Make sure you purchase the item from the book store that gives an extra 4% gems as soon as you are able to.
Strongest Word:

A good strategy during any of the levels is to try and save your strongest word for last so you can use it to attack the gem pile at the end of the level. 
Farm Gems:

An easy way to get gems so you can improve your stats and purchase items for use in more difficult levels is to farm previously completed levels.
