Sony To Spend $200 Million On Organic LEDs

Sony announced today that they have allocated a budget of 22 billion yen ($203.5 million) for the development and production of medium to large organic LED panels.

Sony has already released the world's first OLED (organic light emitting diode) TV. Back in November 2007, Sony released the XEL-1 TV which featured an 11-inches OLED screen with a 3mm thickness and a price of $1700.

Not only are OLED screens much slimmer than their LCD counterparts, they also offer brighter colors and require less power to operate, thanks to no need for backlight.

With the ongoing demand increase, industry experts expect that OLED screens' prices won't stay that high for long.
