Cult of the Lamb pairs two very different genres into one loop. Above ground, players build and manage a growing settlement, collecting resources, performing rituals, and delivering sermons to keep a flock of woodland Followers loyal and faithful. Below ground, randomly generated dungeon crusades send the Lamb fighting through hordes of enemies and rival cult leaders, absorbing their power along the way.

Base management and combat feed directly into each other, since crusade rewards fund cult expansion, and a well-managed cult in turn supports harder runs. Followers can gain unusual quirks and traits, adding personality and unpredictability to colony management. Since its original release, several free expansions and paid DLC packs have added local co-op, new relics, weapons, follower customization options, and postgame challenges like Boss Rush and Permadeath modes.
