Robert Kirkman, the original creator and writer for The Walking Dead comic series, has announced that he has negotiated to acquire the license for the last few episodes of The Walking Dead game from the now-defunct Telltale Games. Not only will his studio, Skybound finish the game so that The Walking Dead: Final Season is completed and the story brought to a satisfying (we hope) conclusion, but he'll be hiring on ex Telltale developers to give them the chance to finish what they started.
"We can’t lose Andrew Lincoln and Clementine in the same year," Kirkcman said at the New York Comic Con this weekend, as per Variety. He was of course, referencing the Walking Dead TV show, which has seen its own share of upheaval in recent months as almost all of the original cast left the struggling program.
It's not clear how many members of the Walking Dead's team will be brought on at Skybound, but with 400 miles between the two developers -- Telltale is located in San Rafael, CA, while Skybound is in Los Angeles, CA -- that will still result in a move for anyone who does make the leap over to the new developer. With no guarantee of work after this project either, it may be a tough decision for Walking Dead developers to make.
Of the 250 people let go from Telltale in recent weeks, one has now filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, demanding compensation for Telltale's violation of certain labor rights and laws.
