 8.

Who cares if it is or isn't

Who cares if it is or isn't exclusive has anyone actually looked DX11.1 specs?....What does it offer over 11?! Anyone remember DX10.1 the industry practically skipped it and no one ever bought DX10.1 video cards.

My move to win 8 has made no effect in my life at all....my pc environment is just as good as it was in Win 7. That's a great point of view, layman to the core. Can you ignore more of windows 8's drawbacks by looking only at how it affects your immediate circumstances? No? Maybe it's because you already ignored them all. Please, go read and inform yourself because, you see, opinions and ******** share similar traits, they're very common (everyone's got one) and no one cares about yours. So if you must expose it, make sure you mix something interesting and true with it in order to ease things up for the rest of us.

Spoken like a true ignorant ******** right there you have, he said he uses windows 8 and it hasnt afected him, he doesnt need to read nor research anything his knowledge comes from first hand experince which is quite frankly the only way to know for sure if windows 8 is really as good or as bad as people have been saying, the rumors surounding this version of windows all contradict each other so my advice to you is to SHUT THE **** UP and actualy try it first instead of being a close minded moron, I havent tried windows 8 yet but I know many people that I trust that have and there is nothing you cant do in it that you could in windows 8, the addition of an apps strore does not remove core fucntions of windows for instance, by the way if your gonna reject peoples opinions dont be suprised when no one gives a **** about your own.

i for one have had windows 8 and its ****, looks ugly , feels good, messy stuff on loadup, instead of going to desktop, and loading screen is horrible to win 7's ,it may sell well but most ppl will avoid it like the plague, o as for apple , all they need to do is release a phone that isnt outdated like a dual core iphone 5, they need a quad or six core phone with nvidia tegra gfx chip 32gig or 64 gig of mem and a store as good as htc's .

I won't be one bit surprised if we see some crazy new virus threat or something that cripples windows machines everywhere but amazingly not Windows 8 machines. **** Microsoft is greedy and eventually the world will wake up and jump off the Moneysoft band wagon. I was thinking the same thing, there are only few games that no one might know about that run DX11. I heard that its for some 3D bs, as if I could not run 3D on my monitor and there are even less games that run in 3D for pc then there are running DX11.

Guys, I hate MS and what they're trying to pull here as much as the next guy but seriously, can you people think even 30 seconds ahead? Is it so difficult to look beyond the here and now? MS KNOWS how many games use directx, they're not worried about it because they know that number will only grow in the coming months/years. So drop the here and now BS, look forward, think hard about what may and may not come to pass, use facts and data to back your conclusions and decisions, in short, be a real thinking human being, not a brainless consumer.

OpenGL Anyone?

With all the development with Valve, Ubuntu, Nvidia, AMD and OpenGL we just need to hope the game developers add more support for OpenGL as valve have shown its ripe for current games and produces similar quality graphics as DirectX and on linux it can perform quicker than DirectX on the same hardware. Give us an option to escape Microsoft and there BS with DirectX as id be running XP 64 if they weren't arseholes with pushing DirectX onto versions of windows we dont really want.

OpenGL may outperform DirectX because theres a draw call limit in DirectX, regardless of your GPU. That keeps careless devs from frying your expensive Nvidia/Ati card in many cases. I'm all for a switch to linux as the main gaming OS but spreading misinformation isn't the way to do it.

they can make dx11.1 and 12 and so on ms 8 exclusive all they want, ill update on hardware which will still make games run more better on performance, even if i wont pass dx11 , but as it is said most games are console ports or dx10 and some dx11 , i had windows 8 i hated it ran good, compatabilty was worse on some things, mainly my usb pen and it hated my hub for internet some reason , so i put windows 7 on , the best os to date by ms for compatability , why cant microsoft accept that people who want windows 8 will buy it and others will not , why the exclusive ****, it's like a console war between sony,sega and nintendo all over again, maybe that's why the president of microsoft left ? cant blame him , i hope linux becomes a fully operating os in the way ms did with windows 7 big with support, and ill give ms the finger too.

Hubs are rather outdated pieces of network equipment, they only work on the physical layer and just broadcast data to all computers, you could replace your hub with a switch and increase performance so ******* much.

When your pc requests a web page (or any other data from the internet or a networked computer), the hub receives it and sends that page to all machines connected to it, the ones that didnt request that must throw it away. I can only imagine how horrible it must be to browse the internet on your network when someone is copying a large file between 2 pcs.

It gets really old having MS always thinking about more money using the same tactics. TBH if it wasn't for gaming and the sometimes complex things in linux I'd have switched for over 4 years now. Hopefully steam's move will convince some of the rest and linux gets a fresh breath of gaming air.

I doubt valve alone will be enough. If other large studios do the same though, then we might witness the rise of linux gaming. With that comes the ease of porting code between linux and mac os so those of us who dislike linux might have a choice (just like the choice you get when you get hired by google "Do you want a linux laptop or a mac? No windows allowed").

with microsoft pulling crap like this and the fact that a lot of good games are now being made thanks to kick starters and have native linux support and valve porting steam windows 7 could very well be the last windows operating system i and meany others use for gaming.

If stereoscopic 3D is to become a thing it NEEDS to be standardized, just like directx standardized graphics coding for game engines, microsoft intends to do the same for 3D. That would be a good thing if they weren't trying to use it as leverage to make people buy windows 8.

The choice to limit just shows greediness, then again I can live without direct x11.1, and stick with direct x 11. Life simply goes on without me purchasing win8 for my system. And if i want a touchscreen OS I will just buy a new mobile phone.

What a bunch of douches. They just released Win 7 after robbing people with Vista. They made Halo 2 a Vista exclusive just to make people have use Vista. Windows 8 has been protested as a loaf of kife, which it probably is. I hope more support for alternative OS's starts to grow. LOL maybe they think tablets are gonna last for a long time LMFSDRAO!
